Miasaki identified as Marxist but he never actually engaged in theory because his argument for no longer identifying as Marxist was that "some rich people are nice and some poor people are assholes"
Miyazaki just saw the collapse of the USSR and it broke his heart and then afterwards he became an environmentalist with exactly the same beliefs as before but with the added belief that marxism had failed. The man didn't change at all, he's still the same person he always was, he just succumbed to doomerism.
Surprising
My source is a video called "A Marxist Analysis of Spirited Away" from 2:57 by revolutionaryth0t (can't link it, trackers)
I think the giveaway here that this mindset was generated in him by the USSR's failure is that it was what he said in 1994, 3 years after the USSR fell and shock therapy was at its worst. And that he specifically states he believes in the communist ideal just not in the projects of real socialism.
Dude just got broken by that shit, like so many other communists did. The socialist movement suffered 30 years of decline because of how many people were so broken that they just gave up.

you can link it if you just remove the tracking part of the url or copy it from a browser instead of the app

I really hope auto-removing tracking tokens gets added to lemmy
Okay I didn't know thanks!
