For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Early Summer (1951), a family drama from one of the great masters of Japanese cinema, Yasujiro Ozu, whose films Late Spring (1949), Tokyo Story (1953), and Good Morning (1959) we have previously watched. As is usual for him, the plot of this one centers around marriage, and specifically, a father’s efforts to marry off his 28-year-old daughter, who is already considered past her prime. Drama ensues. This is considered one of Ozu’s best, so let’s check it out.

Next up is The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), a gritty crime thriller about a gangster (Robert Mitchum) about to go to prison, who decides to reduce his sentence by snitching to the feds, while simultaneously helping his gangster buddies with their latest heist. Tension escalates as his conflicting loyalties come to a head. Director is Peter Yates, who is otherwise best-known for Bullitt (1968) and Krull (1983), neither of which we have watched. Great reviews for this, so we’ll give a whirl.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
