I plan on playing the remake of the 1st eventually too, I've just heard BioShock takes more after 2 specifically than 1, and that the games are fairly stand-alone so I won't be too lost just jumping in at the sequel.

strength gives you more inventory space, I can't remember if it mentions that in-game but it's naturally incredibly useful
