Most people are also gestated in tubes, and live birth is seen as a bit old-fashioned. The human genome has been completely tampered with to make self-modification a much simpler affair, as part of the Compromise of 2189 between genemodders and children's rights activists. Humanity has eschewed the libertarian idea of terraforming Mars and are instead demolishing Ceres to make dozens of space habitats with a genetically modified ecosystem that makes predation completely unnecessary.

Or is that still too modern-day? It's kind of hard to come up with this stuff when authors have already written about voluntary human hiveminds and non-sentient human-level intelligences. Oh who am I kidding, a girl kissing another girl is probably scifi to this freak.
