It was still homophobic with Putin because it was using queerness as a personal attack. It changed nothing, it was just homophobia.
The "weird" that liberals are using is not the same as the "weird" that conservatives use. The weird conservatives use explicitly targets marginalised people, whereas the weird that liberals are using explicitly targets those who obsess over and attack marginalised peoples.
It's shifting every group that conservatives have traditionally marginalised into "normal". And that is good.
While doing this, it is also moving conservatives into the position of the marginalised. That is also good.
It should not be criticised. The right will be deeply discomforted by this as they are ultra conformists. If you make them uncomfortable enough they will triangulate themselves into a new position to feel "normal" within society.
