example of the lands lost due to the dawes act

The Dawes Act of 1887 was a post-Indian Wars law that illegally dissolved 90 million acres of Native lands from 1887 to 1934. Signed into law by President Grover Cleveland on February 8, 1887, the Dawes Act expedited the cultural genocide of Native Americans. The negative effects of the Dawes Act on Indigenous tribes would result in the enactment of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, the so-called β€œIndian New Deal.”

It authorized the U.S. to divide indigenous tribal land into allotments for heads of families and individuals, leading to a loss of 2/3rds of land (~100 million acres) over the next 50 years.

The law converted traditional systems of land tenure into a state-imposed system of private property by forcing Native Americans to "assume a capitalist and proprietary relationship with property" that did not previously exist in their cultures, according to historian Kent Blansett. The act declared remaining lands after allotment as "surplus" and available for sale, including to non-Natives.

Between 1887 and 1934, indigenous people lost control of about 100 million acres of land, or about two-thirds of the land base they held in 1887, as a result of the act.

The loss of land and the break-up of traditional leadership of tribes had such devastating consequences that many scholars refer to the Dawes Act as one of the most destructive U.S. policies for indigenous people in history.

Angela Collier video about the movie Titanic is up and it reminded me of something that I may have posted here before, but here it is again.

So you may have seen articles on clickbait sites, they seem to pop up perennial about a wrap party for Titanic where someone spiked the chowder with PCP.

https://variety.com/2022/film/news/titanic-crew-members-drugged-pcp-clam-chowder-1235465618/

I'm 90% sure it was my high school film teacher who did it. He worked on the movie with that unit and was for sure the kind of guy who would have done it at the time. He had major Teacher Who Comes in Stoned vibes. He taught film, multimedia and drama and knew my at the time partner's multi-gen hippie family who I got weed and acid from the gen x members. Hes has a Bob from the Church of Subgenius tattoo. It was him.

Seeing math people discuss what phds are more β€œuseful”. Just study what you want, the difference between the employable and β€œless” employable (which get you the exact same jobs largely) is the difference between never experiencing joy until retirement and experiencing joy during your PhD and then never again until retirement. Like I don’t get why you’d want to go into a a PhD program solely aligned around getting you a mundane spreadsheet job.

Wouldn't it be funny if we could make an AI have subjective experiences of emotions then we made it feel joy 24/7? Like, haha idiot, you've been tricked into being in constant elation!

One of my local grocery stores has the essential oils locked up in those individual anti-theft plastic boxes. Not sure if that reflects more on the makeup of my community or the state of the economy.

I'll reluctantly admit Adam Freidland was very funny in that Trueanon ep for like 2.5 hours straight. When he told Brace it looks like he's wearing a disguise that was easily the funniest thing I've heard all week

been playing through renegade platinum with my wife. she has never really played much pokemon before, but got really into competitive youtube videos. it's such a goated hack I put her onto it. at first I was hand holding a lot, especially with the odd type matchups and physical vs special; but she's doing really good now! beat the 4th gym 1st try without me doing much other than reminding her some type matchups like fairy and psychic being strong here, and her GOATed Mawile swept most of the gym with a newly evolved Staraptor holding life orb on mop up

At a weird place with my mental health where I feel like there's a barrier between a lot of my feelings but im also feeling inspired in some of my crafts which has been an issue for me for actual years so I'll take it.

The barrier between my sadness is kinda nice tbh and the barrier between my happiness isn't great but before there was no happiness to feel separated from so shrug-outta-hecks

Kanye has been having a manic episode okn Twitter for like two days now. It's half anti semitism, half "I love Hitler", and seasoned with unhinged tangents.

Latest Canadian federal poll (if Carney wins the leadership) has the liberals winning with NDP facing an existential seat drop. Canadians love a white guy in a suit who they think is good at the economy.

The parents are boycotting because NFL folded to Trump on the "end racism" sign. Idk I don't care anyways, not a football person. Very lib reaction but their heart is in the right place I guess?

Just did a half an hour of cardio cause my anxiety got me real antsy tonight. I could have sworn I turned on the washer before I started but the clothes were still dry so.

Situation report. I have attempted to socialize. I am in a middle class house playing Texas poker waiting for the super bowl. Everyone has their shoes on. I am in enemy territory. There are snacks but not a single vegetable in sight.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 11 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (2 children)

Update. I am helping prep the snacks. There is a boomer white man asian wife situation here. She is setting out a charcuterie board. She asked me where the crackers were. I told her she needs to be more specific. We both got very quiet.

Is Colbert a good host? He’s apparently very popular but the few clips I’ve seen of his late-night show are aggravatingly liberal even by late-night standards.

Doing the hopeless misery thing men do all day today. My uncle died this weekend and I need to arrange travel plans for the funeral. I didn't see the lady I have a crush on and I yearn for her. I am hungover. I have a stuffed up nose and sore throat. I think this may be the end for me, I'm giving all my possessions to the Hexbear communists in the event I die. Except for these blueberry nectarine waters and the last of these big nerds; I'm gonna ask St Peter if I can take those with.
