On this day in 1976, Palestinians initiated a campaign of resistance, including a general strike, occupations, and violent confrontation with police, in opposition to Israeli settlement plans. The uprising is commemorated annually as Land Day.

Land Day was not a spontaneous uprising, but the result of months of planning. On May 21st, 1975, activists and Arab intellectuals held a meeting in Haifa to discuss a strategic response to Israel stepping up its campaign to appropriate Palestinian-owned land. This began a series of meetings over which the campaign was conceptualized, including a general congress that was the largest public gathering of Palestinians in Israel since 1948.

On February 14th, 1976, more than 5,000 residents rallied in the village of Sakhnin, calling for a general strike in response to Israeli repression. To prepare for the strike, local land defense committees and branches of the Communist Party distributed leaflets, organized demonstrations, and held meetings in several Arab towns and villages.

The first confrontations began on the eve of Land Day, March 29th as demonstrators in Arraba demanded the release of a local activist, closing the streets and setting fire to tires. Israeli soldiers fired on demonstrators with live ammunition, injuring many of them.

The following day, the general strike was initiated in Arab towns and villages, including the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and refugee camps in Lebanon. Israeli troops and border guards in military trucks and tanks raided Arab communities to arrest activist politicians and disperse demonstrators.

In total, six people were killed, approximately fifty were injured, and three hundred were arrested. When some of the injured applied for compensation, the Israeli Ministry of Defense categorized the Land Day confrontations as "combat activity".

The Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question describes Land Day's legacy this way: "Land Day was a turning point in the orientations and tools adopted for Palestinian struggle inside Israel. After Land Day the Palestinians in Israel gradually structured their presence as a national group inside Israel in a way that went beyond their local struggles."

During Land Day protests in 2018, seventeen Palestinians were killed, including five Hamas members, and more than 1,400 were injured in shootings by the Israeli Army during a march calling for the Palestinian right of return at the borders with Gaza.

MGS but Snake is voiced by Patrick Warburton but not in a Brock Sampson way where he puts some grit on his voice. David Putty/Kronk voice. Loud and clear as a bell

What if soy milk was kind of like orange juice where you could have it "with pulp" but the "pulp" was tiny chunks of tofu floating in the soy milk

Riding off a high of fixing a long standing bug at work today that made some sql queries take 2+ seconds instead of 0.5ms like it normally should. Silly custom odata code that used bitwise and/or instead of logical

Feeling my sense of child like wonder and hope for the future igniting in me again niko-wonderous been looking into a union nearish where I live that does apprenticeships for heavy machinery. My college days produced nothing of use for me but hoping this could be the thing I need for a future. It's a paid deal and union benefits would be nice just need to keep tabs on when I can apply and do my best on an entrance exam.

I don’t get the β€œdo nothing, win” meme. China does a ton of stuff. It’s just the stuff that actually matters like developing infrastructure, funding science, etc.

A canvasser wanted me to sign a "Freedom of religion in Japan" petition, and I just kinda blew her off but any guesses on what it might be? Lady already had pages of ζ£ which I assume is just her tally of signatures. If it's that one cult what got banned it would be so fucking funny.

Bananas work so well for muscle strain, I see why "clean"/"raw"/"organic" fad eaters lose their minds

Edit: vaccine?? No thanks, I have a blueberry.

I still don't fully get DM etiquette, like if someone hits me up to chat I will infodump but like I still have to leave room for them to respond? I do like a long paragraph but gotta stop myself from going too long. It's when I get one word responses that I wonder if I should just keep going or if I need to engage them better.

Also now clue how to go from special interest talk to flirting so I don't. Prob missed a lot of shots but like what if they find what I'm talking about actually interesting like I do when talking to other autistic people. I know DMs are more than flirting but like "sliding into DMs" exists for a reason.

Anyway there should be a book or podcast on this I can consume or at minimum a flow chart I can pull up.

Starting to understand how self-loathing makes you ill if it goes unaddressed

I've had a series of nice things said to me recently and I discovered this knee-jerk response where I assume it CANNOT BE TRUE that people mean half of the things they said

Someone compliments my writing? Well I haven't met them in person, they could just be working on a long term scam. Someone said I'm thoughtful? They must be intellectually lazy. Someone compliments my appearance? Gotta be some kind of hypersexual fiend who will say anything.

Like my god, I come up with downright mean assumptions about others just for some kind of weird avoidance of believing I have good qualities, probably some kind of paradoxically narcissistic impulse I don't fucking know. I wouldn't want to associate with someone who assumes these terrible things about me either.

It’s funny that Canadians are so addicted to neoliberalism that even our frothing chud politicians have convoluted plans. It’s always like we will end Le wokisme by creating a temporary tax deferral for capital gains taxes on money reinvested in eligible Canadian corporations.

As far as I can tell, no-one in this interaction is a Hexbear. Golden Cow has previously defended Hexbear, but I can't find any evidence they're an alt.

I see the single issue fed accounts are still at it: https://hexbear.net/u/Hotznplotzn@lemmy.sdf.org
