EUGENE VICTOR DEBS (1855-1926) was one of the greatest and most articulate advocates of workers’ power to have ever lived. During the early years of the labor movement in the United States, Debs was far ahead of his times, leading the formation of the American Railway Union (ARU) and the American Socialist Party.

Debs was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on November 5, 1855. He left home at 14 to work on the railroad and soon became interested in union activity. As president of the American Railway Union, he led a successful strike against the Great Northern Railroad in 1894. Two months later he was jailed for his role in a strike against the Chicago Pullman Palace Car Company. While in jail, Socialist and future Congressman Victor Berger talked with Debs and introduced him to the ideas of Marx and socialism. When he was released from prison, he announced that he was a Socialist.

He soon formed the Social Democratic Party, which eventually became the Socialist Party in 1901. He became their perennial presidential candidate. He ran on the Socialist ticket in 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920 when he received his highest popular vote—about 915,000 (3.4%)—from within a prison cell. He had been arrested once again, this time for “sedition”; because he opposed World War I. Many Socialists were imprisoned during this time because they felt that the war was being fought for the profits of the rich, but with the blood of the poor. Debs was fortunately released in 1921.

Debs died in Elmhurst, Illinois, on October 20, 1926, but he is remembered to this day by countless labor activists from all over the political spectrum. The Eugene V. Debs Foundation works to continue his legacy into the 21st century...

Had to visit relatives yesterday. The old folks again repeating the slur for Russians that we have over and over again at the coffee table. I think one reason they love doing this extra-much now is the way I have voiced my opinion againts it in the past. They put real emphasis to it now, it feels like bullying. It is like it's tied to their identity (and I suppose it is).

Also all the war mongering, nato loving, zenophobic talking points you coul dream of all in one visit.

This always puts a knot in my stomach for days after and lands me in a state of doom. These people raised me, they are shit people.

i think it's because of my age and that i mostly knew what went down with the previous three seasons beforehand, but i can't stop fuming and being shocked at blowback's afghanistan season

one of the things is that the US never claimed to be about women's rights in trying to destroy cuba, or korea. but Afghanistan, a country that was better off 60 fucking years ago under a dipshit autocrat, these texan dipshits who funded antifeminism in afghanistan since 1979, who sold the country to patriarchal gangsters twice----they say they were there for the women. it makes my skin fucking crawl

IOF are now claiming their tanks weren't blown up by Hamas fighters and that the video of the guy running up and putting a bomb on one before hitting it with an RPG was staged. The reality is that one of the tank's crew members was just trying to charge his new Samsung Galaxy S8.

Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.

In my work group chat I shared links to Doctors Without Borders, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Palestine Children's Relief Fund. And then instructions how to get our employer to match donations. If I get any blowback for that then I didn't want to work there in the first place.

Am I right in assuming we (as in people in general) used to work a lot less in the winter? Like it was dark for most of the day, no crops were growing, stuff like that.

I think DST tries to solve the problems we created by making work a uniform thing year-round. Like the problem isn't that it's dark at 5 PM, it's that you still have to work until 5 PM despite the fact that it's dark.

In line at the pharmacy to get paxlovid for my partner. They have it, I saw the box in the lady’s hand, but they apparently need to have the doctor confirm it because of the insurance. Like what the fuck is a prescription even lol?

I'm going to have to drop out of my Ph.D. program deeper-sadness I don't know why (I assume MS), but I can't really read high contrast text on a computer screen any more. I've also missed almost every day of class this semester from feeling like shit, physically and mentally. Trying to wrangle my disability and do classes has sucked the passion I had for this of me as well.

Dawn of The Final Week
- 40 Hours Remain -

Pure chaos at my soon-to-be-former workplace as my manager and his manager both beg me to invest all of my remaining hours into training coworkers on my responsibilities. Despite this, they make no attempt to quell the flow of routine work arriving at my desk. The eyes of my fellow team members are slightly less bright as management informs them of the ways they will have to "temporarily" help out until a replacement is hired, which is unlikely to occur before well into next year. The band continues to play "Nearer, My God, to Thee" while the ship slowly shrinks into the glassy waters. I shout swimming lessons from my one-man lifeboat to those stranded on deck.

A really dumb thing that brings me down is seeing one of my friends on instagram post something and noticing that their picture accumulated more comments than the total likes of my last two posts

Maybe this is what they mean when they say social media is bad for your mental health
