Mountain dwarves are back. I can follow the flowchart again.

I used to love DCSS. I think that love started falling off when they started their quest to streamline and balance. It was FUN when things were more complicated and unbalanced. I get that can make it harder to win consistently but it was more interesting. There were builds that were super broken, builds that were nearly impossible. There were surprises good and bad around every corner and down every staircase.

And then they went on a quest to streamline and balance and honestly it kinda ruined the whole thing for me. Go back to the days of unbalanced builds and pure RNG. Give me lava orcs again

I fell off around the same time, but I think they've finally gotten back to a good place. There's a lot of weird toys to play with, and they've added enough bespoke mechanics to monsters that it feels like a part of the game, instead of just manticores and the Shoals monsters behaving differently from everything else. They've also gotten their heads out of their asses about difficulty, and the main menu acknowledges that some species are easier than others.
