"Sure but you only know, like, five."

[–] teft@lemmy.world 67 points 5 months ago (1 children)

But one of those is fireball and I have metamagic so.....

With proper use of metamagic, every spell is potentially like five different spells. Poindexter over here might have two dozen different named spells written down in his diary, but I know two fire based spells and I can make each of them do about eight different things, half of which aren't even fire damage.

It's the difference between writing down a recipe, and knowing how to cook.

Are wizards restricted from meta magic feats in 5th?

If they are that just proves that 3.0/3.5 (3.25) is the best edition thus far.

Only sorcerers get them as a class feature, but any spellcaster can take the metamagic adept feat

PF1.0 is still there for you

[–] HipsterTenZero@dormi.zone 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You can still play it, you know. Those rules didn't go anywhere.

[–] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

No, just my time. And friends.

In 5e, metamagic is a sorcerer class feature

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Ok, that's some BS. Clerics, Wizards, Druids, Sorcerers, Bards and probably a bunch of other prestige classes could absolutely use meta-magic feats in 3.0, 3.5 and the eventual 3.25 which blends 3.0 and 3.5. The group just decides in the beginning if they will use the stronger or weaker rules, and plays 3.25 with that set of rules, though pretty much everyone goes with the weaker set of rules for druids, because they were OP in 3.0 and while they buffed all the martial classes for 3.5 so they could keep up with the other magical classes, they nerfed every magical class except druids, which they made even more OP.

The real decision is if you're going to use the stronger or weaker rules for the magical classes, except druids. For martial classes, use the stronger rules. For druids use the weaker rules. For the rest of the magic classes, use the stronger rules if you want to become gods, use the weaker rules if you only want to become an epic level party.

In 5E, every caster has a unique mechanical quirk. Wizards know spells, prepare spells and have spell slots, and they have the most. Clerics know every spell but prepare a limited number. Warlocks have the fewest spells and slots, but always cast at max level and get slots back on short rest, and can trade known spells on level up. Sorcerers get metamagic. Bard is a support caster who is also a rogue. Ranger is a support caster who is also a fighter. Druid is a support caster who is also a monster. And monk gets psionic spells that aren't spells and don't use spell slots.

I don't know the reference material, so I saw Snape from the back in the first picture. I was surprised in the second half.

True polymorph is a hell of a drug.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Let's see you just know 12 new spells every day, Ms. Cool Person.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 17 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I only need to know one.

And it's called "Fireball."

[–] myrrh@ttrpg.network 14 points 5 months ago (1 children)

...or thunderball, or lightningball, or acidball, or poisonball: do they teach you wizards nothing about improvisation?..

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Sure, it's called Chromatic Orb, one spell that does all that. But I suppose a sorcerer could just know that spell too.

[–] Riker@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

Oh honey. Chromatic orb is the cheap version of Acidball

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

I've always felt like Ice Storm was a better spell, but it is one level higher. I like its increased damage radius, and difficult terrain that it creates.

[–] purrtastic@lemmy.nz 14 points 5 months ago

No doubt no doubt no doubt

[–] lemmyvore@feddit.nl 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Wow get a load of Miss Eskarina Smith over here. 🙄

[–] dwemthy@lemdro.id 5 points 5 months ago

With that staff she's at least dipped into hexblade warlock
