Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1959, U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country following the victory of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) at the Battle of Santa Clara, marking the successful conclusion of the Cuban Revolution.

The 26th of July Movement takes its name from the date of with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, however, the movement bearing this name was not formally organized until the attackers were released from prison in 1955. Public resistance continued sporadically until November 1956, when 80 members of the M-26-7 returned from exile.

Soon after landing on the island, a separate revolutionary group, the "Directorio Revoluncionari Estudiantil" (DRE), unsuccessfully attempted an attack on the Presidential Palace in Havana.

Throughout 1957, armed resistance from groups such as the DRE and M-26-7 would escalate. After a failed offensive by the government against rebels in the summer of 1958, the rebels launched a major counter-offensive.

On December 28th, 1958, after a fraudulent election in favor of Batista, revolutionary forces reached the city of Santa Clara. Seizing equipment from an armored train intended to transport government reinforcements, the rebels quickly captured the city, prompting Batista to panic and flee to the Dominican Republic with a personal fortune of more than $300 million.

In the following days, revolutionary forces entered Havana with no resistance, and Castro established a provisional government. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist–Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

Batista later settled in fascist Spain, dying there in 1973 at the age of 72.

Today I'm angry at the word "innovation". Could there even be a contemporary word with less meaning? What does it even really mean? Capacity to hustle and funnel cash money into the pockets of shareholders? The ratio between use value and monetary value, i.e. the more useless bullshit something is compared to its price, the more innovative it is? I can't believe this shit.

ppl be like "rust cohle would be insufferable in real life u would not like being around him" but nah i disagree i think he'd be cool and nice, my man spends over half his waking hours around socipoathic chuds complicit in a epstein ring of course he's edgy and standoffish. it's a nice subtle stroke of characterization that he's a lot sweeter around kind normal people (i.e. his friendship with maggie).

(huh. is my brain telling me i should rewatch true detective season 1 again? clueless )

Crushposting:

My last crushpost got a little weird. They usually don’t get much attention, and what little there is I think is usually men. So I wrote a self-crit here that should be a good opportunity for women and enbies to bring up what you find problematic.

Tagging the people from the original thread, happy to get your input, but if you’d rather just move on that’s obviously also fine. (It’s probably better to comment in that post over on /c/selfcrit since this mega will get locked.)@Tomboymoder@hexbear.net @Eco@hexbear.net @GayTuckerCarlson@hexbear.net @frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml @SoylentSnake@hexbear.net @Alaskaball@hexbear.net

a large chunk of the eastern US is expecting a large snowstorm between Sunday and Tuesday with an accompanying deep freeze.

Ryan Hall Y'all video

NWS:

It very much remains the case that the upcoming short to med-range winter pattern from the weekend into early next week will be especially impactful for a broad swath of the central to eastern U.S.. An upper trough in the central U.S. Sunday will produce a consolidating surface low in the Southern Plains. Precipitation is expected to push across the eastern half of the U.S. with this low and good dynamical support aloft. Cold air in place will favor widespread heavy snow that will be heavy across areas from the Central Plains, Mid-Mississippi Valley, and Ohio Valley Sunday. Snow will push into the Mid-Atlantic Sunday night into Monday. Just to the south, there is a relatively broad transitional area that will see impactful mixed precipitation types, transitioning between multiple p-types and/or seeing snow and sleet/freezing rain. Potentially significant sleet and freezing rain are possible across the Ozarks east to the Tennessee Valley and south-central Appalachians/Mid- Atlantic. WPC is issuing Key Messages for this winter storm. Meanwhile farther south in the warm sector, expect lingering trailing frontal showers and thunderstorms to spread eastward into and across the Southeast into Monday.
...
Colder than normal temperatures are likely across the central and eastern U.S. underneath rounds of upper troughing and with cold surface high pressure systems. Notable cold is possible in the northern tier, with even high temperatures barely reaching 0F and lows between -10F and -20F in some areas. This should not be record breaking, but the cold could still be hazardous as wind chill values may dip below -20F to -30F. Temperature anomalies of 10-20 degrees are also likely across parts of the northern/central Plains to Middle Mississippi and Ohio Valleys to Appalachians into much of next week, especially if areas are snow covered and hold temperatures down. Meanwhile, initial upper ridging in the western U.S. will allow for slightly above normal temperatures in the Intermountain West, and 10-20 degrees above normal anomalies in the south-central U.S. Sunday will cool to below normal behind a cold front by Monday. The upper pattern in the West is uncertain by midweek next week, causing temperatures to be in question, but there may be a trend toward warming for parts of the West.

hoping the snow is fluffy and fine instead of wet and heavy. it is already pretty cold for most of us and isn't expected to get above freezing before then, so it seems possible, and the sleet and ice line at the southern edge of the storm is predicted to be relatively narrow, but still very worried about all the people and pets sheltering outside a heated building.

My cat is such an asshole.

Whenever I do something he likes I have to be on guard because he'll attack me when I try to leave the room. I just had him on my lap petting him for 15 minutes, and when I left the room he carefully watched me until I wasn't paying attention and really clawed my leg, making me drop my coffee.

He'll also bite you if he's really liking how you pet him and then change it up.

He was a feral kitten that didn't like being pet at all for the first year, I'm sure the behavior is something related to that, but it's still really frustrating. It's like he doesn't want me to be nice to him, even though he's generally a sweet cat now.

Sister taught her dog to ring a bell when she needs to go out. Turns out she rings it whenever she wants attention, or to beg for food, or if she's just bored. That infernal ringing is driving me MAD matt-joker they say every time a bell rings a angel gets another pair of wings. I think this dog is songlehandedly responsible for thevexistence of those biblically accurate Angels angel-biblical they're running out of room to stick the damn things

porky-happy: “There is no such thing as coercion. If you don’t like the way you’re treated at a job just leave….oh by the way working class, I need you to have more kids. Get to it.”

yes-honey-left: “What if we don’t want to have kids for your sake?”

porky-happy: “Oh, that’s easy. I will make women second class citizens and take away what little infrastructure is available to allow poor people to ever set foot on a college campus! After all, I wasn’t asking you to have kids. I was ordering you to!” (yes, all of this can be found in the heritage foundation agenda.)

Made pot o bean but hear me out this time used no oil and only fresh spices (peppers, garlic, bayleaves) no imitation stock. It's all an effort to eat more natural also because for a week I've ran out of imitation stock and couldn't be asked to get more.

Honestly just reminds me of how my parents used to make beans growing up in a slow cooker full of water with just some chilies, onion, and garlic and I'm here for it.

Hmm maybe Trump isn't gonna make it the next 4 years. All these dudes are turning out to be his guys. Maybe it's an accelerationist thing where they need to kill him to turn him into a martyr. The legend of Donald Trump is more appealing than the actual Donald Trump that is being controlled by Musk and others.
