me and my dog

On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.

Are you really the human? Or the dog pretending to be the human? 🧐

That means BestBuy effectively gets a $700+ dollars interest free loan from me for a few months, since courts take months.

I might have to, ugh. But at least I tried dealing with BestBuy first so now the cops can't just say "civil matter" and tell me to get out.

Its a last resort for me, I wouldn't go to the police as a first option. I try to exhaust other options first.

I had a bad experience with the police with a, in my view, an unjustified arrest a few years ago. Not to mention, cops didn't do anything when someone strong-arm robbed my mother. Nor when someone stole her identity, even when she has a possible address and phone number of the perp. Nor when that time someone was banging on my door in the middle of the night, either harassing us, or potentially trying to break in (my parents run a small bussiness, so perhaps it's someone with a grudge that found our address), I called the police and those people banging on my door left right before the police came, possibly because they saw the cops coming, I had a video of them sitting on my doorsteps for half an hour, trying to peek in the house, through the mail slot and the windows, and just aggressively banging on the door every few minutes. Its not soliciting either, they didn't have a clipboard or anything like that. So anyways, they left before the police came. I told the officers what happened, I said I had a video. My whole family was home and they also explained the same thing. The cops just said something along the lines of kparaphrased): "So they didn't break in right?" and wouldn't even take the videos we have to just store in it their database for future references. Like I wasn't even asking them to investigate, just to record it into the police records. They wouldn't care. They said we shouldn't have called because "no crime have occured". I mean, like: two complete strangers stood outside my house in the middle of the night and banged on the door for half an hour that's fucking harassment. I have a video, and they won't even take it.

So I ended up just saying "Sorry to bother y'all, have a good rest of the night" so I don't get shot, but deep inside, I just felt like shit for even bothering to call. Like good thing they didn't actually try to break in, but what if they had?

And can I mention how they took like 30 minutes to respond to a possible home invasion? (well I know they didn't end up breaking in, but they could have)

So after all this, seeing someone in police uniform gives me PTSD (not literally ptsd, but you know what I'm saying). In my city, there are no "online reports" yet, I have to go to a police station or call for them to send an officer to take the report. Nah fam, that's just gonna be "it's a civil matter, please don't bother us again". Besides, I never even obtained possession of the item, it arrived on a neighbor's doorsteps very briefly, and never really left the posession of the driver. So it's really the driver stealing from Doordash, Doordash failing to fullfill their agreement with BestBuy, and BestBuy failing to fullfill their agreement with me.

I would probably have to actually try talk to the police if the Bank fucks with me. But until then, I'm trying to minimize police contact as much as possible given the um... recent unstable political situation here in the US.

If I got robbed in ths street, that's a different story. The police would probably at least file the report. But not getting a package? The cops would laught in my face and tell me to contact the merchant and/or the financial institutions first.

But it still took me 9 months of fighting with the store to get a refund and I was accused by the manager of creating a “loss issue.”

9 months?

I mean, does your country have strong customer protections? I know some countries don't and you'd have to deal with the merchant. But if your country does have consumer protections, you probably should've filed a dispute, because they have to be filed within 60 days in the banks I've used, so I would not have waited that long because that's kinda just gambling on the store playing nice.

have an order arriving today from Best Buy! It’s being handled by DoorDash… 🤞

OMG you need to give us an update on if it arrives. I hope you have better luck, if not, you could alway make another post on this comm 😉

I'm not sure if anyone cares about an update, but I wanna just vent a bit.

I got the email (as shown in the screenshot) on June 25 very late at night.

Welp, I filed a Chargeback immedialy upon reading that. Guess that's one store I can't go to anymore... 🤷‍♂️

Still have yet to hear back from the bank on their process, but they say they'll "temporarily credit the balance" while they "investigate".

If my Bank decides to screw with me, the next update is probably gonna be in "c/ActuallyInfuriating" (I hope everything goes through fine, fingers crossed)

I did some online searching, and found like a few different posts from Reddit with others saying they got the same "completed investigation... unable to provide refund or replacement" bullshit.

They didn't even give me a chance to send the video evidence. The rep on the phone said they would "contact me there are any updates or request further information", but didn't tell me where to send the video to. Nor did anyone contacted me to request it.

What I think happened with the so-called "investigation" is that, BestBuy just deferred it to Doordash, and they must've looked at the picture taken by the driver and just sided with their driver to protect their bottom line, and BestBuy just accepted that as an explanation.

Pictures are stationary lmfao. That proves nothing. Only that the package was at the door (which was actually a neighbor's door btw), not that the driver didn't just snatched it immediately after.

Tbh, I doubt things would change much even if they got the video, they don't take this seriously at all. They would've just said the video was blurry and deny refund.

Btw: I ended up ordering a different laptop from Amazon and they shipped with UPS and it arrived safely, with all security seals intact. I don't like how Amazon is taking over everything and have become monopolistic, but at least their stuff actually arrives...

r/frugal and r/minimalism have joined the chat

We need those on Lemmy

I'm thinking the future is gonna have a "Hand Terminal" sort of thing that replaces everything.

Reason I'm asking is because there are some people claiming that the TPM is a backdoor or something. I wonder if people on Lemmy subscribe to that belief, or no?

Nah

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of big corporations, but Schools are gonna have to be using Device Management programs regardless of what OS they use (so that kids don't play video games, or use social media, or watch adult videos, in the classroom). Giving kids a Managed Windows Laptop with tons of restrictions does nothing to "improve tech literacy" either, so just as bad as a chrombook.

Also, wealth is also a factor. If you only have money for one device, and everyone has a smartphone, and you kids are gonna get socially ostricized in school for not having one, of course you're gonna prioritize giving them a smartphone first, which in turn, delays them learning how to use a computer, and I mean like a computer you actually own and can modify however you want, as opposed to the school-owned managed device. (Its harder to learn that when you're older)

Also is it “justice” to put someone in jail? Let’s say there’s no way to return what was stolen (money spent, property sold/destroyed etc). It certainly doesn’t stop them from doing more crime

Tbh I kinda just gave up on trying to have to deal with cops. A driver stole my laptop that he was supposed to deliver, I just simply call the store (BestBuy) and told them I never got it, if the corporations want to deal with that thieving scumbag of a driver, its their problem, I just want my money back (or just chargeback if they refuse to refund), I don't feel like wasting time with cops that will do nothing anyways, especially if the refund happens, then I would technically not be out anything (besides wasting a bunch of time).

It's BestBuy's fault for using something as sketchy as DoorDash.

I'm in the US and honestly I've just kinda just accepted this as a fact of life, cops won't do shit, similar to many developing nations in the world. Anything short of actually someone dying, and cops don't seem to care. Got mugged? Oh well, tough luck buddy, at least you didn't die

How has your experience been? Is your country/area different?

My name is Walter ~~Hartwell~~ Los Pollos Hermanos White, if you are watching this, I'm probably dead, murder by my brother in law, Hank Alberquerque DEA Schrader

privacy.com is available if you're in he US

But this is essentially shifting trust to them instead. Its like a VPN, but for payments. But given the nature of anti-money-laundering laws, its only safe from like amazon or your bank (provided you trust privacy.com to not sell your data); The government can definitely have no issues supoena all your purchases.

That and amazon lockers means you can kinda keep purchases somewhat secret. Like um.. adult stuff 😏

I use my real name for packages in case I need support if there's a problem with the delivery, but like if I went to a restaurant, or order food delivery, I'd probably use a fake name so people don't be judging my fatass lol.

(For people who don't know, BestBuy is an electronics store that is common in the USA)

This would be in c/ActuallyInfuriating if the consumer protections weren't as good, but for now, its just a chargeback away from fixing the problem. (I hope the bank doesn't fucks me over. If they fuck with me, then this is gonna end up in Actually Infuriating). Anyways:

Two days ago, I bought a laptop on BestBuy, but they didn't use UPS like they had in the past, instead they used Doordash 🤦‍♂️. When I saw that, I wanted to cancel because I didn't trust fucking Doordash, but it didn't let me cancel, so I just hoped nothing bad happens.

Oh wow, my gut feeling about Doordash actually predicted the future.

So, today it was supppsed to be delivered, I saw the guy park in front of my house for a few minutes (I know that's him because I saw him on the map on the Doordash tracking link), dude walked out, looked my house, went back into his car, drove to the back alleyway (its a neighborhood of single family row-houses), I saw him on my CCTV cameras, he place down the package at a neighbor's back door, take a pickture, then grabbed it place it back in his car, then quickly drove away.

Bruh.

Now I have to make some phonecalls. Thanks, corporate, great fucking job. I hope the CEO of bestbuy can choke on his pay increase.

And if you are wonder why I didn't just go to BestBuy, I live in a car-centric city and I don't have easy access to a car, and carrying big electronics in public transit is just asking for someone to mug you.

At this point, corporations are just in a race to see who gets to be crowned the worst corporation. I mean I hate Amazon and Bezos too, but at least they have a PIN verification system now, so drivers can't just steal stuff, wtf is BestBuy doing? Fuck these shitty corporation.

I wish I could show you the camera footage, but don't wanna get doxed.

Probably not using ~~best~WorstBuy again, not with this bullshit "Doordash" delivery. What an actual disaster.

Btw I tried calling bestbuy, they had a fucking voice-bot thing that refused to let me talk to a human until 48 hours has passed. So I just go straight for the dispute, right? I don't wanna wait 48 hours.

Update: So I got through the bot thing by spamming 0 (or perhaps some other key, I can't be sure), I got to a rep and explained the situation, they said they send a request to BestBuy and BestBuy will do an "investigation" with Doordash, whatever that means, and then refund. They said it's supposed to take 3 bussiness days. Well, today is Thursday, Tomorrow is Friday, so I'm guessing by Tuesday end of the day it's supposed to be resolved?

I mean, I'm giving them 1 week. I'm definitely filing that dispute the Friday next week. Technically I have 60 days to dispute, but I'm gonna stay on the safe side and 1 week is all I'm giving. I'm really wanting to just file right now, but I'm don't want to get banned from BestBuy for life just yet, but if they don't refund within a week, I'm just gonna have to be banned from bestbuy, I guess... 🤷‍♂️

Gonna update later if y'all are still curious in a few days.
