I get your frustration. Certs matter education matters too, the problem that you have is that i have 20+ resumes that look exactly like yours. I cant interview them all. So i need something that makes you stand out.

If you have a github accoutn thats the easiest way. Add a link to your resume and people will look at the work you've done for class projects and go off of that.

Personal projects dont have to be ones that cost money assuming you have at least one computer. Write up a simple powershell script to handle a task that you need to do or something. Extra points if its on git hub so somebody can look at it.

Thats actually why i brough up the pihole project that one can be setup on any computer in a home network very easily. Displays basic sysadmin/networking skills to setup, and is pretty cool to have once its done. To be fair that one takes a bit more work though.

You dont have to go that far out of your way to do some of these and they do separate you from the crowd.

Our fields are close enough that i can comment on this.

When I'm looking at your resume here's what i gather about you. Student, with no relevant job experience who has done school projects that might indicate alignment with what we're doing.

The problem with resumes like these are that I have no proof that you're capable and its not fair of me to expect proof because that comes with experience.

What I usually do is look for passion projects. Anything that indicates that you have a genuine interest in the field that i can follow up on. Then I'll talk to you in an interview about that to confirm your problem solving skills.

Pretty much everything else can be taught.

Lets say you configured a nas server at your house or self hosted something like pihole or jellyfin (career specific) that stands put way more than a class project.

This actually highlights my issue with it. Both this and racism feel the same to me. Even though I aknowledge that they clearly aren't.

End of the day I'm still being judged for something i didn't do and wouldn't ever do. And that sucks.

But seriously fuck my feelings, do what you have to to stay safe

Plumbing. I could live without almost every modern comfort but a flushable toilet

This one surprises me. I had always thought Quebec had a strong cultural identity. How do you see it happening?
