My partner and I do a lot of board games together, and I have been looking for a 2 person game we can do together. I wanted to get it for them for the holiday present season. We prefer co op games but enjoy competitive games too if it's lightly competitive (like you can get points but can't easily take points from the other). Any suggestions for board or card games that you enjoy?

Gosh, this is a huge space to explore, you have a lot of options. I would take a look at this game picker tool, which will show you some options at various play lengths.

For some relatively non-confrontational games, I would recommend:

  • The Castles of Burgundy
  • Troyes
  • 7 Wonders Duel
  • Clank!: Catacombs

A couple of good short card games:

  • Sea Salt & Pepper
  • Lost Cities

And then don't discount standard deck card games as an option - you already have the components, and they're great games! The standard two player recommendations would be:

  • Gin Rummy
  • Cribbage

...but there is a huge world of standard deck games out there, and I would recommend:

  • East-West
  • Haggis
  • Court of the Medici

A few more recommendations:

  • Forest Shuffle - build a little forest ecosystem from your hand of cards
  • Cascadia - build a little ecosystem by drawing tiles

I like confrontational games, so I gotta recommend at least one, and my unorthodox 2 player recommendation is:

  • Inis - an area control and card drafting game about vying celtic tribes. This is more typically played as a 3 to 5 player game, but I think is also a really great 2 player game.
