possible he managed to go to purgatory but idk. how good is St Peter at diffusing bad faith arguements

We all know that conservatives are fucking liars: in fact their whole ideology is dependent on it, because without lies and mass disinformation, they’d lose much of their base of support.

I’ve noticed online, when I’m “debating” conservatives, they do this peculiar thing that I call “code switching” for lack of a better term.

In particular I notice this in discussions related to homelessness. Or maybe it’s just the context in which I see their most egregious display of this behavior.

Take the subject of the bottle bill, for instance.

In my state and a few others, when you buy drinks with certain recyclable containers (it varies by state in weird ways, like frex you can’t return cans that contained wine, even though canned wines come in exactly the same kind of can AFAIK) you pay an extra “bottle deposit,” usually 5¢-10¢, which anyone can redeem at certain locations. It’s a boon for for the poor and homeless, or just anyone who wants to make $5 appear out of thin air.

And for the homeless, it’s a damn near cottage industry. Some of my friends make more money “canning” than I made when I was working. And that’s been a thing for decades. Only recently has it become a problem, for some people.

And it’s become a problem, because of fentanyl.

These pieces of shit are trying to get the bottle bill repealed. And they’re facing an uphill battle for two reasons:

  1. The majority of people support the bottle bill.
  2. The majority of people don’t hate the homeless so much/aren’t so ghoulish that they’re cool with depriving all of us of an income because “fentanyl.”

So they come up with bullshit pretend arguments like, oh consumers are so sick of paying so much money (ten fucking cents)! Or some disgusting paternalistic argument RE: homeless people.

And what’s really fucking weird about it is they don’t try too hard at hiding how they really feel. I see them “code switch” all the time in the same comment section or whatever, telling one person “they’re breaking the law letting people return $40 worth of cans a day!” (oh heavens!) and another “put these disgusting zombies in camps,” probably banking on the average American’s dreadfully low reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

So yeah. Pardon my using this thread as an excuse to practice my writing. What is this bullshit called?

My name is Soliman, a young student from Gaza.

For months, my family and I have been displaced, living without a safe home, without stability, and with the constant fear of tomorrow.

We once had a small farm with olive and citrus trees. It wasn’t just our source of income — it was a place full of dreams and memories. Today, it is gone, and survival has become our only daily goal.

As the eldest son, I carry the responsibility of helping my parents and younger siblings. We are in urgent need of food, clean water, clothing, and a safe shelter, especially with winter approaching.

Every small donation will directly help us cover our basic needs and bring us closer to living with dignity again. Your kindness means the world to us.

With gratitude,

Soliman

What's happening in Nepal? (www.livemint.com)

The wife of a former communist prime minister died after their house was set on fire during massive protests which were very violent.

Nepal has multiple large communist parties, some of which are in the current government.

Can anyone more knowledgeable than me give some updates and the context in which to understand all of this.

Hello Comrades … this is my sister r in the hospital. She has been going through so much pain and weakness. needing tests, daily injections and sometimes oxygen just to breathe. Watching her like this is heartbreaking .. the hardest part is that the hospital won’t continue her treatment without us clearing the bills. The hospital has started being harsh on us.

We urgently need 1,670 USD to cover her hospital bill and oxygen. So far with kind support, we’ve managed 490 USD and we are still far from the goal. Every single day the bill increases. I am honestly scared of what might happen if we can’t pay. I thought of getting her out of the hospital because now we have nothing else to do but she is not well yet.

Please I’m begging if you are reading this to kindly consider helping us. No amount is too small. And even if you can’t donate, a simple share could go a long way.

The support link is in my profile/bio. Thank you so much for every bit of love and support during this desperate time.

US, EU, even China and India. Regardless where you are, the economy sucks, housing is not affordable, prices are high, jobs are stagnant and class mobility is nonexistent (except maybe in China).

I dont have time to prepare anything as of late and I've just been surviving of curry and pasta from the local supermarket and I'm not eating enough either

What are some good recipes that are easy to prepare when not having time? I dont mind them being repetitive or whatever, lots in quantity would help so its for multiple days. Vegan is fine, I want to become Vegan long term, maybe Vegetarian at first, but I must begin eating enough atm

I'm a beginner at cooking FYI so I can't do anything complex. It can be a "college meal", I just dont want to go hungry anymore cause I'm too tired to do anything lol and I dont want supermarket frozen bs

The early 1990's are called the 'special period' in Cuban historiography. Before this era Cuba's biggest trading partner was the soviet union. And as the Soviet Union ceased to exist this had some serious economic ramifications for the small island nation. Around the same time the idea of Juche (self reliance) took hold in North Korea.

Most of the inaction I bear has been due to fear. Fear of reprimand and fear of violence in particular.

I'm reading a lot of lefty stuff (old posts, old articles, hoping I can make my way to books) and it seems like my biggest hurdle to becoming a proper leftist will be removing myself of these fears, if I ever want to do anything productive.

But fuck, fear is just so prevalent in my life. It could be my trauma, my privilege or literally anything else I'm not aware of. Whatever the cause, I don't like it, it's made me a worse person, and I wanna get rid of it.

Seeing as most of you are good about this, I want to hear about how you stopped letting fear and (social/physical) self-preservation control you.

I've recently been writing unofficial English-language subtitles for a documentary miniseries about Norwegian Sign Language (NSL), mainly based on the Norwegian-language spoken interpretation. And this documentary miniseries includes a sketch showing two elderly Deaf people using "NSL youth slang". I have interim rendered the dialog in this sketch in a form of awkward, performative pseudo-AAVE, because I feel like this best reflects the cultural dynamic of a lot of Norwegian and NSL "youth slang" coming from racialized communities that the old people in question are decidedly not a part of — similar to AAVE terms making their way into GenAm, right?

But to avoid stepping in the salad I figured this was a point where I should ask for general feedback, especially from those who grew up speaking AAVE. Is this a good translation or is there something I should do differently?

The scene in question is 6:23 to 7:32 in this video.

And here's my translation:

English + Norwegian w/ glossNote: .ENG in the gloss means that a word or phrase is from English; .CLQ means that a word or phrase is otherwise colloquial in some way. I have translated most phrases word for word instead of as a whole. EMPH refers to an emphatic particle here.

I could easily write three paragraphs about each line, but I think I'll just write explanations of my decisions if anybody asks for them, either for individual words or for whole lines — hence the numbers in parentheses.

They think these LLMs are going to be a whole new advertising platform too. They think you're going to be surrounded all day by LLM assistants that won't stop bringing up products and talking about them favorably, and that this is going to make you more likely to buy the product.

It seems like its been a fucking time for more than just me, so doing another check-in thread to see how yall are holding up. Especially since its been a LONG time since ive done one of these.

Got something you wanna vent about? Wanna share something cool? Nows the time!

Love you all Care-Comrade

For my own part - back from tour. The band made money, but I am broke. Fortunately, starting my first job in 2 years on Monday, and whats more, ITS FUCKING COOL! Finally out of the tech field, and working thru Americorps to help with a local anti-homelessness organization. Im gonna be doing back end stuff interfacing with other local orgs, but its still a job im happy to have and can be personally proud of rather than working with stupid bullshit SAAS stuff. Met a hexbear on tour and had a great time with them, and after 3 floods in a week, my partner and I are moved into a new apartment and finishing unpacking. This time were on the 4th floor! Nice building, no complaints, place is modern looking and very clean, it just feels surreal after everything that brought us here.

The ding ding ditch post reminded me.

I assumed some drunk friends were doing that one night to our apartment, but nope just shotguns in the face and a hall full of oinkers. Never found out why - just that they got a report of violence breaking out at a large party in our apartment (nope just a handful of dudes in an apartment watching space odyssey during finals week lol.)

I'm having a bit of a nervous fit over here, so I could really use the advice. The job offer was nothing special, not a dream job but also not a bullshit job, and I applied out of sheer force of habit. The job does not interest me I'm semi-qualified, as in I have a degree that by default over-qualifies me yet it is in a completely different field. The last mail they sent me a couple of minutes ago said something like "We'd deeply regret if you turned us down", which is something I have never gotten after applying for a job.

The reason why I haven't replied with a firm "No" is that I'm still looking for a job. However, my current situation is that I may get something that pays less than this "boring job", but is morally much more acceptable for me, in a couple of months. It's not a long shot, the training for this other job is just gonna happen in a month, so I don't know until I passed the training.

So, question is, should I just show up to the interview for the job that I don't care about or should I just say no again? I'm leaning towards the latter, but I wonder if I would get in trouble with my unemployment counselor for not accepting a job interview invite.

Edit: I should point out that the job offer is in the public sector. (Sorry for the vagueness, I'm trying not to doxx myself)

I'm seeking information and analyses on the link between return to land movements and fascism.

It's easy to speculate on the links between the two, particularly in settler colonial states where settlers spreading out working the land entrenches the settler's claim to the land. Plus the Nazis were quite on the nose with the whole "lebensraum" concept. But I'd like to understand the links more rigorously.

I'm especially interested in what the modern relationship consists of in old, well established settler colonies like the US, Canada, and Australia where it seems settler colonialism is no longer that popular of an ideology, and they try to somewhat distance themselves from their origins.

I made that and I put it in c/memes even though it's not a meme. For the next ones I make...

  • Is there a better comm to put them in?

  • Can I put them in c/CTH? Is are they a mismatch for the sub?

I think I might have developed a small addiction to Hexbear, as despite joining just 4 days ago, I have done almost nothing but use Hexbear.

Seeing as I'm trying to improve myself, I'm thinking about trying to use Hexbear less so I don't become a full on posting addict. With that in mind, what are the hours with the most amount of activity? I know Hexbear always has some activity, but I wanna know the times it's okay to "skip" reading / posting on Hexbear and what time's it's not.
