The stems and leaves are virtually tasteless and make eating strawberries easier. They even have nutritional value!

Why YSK: It's an easy way to eat strawberries faster and with less mess while reducing food waste.

I mean technically you're supposed to be able to eat the brown fuzzy skin on kiwis but I'm not going to be doing that

[–] baconeater@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You're missing out! Kiwis are great to eat whole. Way less messy as well (no need to dirty a knife or a spoon to eat them). Plus as an added bonus you get to freak out people who don't know that you can eat the skin!

[–] Glifted@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I once ate a whole kiwi in front of my wife. That's the closest we ever came to getting a divorce.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

She stayed with you even though you're a cannibal - that's the kind of devotion you rarely see any more these days.

[–] thirdtower@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That must be one rock solid relationship.

[–] Kaijobu@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 year ago

Another plus, it contains a lot of nutrition value of the fruit. But the kiwi should be of better quality as everything used on the growing field can also potentially be found in the skin.

Also, slices of kiwi, including skin, are perfect on a pizza margherita. My go to pizza if I have some kiwis left.

[–] Kroxx@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah I'm with ya! I'll continue to lick all those brown fuzzy fibers off the fruit and proceed to cough it all up like a hairball before eating like GOD intended!

[–] zammy95@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

One of my best friends swears by eating the skin. Haven't tried, I'm scared. Lol

[–] Serpent@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I eat it.. honestly, it is delicious. Slightly bitter and sour whilst adding some nice texture.

[–] zammy95@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'll have to give it a shot

[–] T1325@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

See if you can get some golden kiwis, then they don't even have hairs on the skin

[–] greenmarty@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Main reason I don't eat it is that it's unclear to me what else am I eating with the hairy skin of kiwi. It's not that easy to clean as let's say apple. And in random cases it causes peoeple to get mouth ulcers.

[–] dotancohen@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I started suffering mouth ulcers shortly after independently discovering that the kiwi skin is edible. It took some time to figure out what the cause was, because the sores would develop days after eating them.

[–] derf82@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

They still have texture, and I don’t want leaves and stems in my berries.

[–] dromicieomimus@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

i save the ends with the leaves as a treat for my guinea pigs. they sure like them a lot more than i do

Pour riverwater in your shoes. It's cheap, it's easy, and nobody is stopping you.

[–] RedNeedle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Did this get reposted somewhere notable recently? This is the third time today I've seen someone reference this ten year old post

[–] Fosheze@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not that I know of. That's just what "eat the strawberry stem because it won't hurt you" reminded me of.

[–] RedNeedle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Fair enough! It's a classic.

Also you can feed strawberry tops and leaves to dogs, if you have any, in moderation. They lose their minds over them!

[–] DerpyPoint@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I always thought the leaves are inedible 😅

[–] jcqzu@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Same, I feel like I immediately assume the leaves of any fruit or veggie are inedible

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're not much of a salad person are you?

[–] jcqzu@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Wow I’m literally eating a salad right now and didn’t even correlate the two

[–] CapitalismsRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Well yippee, that's handy. I have eaten apples whole for years, the same thought never occurred to me for strawberries.

[–] zork@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

"I would throw up NOW!"

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hopefully you spit out the seeds? They contain amygdalin, a substance that releases cyanide when it comes into contact with human digestive enzymes. A few apples worth of seeds isn't enough to kill you or anything, and the seeds are apparently safe if you swallow them whole.

[–] justhach@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm confused. You comment looks like two different people making different points lol

FWIW I have eaten apples whole for years, and I have not died of cyanide poisoning yet.

Yeah something came up as I was typing out a wrap-up conclusion statement so I posted my comment as-is. Congratulations on your continued existence!

[–] Levii@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Are you sure? Whats your source? Pics or it didnt happen?

[–] greenmarty@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I used to eat them like that back in the day we had them in garden. It's not tasteless, it tastes like grass or something but it's not bad taste. Definitely better to eat than trow it away.

[–] greenfish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Who knew my 3yo was right all along!

[–] GustavoM@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That also goes for eating your own shit and even plastic.

[–] _MoveSwiftly@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Could you please add a "Why YSK:"? It's rule #2. :)

Certainly, thank you for the reminder. :)

[–] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

I made it the fuck up!

[–] OsakaWilson@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You can eat the skin on a kiwifruit too, but ew.

[–] potoo22@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Oh man, I'm gonna freak out my friends with this.

[–] Eczpurt@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If it's too fuzzy yes but there are some with a lot less fuzz and the skin adds a great tartness to a properly ripe kiwi. I'd imagine there's bonus nutritional value to boot!

[–] MetaCubed@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Tons of vitamin E, folates, and antioxidants apparently

[–] Nioxic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"nutritional value"... lol I've not tried but... sure. Btw you can do the same with Kiwis

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've heard a lot of fruits have high nutritional value in the parts people don't eat (like banana peels). But I'm also not a sociopath.

[–] Bird_On_Biff@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure even gorillas don't eat the peals. We should follow their example

As the leaves decay they produce hydrogen cyanide. So...

[–] potoo22@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Don't eat decaying leaves. Got it.
