We're just posting anti-union propaganda on the fediverse now?

Are y'all at least getting paid for it? fedposting

How many times does satire and irony posting have to backfire on us before we realize that shit only works if the person is smart enough to be in on the joke; otherwise we're just propagandizing against ourselves.

Which really is the cardinal sin.

Seconded.

It sure looked like a bunch of anti-union posts.

Do it once, it’s satire. Do it 20 times, it just looks like an endorsement.

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 75 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's only a level above an ironic racist or ironic transphobic comm. Irony is fine on a post or comment level, but ironic comms really shouldn't exist.

irony poisoning, it's bad folks! Boomers got lead in their blood but by god zoomers have iron in their brain

edit: i do wanna point out that this isn't so much an issue of 'smartness' as "large groups generally fail to understand anything more subtle than a hammer to the head" thing (i.e. a critique of irony in mass consumer culture of which the internet is a part)

There's a certain amount of subtlety to the posts that you get when you're in the loop but that just look like boilerplate propaganda when you're out of it.

Large diverse groups aren't going to recognize the tongue-in-cheek irony, so they'll either see it as outright cringe or low effort pasta. I don't really see this as influencing anyone, though. Its very ForwardsFromGrandma material.

Agreed, not the best wording on my part, but in my head the list of words I could use (informed/aligned/sympathetic/etc) was just too long. Went for the simplest.

Yeah agreed I don't think we need the comm

[–] JohannaChittarra@hexbear.net 64 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Yeah I’m not a fan. Also really don’t enjoy that the comm has a similar name to our serious comm anti cishet aktion. Though to be fair, I don’t know the lore on why it’s called that.

[–] Kaplya@hexbear.net 64 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Reactionary comms, ironic or not, should not even be allowed in the first place.

We’re getting this shit instead of the ussr comm someone was asking the other day?

[–] charly4994@hexbear.net 59 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I feel like it's just a step in the wrong direction, the fake news comm I suppose someone can find amusing, though I blocked it pretty much immediately, while this just seems like you'll just invite the wrong crowd. You see it mentioned all the time that the "ironic" racism of 4chan invited in the non-ironic racism (it was all racism) and this could just as easily invite non-ironic anti-union people or just pain the entire site as anti-union.

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 33 points 11 months ago

R/The_Donald was ironic for approximately 6 hours before it became the largest trump forum on the internet 48 hours later

Because pretending to believe stupid shit is just going to make people who unironically agree with that stupid shit think they've found a home.

And then you being ironic doesn't really matter when the 30 people who genuinely believe it drown out everything you have to say.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 58 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think the fakenews comm is enough for irony joke comms, and it's much funnier bait that's easier to understand as a joke.

[–] JohnBrownNote@hexbear.net 40 points 11 months ago (4 children)

nah we should close that too. and the taylor swift one.

Between the AI shilling i saw a couple days ago and an "ironic" anti Union comm, I'm honestly beginning to see where the fake leftist accusations are coming from.

It would be one thing to have a comm dedicated to collecting and booing at anti-union news/actions, but making up fake anti-union stuff is called Reddit.

[–] BidensGranddaughter@hexbear.net 50 points 11 months ago

Hexbear users when someone says "FUCK UNIONS..." jesse-wtf horror

Hexbear users when the sentence ends with "(ironically)" soypoint-2 data-laughing

There, I have covered every possible joke you could make up for this comm, it's no longer needed smuglord

[–] TraumaDumpling@hexbear.net 46 points 11 months ago (4 children)

we all need to understand that satire is dead. any stupid opinion you can come up with in an attempt to paint a person or political tendency as irrational or malicious or ignorant or otherwise 'un-good', is a genuine article of true faith for millions of people on the planet who will kill and die for that belief. the stupidest thing you could think to say is some political party or PAC's official platform. 'ironic' anti-union propaganda reads IDENTICALLY to 'unironic' anti-union propaganda, because anti-union propaganda really is that stupid.

I think we should close anti-union-aktion after a week and then open up fakenews. It's lame that we have a comm that's just a satire blog for a pair of moderators.

[–] Crucible@hexbear.net 43 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Damn, I thought the Taylor Swift one was a garbage idea but this really takes the cake for brainworm posting

[–] ChestRockwell@hexbear.net 25 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (3 children)

I feel like the taylor one is fine, we should claim her as a communist icon if only to do some counter-programming to the weird freaks who look at her as a white supremacist icon.

taylor-commie

[–] Crucible@hexbear.net 43 points 11 months ago

How about we just support people who are actual leftists and not roleplay about some capitalist celebrity who doesn't care about workers, bigotry, or the environment?

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 29 points 11 months ago

It was a good idea to make a comm where we make leftist Taylor Swift memes and things, but if it's not being done... Then it's just a plain old Taylor Swift comm.

It took me great effort to figure out how to actively block a comm when the fake news comm happened. I'm thinking I might need to do it for the anti union one too. I love some good ironic posting but it's only fun in moderation.

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 38 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of fakenews and blocked it myself. This is just anti-left propaganda.

[–] the_post_of_tom_joad@hexbear.net 31 points 11 months ago

So validating to hear others blocking fake news. I hated it. I mean, it was exactly what it said on the tin, news that is fake, but i prefer my fake news to be funny or make a point, not just fake as in trolling.

[–] hexthismess@hexbear.net 39 points 11 months ago

It took me by surprise seeing anti-union posts. Even if it's satire, how long before some people get irony poisoned?

[–] borlax@hexbear.net 39 points 11 months ago

Was gonna block the community, but would rather we just stop it instead.

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 37 points 11 months ago

Yeah that shit needs to go.

[–] davel@hexbear.net 37 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (3 children)

Should our influence continue to grow, the day will come when the capitalist class will try to COINTELPRO Hexbear, and they may try to use our tolerance for lazy irony as their entry point for poisoning the well with sock puppet accounts.

Getting over my love of irony comedy was the greatest thing I ever did for myself. I still love sarcastic comedy, I still love lots of comedy Hexbear probably wouldn't like, that's fine and is what it is. I'll probably change over the years. But developing my entire personality around irony as I did as a teen was more damaging than any traumatic event I lived through. It's the act of separating your sense of self from the words coming out of your mouth. It can be funny at the right times, but developing your sense of self around being non-genuine is a great way to prepare yourself for being a fascist.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 34 points 11 months ago

Second'd'd'd

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 34 points 11 months ago (2 children)

What if we had a reactionary comm but actually we just posted posts about why ironic reactionary comms are bad, but it was a bit, and we were actually making a clever commentary about how satire can be counter-productive when it goes beyond it's intended audience, and for no clear reason it was all formated in iambic pentameter?

The brain worms must go

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 31 points 11 months ago

What'd y'all do? I was only asleep for eight hours! Ish!

[–] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 30 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I immediately blocked that anti-union group. Like, wtf.

Better comm ideas I've been sending the tormentor cabal that runs the site but have been turned down:

  • Crying comm, posts for when you're sad
  • Japanimation comm, no, it's not the same as anime. If you partook in the artform you'd understand this.
  • Soda comm, post about our favourite sodas, especially Moxie
  • NEET comm, post against the wagie scourge
  • Wagie comm, post against the NEET scourge
  • Extremedating comm, dating but this time extreme
  • Morkborg comm,

Sent last night, haven't heard back from yet:

  • NonMod comm, comm for only non-mods on the site

I have a good feeling about this one.

Brb creating a comm called "fascism" where I ironically write fascist screeds from the perspective of a character I'm playing who is a fascist, everyone join in my super funny joke!

[–] dead@hexbear.net 24 points 11 months ago (5 children)

This is a personal anecdote. I didn't save any evidence. You can believe me or not. I don't care.

I used to idle in the hexbear cytube instance (hextube) quite a bit. Melina started doing that as well. We have chatted many times. We haven't always been on good terms but I'm over that.

I will say a compliment about Melina. I think Melina is a funny person. I've laughed at the fakenews comm. It is a funny comm.

Melina has said anti-union things to me in the past. It was maybe like 5 or 6 months ago in the hextube chat. There might have been 1 or 2 other users in the chat. Melina would sometimes got to the hextube chat and tell me about their job. I'm not posting any identifying details. Melina told me that they don't like the union workers at their job, that one of the union workers give them an attitude or something. I told Melina to join a union.

It's very weird to me that someone who has previously said antiunion things to me is now allowed to run their own antiunion comm. It's not funny. It's not a good joke. It doesn't seem like a joke at all. It seems like veiled beliefs.

Melina has also been banned from hexbear before or at least that is what Melina told me. I don't know why they're allowed to be a mod at all. I thought them being mod of fakenews was okay because it was funny and it was a containment board, it stopped Melina from posting fake info on other comms.
