This is very different from the old sky writing. Is there a giant computer controlled bar that releases the smoke at the right time?

[-] zouden@lemmy.world 41 points 1 year ago

It's called skytyping. It's more expensive than regular skywriting because it needs 5 planes but it's easier to read.

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago

Still cheaper than a smoking daisy wheel.

[-] ensignrolaren@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

You seem knowledgeable about this stuff… where can you go in the United States to see actual skywriting? I’ve never seen it, but I’ve always lived the middle of nowhere.

[-] galloog1@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Frequently at popular beaches.

[-] Cyyy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

i expected it to be like a long bar with exits you can open and close by computer and that way you could then control it.. isn't 5 planes a bit complicated?

[-] zouden@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I thought so too but googling for it confirms they use 5 planes.

First company to do it with a single plane towing a long bar will be able to undercut the competition.

Or, unmanned drones.

[-] kautau@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago

It’s just snoop dogg breathing out at regular intervals

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

It uses multiple aligned planes (or perhaps drones at this point?) and yes, it is all computer-controlled.

[-] ProvableGecko@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

It's like a dot matrix printer for the sky

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

That's exactly what it is.

[-] A2PKXG@feddit.de 51 points 1 year ago

i don't want to be THAT guy, but the companies that operate these planes have done silly things like this in the past, because we will talk about it, and someone will then book it for his birthday

I prefer to be aware of when I’m being advertised to, so I personally appreciate you for keeping that mindset for us.

[-] DessertStorms@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

I prefer to be aware of when I’m being advertised to

Always. the answer is always. Because even when you're not actively consuming any media, the advertisements (including more subtle things like product placements and viral marketing like this) have already been absorbed and are doing their thing.

Sorry. 😬

[-] Blastasaurus@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago

Hey if it means we get crude words written in the sky, I'm all for this marketing scheme.

[-] masterspace@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

That sounds like a win-win. I'm generally vehemently anti-advertising, but I'm willing to make an exception for skywriting cause it's rad.

[-] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Nothing wrong with that guy. Awareness is a good tool for everyone to have.

Pointing out what it is doesn't necessarily carry judgment with it, it's just facts, and you can use them however you like.

[-] 3TH4Li4@feddit.ch 20 points 1 year ago

Stuff like this makes my day bearable

[-] EatMyDick@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

A millionaire spending fuck you money to sky type deez nuts? Weird.

"Hey man, you see deez nutz in the sky yesterday?"

[-] Nusm@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"Hey man, did you see that in the sky yesterday?"

"What?"

"Deez nutz."

[-] yum13241@lemm.ee 13 points 1 year ago

How about FUCK U/SPEZ instead? That'd be hilarious.

[-] smellythief@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

More likely, one person spent time and effort, and someone else spent money.

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 10 points 1 year ago

I like how the smoke is just a bunch of little poofs. It makes me imagine the pilot pretended to fart and giggle every time.

Something just needs to be expressed.

[-] negativeyoda@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

~~Someone~~

A hero. The words you meant to use are "A hero"

100% worth it

[-] Nusm@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Some things just need to be said.

[-] PatFussy@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Can you imagine how many people got GOT that day. Next they will be writting "no u" and half the male population will cum in their pants intuitively

[-] TesterJ@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Considering this is over Los Angeles, a LOT of people got got lol

[-] yoz@aussie.zone 7 points 1 year ago

You're underestimating the number of people with money and lots of time in their hand. There are people who dont have to do 9-5 to pay rent or mortgage. They were born with fuck you money.

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

When did skywriting go from analog to digital?

[-] jacktherippah@lemdro.id 5 points 1 year ago

How does one do this? Asking for a friend.

[-] quazar@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

oh its 5 planes? I thought this was some kind of laser that somehow activated the sky's icecrystals like .... sigh .... "chem"trails. (they are not 'chem' trails, they are atmospheric disturbances caused by planes)

couldn't drones do this?

[-] Decoy321@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Most of them are 5 planes. But you could do this with one plane "printing" out 5 rows of clouds. It could be a drone printing them out very close, or a manned plane further away.

It could also be photoshop.

[-] Grater@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

can prob have a bunch of drones to do it but the visibility could be a problem

works best in night sky i think

@TesterJ This is fantastic!

[-] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

It's all downhill from here Humanity
