Never forget what was taken from you.

This is a Soviet self-propelled atomic power station. In the format of a tracked heavy truck. From the 1960's.

[–] CannotSleep420@lemmygrad.ml 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's really cool, but how often do you need to move a power station?

[–] GrainEater@lemmygrad.ml 24 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think the point is to be able to construct it in an industrial facility and then move it to a remote area where it can provide energy for both industrial and civilian use

[–] knfrmity@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 1 year ago

I want one.

That’s pretty cool. I was looking into nuclear powered cars, and the issue was with miniaturization. Tons of aerospace and defence companies are making something similar currently.

FYI, the Soviet union’s space program cost a tenth of the US’s

[–] GrainEater@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Did this really work? I didn't realize it was possible to safely perform nuclear fission in such a (relatively) tiny space

[–] Shrike502@lemmygrad.ml 26 points 1 year ago (4 children)

It did work. The technology was lost alongside the USSR (yes, it is possible to lose technology). Rosatom is currently fiddling with floating reactors, in the format of a cargo boat

[–] GrainEater@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 year ago

that's amazing and tragic

[–] ronweasleysl@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Can you share some sources for this? This sounds both amazing and extremely tragic.

Someone else posted an authoritative looking PDF that says that the technical plans for the thing were declassified a few years ago. I don't see any basis for describing the tech as lost, actually kinda concerning nobody else called that claim out.

Like don't get me wrong I share the sense of grief for lost potential (esp wrt space exploration) but let's stick to reality

If u read the link it says the whole plant takes up 4 separate platforms like the one in the picture. So not that tiny.

[–] FlightSimEnjoyer@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This would be great to power small villages and outposts in Siberia.

Perks of working at the Union is that I apparently get to watch the documentaries they make as they launch. In a few weeks I will watch a documentary about Colombian syndicalism and violence against activists. I will see if I can link the doc to here somehow.

I like how Republicans completely stopped giving a shit about Hawaii once they found out that it's a blue state. I guess outrage over poor responses are only for other people in the tribe.

I went out drinking with my friends a few nights ago and some of them said Meloni was based 💀

[–] GrainEater@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

maybe they were just mispronouncing the fruit

[–] CannotSleep420@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I wish that was the case. It was in the context of Italy's government, and other governments. Apparently Marine LePen is too extreme, and Macron is too left wing, but Meloni is just right.

[–] Shrike502@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What kind of world is your friend living in where Macron is "too left wing"?

[–] CannotSleep420@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They live in a predominantly white upper middle class suburb outside of a major city.

They have muh “socialist” healthcare and a couple vacation days. AOC’s always praising them, must be radically leftist.

Frans Timmermans, EU figurehead, has decided to lead the Dutch left Green/Labour coalition in order to get Dutch left back on track.

He has already announced that he wants a mandatory 2% NATO budget... So far for Dutch left, I guess.

So a Russian moon probe crashed and two days later, India lands a rover.

I hate it here, comrades. It hurts to know what we have been and never will be again

I am so unbelievably sick of reading about Saudi Arabia in regards to European football and the wildly eurocentric and xenophobic “enlightened thinkpieces” that there have been a true glut of recently.

Modern KSA is obviously not an ideal setup, but good lord nothing gets Englishmen foaming at the mouth like a brown person having more money than them. It’s not an issue at all if Americans buy up the league and spend a billion pounds in a year on players, but as soon as it’s an Arab or Chinese it is just a bridge too far for them.

Football is my cognitive dissonance zone, the top level game just cannot be enjoyed if you don’t approach it with a healthy level of dissonance. The corruption and exploitation is rampant all across the sport, please just let me ignore it in peace lol. Can’t even go to r/soccer for news now without getting myself wound up.

I just hate all billionaire owned clubs. Fan owned clubs ftw.

Upcoming fanfic stuff:

Duncan's duel with Peko (must read!),

Celeste does some spy shit (wild!)

(UDT)Ibuki sings "It's a Good Day to Die" for a room full of Reserves(woah, that's insane!)

[–] ronweasleysl@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I want to read/listen to some theory. The only stuff I've read is 'Principles of Communism', 'Wage Labour and Capital', 'Value, Price and Profit' and I'm halfway through 'The State and Revolution'. What else would you recommend I read?

[–] trashxeos@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In this order: Imperialism (Lenin), Wretched of the Earth (Fanon), Neo-colonialism (Nkruma). If you prefer audiobook with context, all three of those are featured in the Marx Madness podcast as well and all are great reads.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

Seconding listening to Marx Madness even if you are going to read the stuff yourself, especially if you don't have a reading group of your own. They were the inspiration for the book club in the r/TheDeprogram server and we have now read over 16 different books (not counting the fact we read Blackshirts and Reds twice!)

[–] QueerCommie@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 year ago

I would recommend On Practice and On contradiction by Mao.
