There are things that are cool if they are voluntary but not cool when forced.

[-] RageAgainstTheRich@lemmy.world 61 points 4 months ago

People in china make things with love too. Electronics, games, movies, shows, comedy, art, software etc.

Fuck the government but the hate for the people in china is disgusting. I do get it. I do. The government is absolutely fucked and very oppressive.

But i feel like a lot of people don't see that a TON of american and european products are made in china too. And think "oh i don't buy a chinese phone! Its made by abused workers!".

And then buy an iPhone. Completely forgetting that phone is made in the same factory but with an american logo on it.

We need to be more focused. We can't let people forget that the government and the people are not the same.

I know people say the "chinese" or the "russians" or the "americans". But we should say the government instead when talking about political conflicts. A lot of people read the "chinese" or the "americans" and see it as that ENTIRE country. People, government etc. As if it is all one singular thing.

Its just sad and wrong to see them as one and the same.

Chinese plants will make whatever the hell you need them to at your desired quality, as long as you meet the market price.

There’s an incredible irony in Americans associating them with poor quality because the American capitalists ordering the goods decided to cheap out and cut corners lmao.

[-] RageAgainstTheRich@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Ex-fucking-actly.

[-] Titou@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

It's hilarious to see people hating on china because of the governement while their own governement probably do worse, and history proved that occident is capable of worse

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 36 points 4 months ago

This is mostly true for nationalistic American liberals. China is the opposing empire to America, while many see Japan as this "country uplifted by America." This attitude isn't new and isn't consciously held by most people that parrot it. Most don't know any better and many would accept the nuances if presented respectfully.

Empires occasionally do good when it serves their interests, while every country has serious issues they need to deal with. You can still oppose authoritarians or be a weeb without needing to ignore reality.

Or maybe because China is an authoritarian hell where there's no political freedom? idk

[-] arymandias@feddit.de 21 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Unlike America where you get to choose between: genocide in Gaza and uhm… also genocide in Gaza.

The way Chinese elite keep themselves in power is different from the way American elites keep them selves in power, but in the end what does it matter to you. Or do you want America to bring democracy to China at the end of a riffle, or be racist against Chinese people and Culture because you don’t agree with their government?

Edit: for the people (purposely?) misreading my comment, nowhere do I excuse the actions of China. I just want to point out that this rhetoric of condemning the human rights abuses of geo-strategic rivals is a known strategy that has a body count counted in millions. And pointing at Gaza is not a whataboutism, it is to show that Americas deep care for the Uyghurs or Taiwan independence is purely about cynical power.

[-] OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 24 points 4 months ago

America's authoritarianism doesn't make China's authoritarianism any better. They can both be shitty, buckaroo.

[-] jumjummy@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago

Playing that one note song again. Care so much about genocide? Look directly within China’s own borders if you want to see one.

[-] Sop@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

China’s treatment of Uyghurs is nowhere comparable to what the US and Israel are doing to Palestinians. And assuming that you live in the US, one of these crimes is committed under your name, the other is not.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 10 points 4 months ago

China isn't forcibly relocating Muslims they find inconvenient, stealing their land, and eradicating their culture while calling it reeducation or anti-extremism?

[-] Sop@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 months ago

China isn’t bombing civilians indiscriminately or using famine as a means of waging war.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 4 points 4 months ago

So the severity of the fascism is more important than the quantity in your mind? Is there a published scale somewhere that you use?

[-] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 14 points 4 months ago

Their point still stands

[-] RageAgainstTheRich@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

And that is true. But some people in china making something and putting their hearts in it, does not mean it should be hated on because their government is evil. We shouldn't see the government and the people of a country as a singular thing.

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Ffs, of course it is! The wins they do have were all done for self-serving reasons. They occasionally stumble onto the right side of international conflicts, just like America. They sometimes enact effective policies that America doesn't, but they often cause pain and death that no one can complain about. It's an authoritarian empire; of course it's awful!

[-] Redex68@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

I mean, this image is basically applicable to the entire west? Though the first part might be more weebs.

[-] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

It's biggest in America, as we're more involved in the Pacific. Other western countries side with us, but are less directly invested and gung-ho. The rest of the west is less likely to directly fight China or defend Japan.

It was the old image of Chinese products (edit: also services), but recently their quality has increased significantly. On top of that, the price is much lower than alternatives.

[-] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 65 points 4 months ago

It's mostly the surveillance state

[-] BenchpressMuyDebil@szmer.info 31 points 4 months ago

⚠️ You have alerted the horde

[-] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 16 points 4 months ago

When people saw the price, they stopped caring about that. This has been the case of Hong Kong.

[-] Zirconium@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

price makes no fucking difference whether or not it comes from a sweatshop. especially fucking clothes

[-] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Sweatshop is probably true, but I'm telling you, you just cannot resist the price as a consumer. Tooth filling for 29 HKD (3.7 USD), you just can't beat that.

Hongkonger are extremely realistic and practical. Price low? Use it

[-] problematicPanther@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I thought it was about the dogs painted to look like tigers in the zoo, for example.

[-] VelvetStorm@lemmy.world 46 points 4 months ago

Yes but i would rather not support the ccp.

[-] naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 4 months ago

do you have concerns about buying American stuff? I mean the usa just got outed running an antivax campaign to kill Asian people while hoarding vaccines.

States aren't your friend yo

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Yes. I hate consumerism and our corporate overlords. I hate any World Super Power(tm), real or imaginary.

It's a team sport, but we're all the disposable pawns.

[-] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago
[-] VelvetStorm@lemmy.world 20 points 4 months ago

So you support the ccp and their oppression of the Chinese population?

[-] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

Chinese are humans too. They have a life, have things to pay for, and most of them are not even associated with the government.

[-] VelvetStorm@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Then don't buy things that are owned by the ccp. I'm not against them. I'm against their government, and unfortunately, we can't do anything about the ccp except not buy as much as possible from China.

[-] OrnateLuna@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

Tell that to all the major Industries that are buying and producing stuff in china than just a regular bloke

[-] VelvetStorm@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Just because they are shitty doesn't mean I have to be too.

[-] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Yes, the Chinese are people too, and they are being oppressed by their government.

What's your point?

[-] gmtom@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

This but unironically.

In China and Japan, traditionally they write top to bottom... Doubt this is a translated post though

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Me, a fan of kung fu movies and Chinese food: China has good thing too 🥹

The cities, the culture, and the people are pretty cool. The government is what sucks. But, like... That's true of damn near every country.
