Taiga became popular in 2022. Definitely looking forward to seeing that one around. So many Ice Queen jokes.

Sierra is not an uncommon name, River as well. Probably more.

In Spanish, Selva (rainforest) is a somewhat common girl's name

What are you doing steppe nomad?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 7 points 21 hours ago

Using flat terrain to facilitate fast movement and colonization. I sure hope no one invents a way to kill me while I descend on your village

[–] steel_nomad@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

And even then, only to a female! Certainly not a male name.

Taiga's a Japanese name, though uncommon

For 2023, the number of births with name River is 3084, which represents 0.168 percent of total male births in 2023.

Tundra is not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth beginning with 2020. Please enter another name.

Was looking them up at https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi but now "This website is temporarily unavailable," did everyone have the same idea and it's only resourced for 1qps?

🎶 One of these things is not like the others 🎶

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 13 points 1 day ago

I guess cause when the name was made, a good place for a battle was a big ole field. (Speculation)

Well, Tundra is already in use. Forest is more common than you know. Arid would work if it didn't mean what it does.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 14 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Not biomes but ...

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname tho.

South wetlands is reserved only for the exceptionally hot individuals.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname

Is it though?

[–] nailbar@sopuli.xyz 6 points 13 hours ago

Accepted by half of the two individuals involved

[–] SacredHeartAttack@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I know a kid named River 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I do as well. She's a real badass too

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And she can kill you with her brain.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We're possibly talking about different people, unless the River I know has latent superpowers that I'm unaware of.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 15 points 1 day ago

I'm thinking of River Tam, from Firefly.

Whether she can or can't do that is still debatable, but she did tell Jayne she could. And she can read minds, so it's not entirely out of the question...

Xeric Shrubland is definitely a LOTR character.

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Xeric as a name actually sounds kinda badass

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 18 points 1 day ago

If I ever see it as a name I'm just going to assume it's someone who was named Eric by his parents and had it changed to be edgier when he was fourteen

[–] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 13 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

Tangent but.. Wow it didn’t even occur to me that paludariums were so named because that’s the type of ecosystem they are mimicking, rather than some guy named Paul invented a cool-style terrarium/aquarium merger.. (example below)

TIL!

Theorycrafting this - Tundra would be a nice name. So would Mesa, Fen, and Delta.

Sitting behind these hairdos in class and at the theater definitely sucked back in the 80's.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

I still don't know how open flames for cigarettes and big hair co-existed.

Xeric sounds kind of like a cool name to give a kid if you want that kid to suffer for their entire life.

But then again they could rise above it and become a cool person, maybe not quite on the level of Streetlamp leMoose but close.
