The impression I've gotten from others is that while he does suck, he stopped his country from getting the full brunt of neoliberal shock therapy. The Western powers hate him for that alone. The man has a knack for realpolitik, which came in handy when the hotdog dude from Wagner visited.

An autocrat who manages to stay in power by swinging back and forth btw the west and Russia (got put to his place eventually) and by doing the populist thing of not completely slashing the welfare state. Not too different from Hungary tbh

“The Jews managed to force the world to remember the Holocaust,” Lukashenko declared. “The entire world grovels before them and gives in to them. They are afraid to say a single word out of place.”

“The history of Germany is a copy of the history of Belarus. Germany was raised from ruins thanks to firm authority and not everything connected with that well-known figure Hitler was bad. German order evolved over the centuries and attained its peak under Hitler. This corresponds with our understanding of a presidential republic and the role of a president in it,” Lukashenko said in 1995, perhaps anticipating that he would still be in power more than a quarter of century later.

he's the enemy of my enemy I guess and I love my enemy having a thorn in its side but you absolutely do not have to hand it to him

Well, Belarus is north of the 50° parallel latitude line, still pretty good for growing melons at the equivalent of Newfoundland
