I'm not the biggest fan of Hexbear lately, and it's no one person or anyone specific, but I feel bad because I find that it's difficult to get sources or find sources of information to post here that isn't already shared or has a niche role filled by someone else that's already here. Even though I've had a rough experience or two on here, I've found that the company here is much preferable in comparison to the non-stop never-ending drama on Hexbear as of recent. It really feels like Leftbook in there recently.

Regardless, I'll probably keep posting my occasional meme and browsing the news thread where I'll have to hear some slam out blazing takes of how China is failing global socialism from their D.I.Y raccoon sanctuary that is actual true leftism.

I've recently been writing something myself on a perspective of the Catholic Church in America while also doing some writing and map-making for a fallout tabletop I'm doing for a big group. Resources I may not know of that some of you may have tucked in your back pocket would be neat.

Other than that, I hope you are all doing well and a happy new years eve for all of you!

The issues on hexbear from a month and a half ago were never resolved and the issues have metastasized. There have been waves of bans and many longtime users have given up fighting. (I'm one of them) There are one or more admins who are actively hostile to the userbase and are attempting to reshape the user base by banning people and silencing certain discussions. They decided to Luigi is a fascist and even trying to discuss otherwise gets you banned. (yes he liked and shared many really reactionary posts but he was not a fascist, just an ignoramus)

Honestly I feel like the feds got an admin account and put an expert wrecker on the operation. The way admin accounts are anonymized its impossible to know who is making the decisions over there and it seems quite obvious that some of them are trying (and succeeding) to destroy the site.

Sorry if this comes off as weird and putting the mod drama aside but I was hadn't seen you posting in the HB general mega and was wondering if you were okay so searched up your u/n. Glad to see you're on the grad, I should work out how to browse here more often, or make my own profile<3

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 month ago

I'm good. Been spending less time online since leaving Hexbear which is probably a good thing.

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 month ago

I've had the same exact thoughts. Classic wrecker shit.

[–] CarlMarks@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Glad you're here! If it's not bad for infosec (associated with your name/place/specific experiences) I'd be interested in reading your perspective whenever it's ready.

hexbear always kinda felt that way. that said, lemmygrad is totally fine and everyone is very friendly

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I wouldn't say that, I've had a few people say some weird shit and hide behind the disengage rule I've met but ironically two out of three of them were from Hexbear. Weirdly enough, when I first joined it didn't feel like there was a struggle session every week. It feels like the last row of struggles about the admins really jaded me about the site I guess.

Lemmygrad is great though, I do enjoy the people here.

Not sure I understand that rule generally, there is no back and forth if you stop replying

My phone was in airplane mode so I don't have GPS exif data, but it's somewhere between Uttar Pradesh, India and Eastern Pakistan.

I finally have a working computer. Now I can return to making high-quality articles on modern history.

I can't stop thinking about how one of the most desintegrating aspects of capitalist hegemony is how non-commodified alternatives to social practices/services (for example, internet forums) are always going to be decentralised, to the point where decentralisation itself is taken to be a good thing and communities build their collective identity around those alternatives. I believe that if those alternatives were possible in a centralised manner they'd be much better, specially for the non-"power users".

Fediverse is just a recent example of this, but informatics in specific (due to the global reach of the internet and neglible replication cost for software) is rife with the most extreme examples of this. Dozens of Linux distributions against Windows, self-hosted search engines against Google, the text editor wars itself that sadly resolved into VSCode dominance some decades later.

And when something becomes the "hegemon" of the alternatives, like Ubuntu or Firefox, the economic logic of society dictates that they either get swallowed (redhat) or have to commodify themselves, and the cycle repeats itself.

In capitalism the only passive consolidating force is capital, and so everything else must be diffuse and divided.

I could try to turn this into a proper thesis but even in that I'd run against the current issue that search engines don't work anymore and it's much harder to intentionally browse the critical sections of the internet and I don't have the time and energy for that. I'm just tired of having to wade through a dozen possibly zombie projects every time I'm looking for an alternative to shit like Trello as if the concept of "online shared Kanban board" needs that much variety.

So I guess I'll just leave this here as a pseudotweet. The current state of the internet is depressing, but at least I'm glad I found lemmygrad.

After the revolution there will be only 1 social media and it will be beautiful because the hate posters will be sent to gulags for reeducation.

There's Been a lot of Salafist Shit On my 𝕏 FYP Since Assad Was Ousted, So annoying Man Seeing these People here celebrating Assad's Downfall, while Israel and Turkey is Gobbling Syria Up RN

[–] aaaaaaadjsf@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Israel literally sent spec ops commandos into Syria to blow up all the missile/military production facilities located deep inside the mountains, that Israeli fighter aircraft could not bomb while the Assad government fell and HTS took over. And Israel did a whole propaganda mini documentary on it, while HTS completely ignored the Israeli incursions! What a disaster for the state security of Syria, those were Syrian military facilities, they belonged to the people of Syria, not just Assad. Now it's all gone, the new HTS government did nothing to defend them and just let Israel destroy it all. I think annoying is an understatement. And yeah the propaganda push is everywhere.

These people are fucking stupid...

Happy new year.

Celebrated in Belgium for a change. In The Netherlands it's always a war zone with fireworks the entire day. Remember a year in which guys in my street blew up a playground and shattered every window in a hundred meters radius. Yesterday a kid even died.

In Antwerp it was 1 show at Midnight. That was it. Maybe a single explosion somewhere far away once an hour. The difference for a group of Dutch people was wild lol.

New user here (I think some might recognise the name), hope you all enjoy new years eve and the new year, if you celebrate it.

[–] ComradePupIvy@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Over here we celebrate a far more important holiday on January 1st Cuban Día de la Liberación

[–] CarlMarks@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 month ago
[–] aaaaaaadjsf@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 month ago

Yes that's a much more important holiday. Batista fled Cuba on that day if I'm correct?

~~Happy New Year to my favourite federated instance! We are aware of the Hexbear outage and will notify here when we are back up. If the recent FOIA request on hexbear and the bags of flour in Gaza with hexbear on them caused an alphabet agency or mossad to take down hexbear it was an honour posting with you~~

Hexbear is back

Wake up. Open curtains. Grey. Rain. Another day in Belgium

2024 was one of the wettest and darkest days since the start of measuring over here. And it truly felt like that. Just endless days of rain and grey clouds with no sun in sight.
