Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

On this day in 1959, U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country following the victory of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) at the Battle of Santa Clara, marking the successful conclusion of the Cuban Revolution.

The 26th of July Movement takes its name from the date of with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, however, the movement bearing this name was not formally organized until the attackers were released from prison in 1955. Public resistance continued sporadically until November 1956, when 80 members of the M-26-7 returned from exile.

Soon after landing on the island, a separate revolutionary group, the "Directorio Revoluncionari Estudiantil" (DRE), unsuccessfully attempted an attack on the Presidential Palace in Havana.

Throughout 1957, armed resistance from groups such as the DRE and M-26-7 would escalate. After a failed offensive by the government against rebels in the summer of 1958, the rebels launched a major counter-offensive.

On December 28th, 1958, after a fraudulent election in favor of Batista, revolutionary forces reached the city of Santa Clara. Seizing equipment from an armored train intended to transport government reinforcements, the rebels quickly captured the city, prompting Batista to panic and flee to the Dominican Republic with a personal fortune of more than $300 million.

In the following days, revolutionary forces entered Havana with no resistance, and Castro established a provisional government. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist–Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

Batista later settled in fascist Spain, dying there in 1973 at the age of 72.

man why is it so fucking difficult to find real-life friends who share your interests? like there's just too much media to be consumed these days. Like I can find people who are into movies, books or music no problem, but there are so many niches in each of those that it's impossible to find anyone to actually talk to about these things in any kind of depth. Last year I was in a kind of movie club with four other people who are also fairly deep into movies, and I basically had to give up on having any influence on what movies we'd watch because they'd basically always be too "out there" for me to get the majority of them invested in actually watching them. With music its probably easiest because you can just put whatever your talking about on, but even then everyone seems to have their own niche of whatever they listen to, and if you can ever get them to listen to anything it's at most one or two tracks of something. It's probably worst with books, where the investment is just so high. Like sure you'll get someone to go "oh i always meant to read that" but then they have their own list of books to read which is feet long and you'll both die before you ever read the same things.

I guess this is why so many people are so deep into pop culture. If you like harry potter or star wars, you'll always find someone to talk about it at every party, no problem.

Saw a poster on Twitter seemingly genuinely worried that referring to someone as a Philistine was a slur. I dunno man, the Philistines were an Ancient Canaanite people that died out like 2500 years ago. They aren't around to insult anymore. And if you look at its etymology into modern English you could object to it being elitist or classist but it's less of a slur than hillbilly.

Worrying about slights against peoples who died out right at the start of antiquity is actually too woke for me.

The funniest cope my mom does is whenever the treatlers at work are treating her particularly poorly she’ll start watching really harebrained propaganda videos on YouTube about how bad it is in Cuba and Venezuela. Idk if she’s doing it consciously but I’m always like wait are you not seeing that you do this whenever the worst excesses of capitalism are harming you more than usual?

This country is so great if you’re a grifter. I had a fully incompetent coworker who couldn’t even copy and paste from stackexchange successfully. They seem to be failing up to increasingly higher 6 figure jobs. Like the last 2 lines on their resume are FAANG+ companies. Competent engineers can’t find decent work in this economy and this person can’t code or do analytics properly and is job hopping between the tech companies.

They’re super into crypto. Like I’m convinced you can make staff engineer level based on being a tech hype guy and having rancid vibes.

Something I completely forgot about, and thankfully realized on time, are real estate scams. Went to see a small, but nice apartment a couple days ago. I liked it enough that I was about to go ahead with the application process, but I started thinking about it. The agent asked for a really high deposit fee, which is virtually nonrefundable. They had also told me that the fee would be relatively low, but all together it was significantly higher than what I had been told for similar apartments.

So I started looking into the company and they have no online precense and have operated under different names. Even the rental history of the apartment itself was weird. Its supposed to be on a one year lease yet it was relisted several time before a year was up.

All of this plus several negative reviews on a couple sites and now I've cooled on continuing with the process. Freaking sucks because I did like the place, but I'm not about to get scammed. Legit real estate is enough of a scam itself with the wild prices for rentals.

Can I vent here? I am going to vent...I have been involved with a year long fight to get custody of my children that has cost me literally every penny I have had saved while the other side has basically infinite money...

and, some days, it is hard to get over the fact that you are not meant to interact with the American legal system unless you are wealthy. It hurts so bad that everything that you need to actually get a judge to listen to you costs untold thousands of dollars...and then there is more money on top of that just to get that evidence in court. And I just found out that this report that I paid a ton of money for (which has put me right back to asking for help in mutual aid) contains falsified information of things I never did or never said...but it is now a legal document, and if I want to fight that it will be thousands more dollars to even create a shred of reasonable doubt of the words of this expert.

The bit take away here is, if you are not wealthly, never, under any circumstance, engage with the legal system.

This “gotcha” against claims that H1B maybe exploitative kinda ignores that we’re talking about high skill jobs in very high COL areas. Like a lot of these are for software engineers in Silicon Valley and NYC, of course the median is high. The minimum wage you can petition for an H1B in that field in those areas is low 6 figures, lol. If anything this is showing that companies are generally paying towards the mandated legal minimum for H1Bs.

Working hard to work myself up to finally get started on my next game. It's going to be a kind of single-player roguelite survival game where you can play as a series of unlockable alien creatures who explore a world covered in ancient ruins, unlocking the mysteries that led to the creation of said ruins as well as the subjugation and exploitation of the life which exists on the planet that you're playing in.

Gonna call it "Kill All Rich People"

A lot of rural America seems very charming to me. I would really like to live in an area where there is massive wilderness of mountains and forests and lakes, where you can really get lost in woods. I would like to have a slow-paced lifestyle where I work a straightforward job and see my friends in the evenings for a beer and a bareque. I would love to go hiking and camping in those massive national parks and just hang out there naked for as long as I could.

Unfortunately it all comes with the very massive downside of being in the USA, and I would have to live around Americans. Oh well, it's nice to romanticise at least.
