Public lie, spread by a public figure, with an intention to mislead the public, should be a criminal offence.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Even if it was, presidents are now immune from criminal charges, and he is set to begin his next term in just a couple weeks, so not likely that anything could stop him from continuing to do this without sweeping reform of the office of president.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You just have to think Republicans in Congress would much rather have a president JD Vance. Most of them hate Trump with a passion

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Now they have prez Elon to deal with who's threatening them financially.

[–] protist@mander.xyz 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

JD Vance is Elon's boy. Elon would totally want him in charge too. Vance has had direct connections to tech billionaires for a long time

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

No, Vance is Thiel’s boy. And Thiel and Musk have hated each others’ guts since the PayPal days.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I low key wonder if they'll use the 25th on him to get that to happen. He's Thiel's boy, and I have wondered if that was the plan from the get go.

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Nope, best I can do is "falsely suggested" and a sense of legitimacy imbued by constant media coverage of his self-serving asshole behavior

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago

Intent is very hard to prove.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Now try proving intent in court.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

That needs to be done in number of offences. Your point is?

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 78 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

"Immigrant" means non-white in MAGA speak.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When they plan to denaturalize people they can make all their noxious dreams come true.

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This guy was born in Texas. He's as American as they are not just not as white.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Then he stands a sliver of a chance!

[–] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Then his chances are even better.

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 44 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Of course he did. He's a cunt.

Is “immigrant” now primarily a racial slur?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

As evidenced by US citizens unwillingness to describe themselves as immigrants, instead using the moniker "expatriate" even though they're immigrating to another country.

Immigrant has always been a racial slur.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I think technically Ex-pat means they intend to go back to their home country, immigrant they intend to stay in the new country.

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

if that’s the case, why are white rich british people retiring in the french countryside called expats, but temporary foreign workers aren't?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Technically that's what I've heard it means. But yes we all know that it's white people that use the term because they don't want to call themselves immigrants.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn't "retiring" in conflict with "worker"?

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

oh, the people retiring and the workers aren't the same people! i'm sorry for the confusion, my wording wasn't clear... 😅

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I see now, that was my mistake! Thank you!

[–] havocpants@lemm.ee 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They are expats to the people in the country they left, and immigrants in the country they went to. I don't know why people think the word expat is some kind of racism-lite.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The term is often used by white people to refer to themselves when they immigrate to a new country. "I'm an expat" they say as they permanently settle into a new country.

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Currently living outside the US expat is primarily used by anyone not brown regardless of how long they're staying

[–] irotsoma@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

To Trump and most of his followers, anyone with a non-Western-European name or isn't Christian is an "immigrant". Doesn't matter if their families have been in the country for a hundred years.

[–] Talaraine@fedia.io 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If we don't keep calling it out as evil it will become standard. Never be silent.

[–] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Americans had a chance in November and shit the bed

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 days ago

People will spread that he was now. A lie always gets more traffic then the truth

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

When % of lies crosses 25% a president should automatically be fired.

If the % of lies crosses 50%, a criminal investigation should be warranted

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Yes, it is news. We’re tired of hearing about his lying but, unlike when he was given a huge platform in 2016, now that he’s holding office we don’t get to ignore it. I’m Canadian but even here the power he is wielding and the way it influences our conservatives means even I have to keep up with this bullshit.

He’s going to lie anyway and there will be people who hear him do it so everyone else needs to know ahead of dealing with those idiots that he’s definitely lying.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 4 points 2 days ago

And yet he wants to open the door to allow more immigrants for his buddy Elon, curious

[–] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Well l to Trump, anyone with a dark complexion and foreign grandparents isn't a citizen
