As the car gets warm, the snow at the bottom melts. Then the idiot parks it to do his groceries or whatever so it cools back down and freezes into a 2 inch thick block of ice. Then they drive on the highway. That block of ice breaks free, flies up in the air, catches in the wind while tumbling which gives it an unpredictable trajectory and smashes the windshield of a car that was unfortunate enough to be further back at that time.

I know because it happened to me. Had to get a windshield replaced in the middle of a road trip. The dipshit who caused it didn't even realize what happened and kept driving. The police should absolutely crack down on this instead of all the other petty bullshit they tend to harass people over.

The police should absolutely crack down on this...

They do, in some communities, fwiw. I've gotten a warning contingent that I remove the snow RIGHT NOW.

Don't want to doxx myself, so I'll just say "in the northeast US."

[–] DerArzt@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

You mean one of the same parts of the country.

I was just looking for a video to say exactly what you did, people should see it happen in real time:

https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=ZA8HB6ZpVRY

(This is invidious, a yt proxy, if you don't recognize the URL. Content (no audio): A car's dashcam captures an incident where a seemingly small bit of ice comes loose from a car ahead of the driver and destroys the windshield. It's hard to notice if you aren't looking out for it, bit of a jumpscare.)

That shit can get you a nasty ticket in Canada. They know how dangerous it is

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It can get you a nasty ticket just about anywhere, but the cops have to enforce traffic law for that to happen

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Idk I had several people warning me about that when I lived in Quebec, and I very rarely saw people driving with snow on their roof, so I assumed it was enforced quite seriously

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I live in a place where it is illegal and can get you a ticket but the cops never pull anyone over for it so a lot of people don't bother. Every winter /r/Connecticut is about 25% pictures of people with piles of snow like this on top of their suvs

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 4 points 2 months ago

Had similar things happen too. It's why I hate driving. Some moron doesn't even realize how amazingly selfish and idiotic they are being, and come this close to killing someone, meanwhile they just keep driving like nothing happened

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Just the snow blowing off into the windshield of the person behind them is dangerous enough to cause a fatal accident.

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 79 points 2 months ago (4 children)

That’s illegal where I live.

[–] kittehx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 74 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I hope that it's illegal everywhere

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 9 points 2 months ago

It is apparently not illegal in my state.

[–] BoobaAwooga@lemmynsfw.com 17 points 2 months ago

Yeah it’s pretty possible to injure or kill someone if that flies off while driving on a highway

[–] A_A@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes, the license plate covered in snow is illegal. Surprisingly, only you and i noticed it ! /joke

[–] bluewing@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago

Pretty hard to keep your rear plate uncovered when driving in snow conditions. The air currents pack it in there like that as you drive. And it can only take a few mintues of driving to make it happen.

But the roof? Yeah get that cleaned off!

[–] helpImTrappedOnline@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

I bet its illegal where they live too.

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 62 points 2 months ago

One time I left a (much smaller) snow helmet on my car. After a very mild stop at a stoplight, I instantly had a blocked windshield too heavy for the wipers to fix in-situ.

I was able to turn into a small parking lot without risk of hitting anyone/anything and clear it off.

Overall: 2/10, would not recommend.

It can be annoying and difficult, but it’s worth going the extra mile even if it seems like a small amount of snow.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 33 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I have done this exact thing before, and I'm very sorry fellow drivers because I was born on a tropical island and I had never seen snow before. I truly thought nothing of it and just drove the car so long as I could see out the front.

[–] Zron@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Could you see out of the back?

So many Florida plates here in Chicago that dive around with the whole back and side windows covered in snow. We’ll, not this year because of climate change, but last year was terrible.

Pro tip: if you can’t see out of the car, don’t drive it.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Pro tip: if you can’t see out of the car, don’t drive it.

It hardly makes a difference, it's not like they actually look even when they can see

[–] bluewing@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

It's not like ANYONE driving in Chicago looks where they are going. Ever.

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

o/ im a Floridian in HS who went through the whole process a few years ago. Snow was hardly ever mentioned on the learners permit test and wasnt even a concept when taking the actual driver's license 'drive around test' which is probably why nobody from here knows what to do. Genuinely my 11 year old brother could pass it in a week if I thought him. Floridians are also bad drivers anyways so that also compounds lol
It's weird driving on your own for literally 2 years and being a safer driver than people in their 40s who have infinitly more voting power than you.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 4 points 2 months ago

Yes. At least that part had a defroster.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 10 points 2 months ago

At least you have an excuse. So long as you learned for your second winter.

Too many people are just fucking lazy.

[–] Free_Opinions@feddit.uk 21 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Few times I've gotten to witness when someone brakes onto traffic lights and the uncleared snow from the roof slides onto their windshield and is too much for the wipers to handle.

I drive a truck myself and since the roof is a bit difficult to reach I got a brush with a telescopic handle and a rotating head that I can flip 90 degrees and use to push the snow down from the roof. Works great.

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Those extendo handle ones are so great. Spend the extra $10 and get a good one. My work truck is over 7' tall, but I liked it so much I got one for my car and another for my wife's car.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 3 points 2 months ago

SnoBroom/SnoJoe. They're about $10, maybe $15 today.

Hell, I only had that shitty 2' brush thing when I started driving, in a place where there was as much ice as snow, and I still cleared off my car.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not surprised that the picture was taken at a pump, that's going to be killer on the gas mileage

[–] Num10ck@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

at about 15 pounds per cubic foot, thats what maybe 400 pounds of snow?

[–] Stez827@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 months ago

And another like foot or 2 of drag

[–] dogsoahC@lemm.ee 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's not how physics works, but I appreciate the thought.

Even if it wasn't super dangerous, I wouldn't be able to drive like this. It's like a giant sign that doesn't just say that you're lazy, but selfish.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

It's the best part of winter if we're honest with ourselves.

[–] hinterlufer@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No one commenting about this being physically impossible (unless the car in front is significantly slower/stopped)?

[–] Screamium@lemmy.world 30 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Thank you, Neil deGrasse Tyson. I had no idea shooting a green shell couldn't be done like in Mario Kart!

[–] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

Fuck. Can we do it like a red shell? Do bananas at least work?
