yea turns out i'd be way more okay with ai stealing my work if they paid me money for doing so, lmao

also the fucking gall to be like "people are just mad bc they're getting unemployed and starving to death" like it's not the most heinous shit ever is crazy

As opposed to me, who gets mad when bibeo games have political genders or black protagonists

Daily reminder that AI is not and cannot be a property issue, but rather is almost exclusively a labor issue with the remaining problems being the absurd level of waste these shitty corporate chatbots represent and the flood of low-quality slop they enable. The idea that IP is such a sacred and inviolable thing that even just looking at it wrong without prior written authorization from a corporation that claims the right to license it as they please constitutes theft is absurd even within the context of how absurd, overreaching, and all-around bad IP law already is.

Just look at what the result of all the talk about "proper licensing" has yielded: a few big corporations that own content hosting and aggregation sites simply say "we get to license everything we touch" and that's that, they get a payday from another corporation and that corporation gets to legitimize its shady proprietary model because it "properly licensed" the training data.

The closest thing to ethically neutral that generative AI gets are the open source local models, because those at least are tools that anyone can grab and use instead of being secreted away for exclusive corporate use like proprietary models are. Now most of the hobbyist community around those are absolutely vile and wading through them to learn about the tools is a real kind-vladimir-ilyich sort of experience, and they still have the same potential for harm as the secretive proprietary corporate models do, but they at least have the potential to be used as a labor multiplying tool by independent artists.

I wholly agree, the IP question is essentially a turf war between two sets of parasitical rent-seeking oligarchs. Whoever wins, we the working class lose.

All the dangers of LLM's we are being warned about are kind of bullshit. They are not going to turn into Skynet. They are not going to be turned into a Wunderwaffe by China. And who gives a fuck whether the tech ghouls or the IP ghouls get the big payday in the end? I am beginning to think all this pearl clutching is masking the real danger of LLM's, how they are being used to replace human labour with enshittified automata.

Saying someone using AI has talent and those who refuse to don't is a good bit

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

By his logic, I can use chatGPT to do all the coding for me and I’m every bit as much of a tech wizard as he is, right?

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

As long as you pay your subscription I’m sure he’d be happy to let you believe that

I hate AI so much. Anyone that uses AI is automatically an asshole. It's such a good sign

Just wanted to edit this in but it's not even AI. To sell this fucking bullshit they did a PR spin and decided AI is now AGI and their algorithms are now "AI" when they're really just digital theft and aggregation tools

ofc the dude has a Swedish sounding name as well

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago (4 children)

why is every linus (outside of peanuts and tux and the australian graphics design guy on youtube) a whiny ass swedish millennial

[–] KalleKatt@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

I guess it is because Sweden is a nation that is very big on IT, which why we have a lot of representation in that sphere.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

A younger Linus could also just be the son of a tech guy

if i went to 10 different restaurants and then put all the food together on a plate people would rightly tell me i "didn't cook anything". AI literally can't create. it can only steal. show me an AI actually creating art. you can't, because it can't.

They shouldn't have to get permission and pay royalties tho

Yes, being born between 1980 and 1989 automatically makes one an expert on sampling, very galaxy-brain take.

There's only one good Linus in tech.

Edit: Meant Torvalds, but guess only Peanuts Linus is cool.

[–] fox@hexbear.net 36 points 1 week ago

Linus Tech Tips is a small business tyrant who thinks ad blocking is piracy and Linux Linus is a chud gobbling up propaganda about Russians being orcs to the point he happily approved of a bunch of Russian maintainers being randomly stripped of their ability to contribute to the Linux kernel

[–] totalyNOTaPIRATE@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

This one is russophobic (banned russian kernel contribuitors) and treated people over the years so bad that he needed to apologize one time. I mean. People on the internet need to stop asap making internet foundations (look at Linux foundation) in USA and USA colonies. Tomorrow they will ban chinese too because Trump or just China bad (many contribuitors are chinese so maybe not). Also look what they are doing with internet archive. Literaly suing for so much money it may have to shutdown.

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago

He's pretty lib though.

Ok, lots of Russian trolls out and about.

It's entirely clear why the change was done, it's not getting reverted, and using multiple random anonymous accounts to try to "grass root" it by Russian troll factories isn't going to change anything.

And FYI for the actual innocent bystanders who aren't troll farm accounts - the "various compliance requirements" are not just a US thing.

If you haven't heard of Russian sanctions yet, you should try to read the news some day. And by "news", I don't mean Russian state-sponsored spam.

As to sending me a revert patch - please use whatever mush you call brains. I'm Finnish. Did you think I'd be supporting Russian aggression? Apparently it's not just lack of real news, it's lack of history knowledge too.
