"The traitor: Degradation of Alfred Dreyfus, degradation in the Morland Court of the military school in Paris"

The Dreyfus affair (French: affaire Dreyfus) was a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. The scandal began in December 1894 when Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a 35-year-old Alsatian French artillery officer of Jewish descent, was wrongfully convicted of treason for communicating French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and sent overseas to the penal colony on Devil's Island in French Guiana, where he spent the following five years imprisoned in very harsh conditions.

In 1896, evidence came to light—primarily through the investigations of Lieutenant Colonel Georges Picquart, head of counter-espionage—which identified the real culprit as a French Army Major named Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy. High-ranking military officials suppressed the new evidence, and a military court unanimously acquitted Esterhazy after a trial lasting only two days. The Army laid additional charges against Dreyfus, based on forged documents. Subsequently, writer Émile Zola's open letter J'Accuse...! in the newspaper L'Aurore stoked a growing movement of political support for Dreyfus, putting pressure on the government to reopen the case.

In 1899, Dreyfus was returned to France for another trial. The intense political and judicial scandal that ensued divided French society between those who supported Dreyfus, the "Dreyfusards" such as Sarah Bernhardt, Anatole France, Charles Péguy, Henri Poincaré and Georges Clemenceau; and those who condemned him, the "anti-Dreyfusards" such as Édouard Drumont, the director and publisher of the antisemitic newspaper La Libre Parole. The new trial resulted in another conviction and a 10-year sentence, but Dreyfus was pardoned and released. In 1906, Dreyfus was exonerated. After being reinstated as a major in the French Army, he served during the whole of World War I, ending his service with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He died in 1935.

The Dreyfus affair came to symbolise modern injustice in the Francophone world; it remains one of the most notable examples of a miscarriage of justice and of antisemitism. The affair divided France into pro-republican, anticlerical Dreyfusards and pro-Army, mostly Catholic anti-Dreyfusards, embittering French politics and encouraging radicalisation. The press played a crucial role in exposing information and in shaping and expressing public opinion on both sides of the conflict.

Jfc university poly sci profs are cooked. I overheard one of them talking to their students "I don't care if you're the biggest trump supporter ever, as long as you can back up your claims. I've given great grades to papers I hate." So glad I never even considered taking a political science course lmao

Also I love Slavic profs, every single one provides all the material needed free of charge, no $300 textbooks required

Well, someone stole my bike last night, that bike was the only reason I felt mildly safe as a trans and homeless person. Don’t know what to do now. I mean, I guess I could go dig a hole and die

[–] ramosfan@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

Man of all things this shit had to happen. I would’ve rather had my bag, or literally anything else stolen

Quit my job over a month ago and did a fuckton of very intense advocacy work, like literally spending all day and night and not showering and barely eating because it was so consuming. Then 9 FUCKING DAYS of family time 2 days after settling down from the advocacy. And THEN I had to write a statement of purpose for college where you have to talk yourself up and I hate that the answers are self evident like "I WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL TO MAKE MONEY BECAUSE I NEED THIS STUPID SLIP OF PAPER EVEN THOUGH I'VE BEEN DOING THE WORK FOR YEARS". And today I'm submitting my application for a Masters program and THEN I CAN FINALLY RALAX I AM SO TIRED Y'ALL agony-yehaw .....Except tax season cometh. God dAMN

People are on the streets crying due to Trudeau’s resignation. This is like Kim Jong Il’s death.

My ADHD character trait is that every time someone asks me a question while I'm in the middle of something at work I lose 1 energy. I'm currently at like -200 energy for the day and half of that has originated from one person.

porky-happy: “Capitalism wishes to make everyone unequally rich, socialism wishes to make everyone equally poor.”

This is such a bs cliche. If we lived in a world where the average wealth was between millionaires and quadrillionaires, then one million dollars would literally be worthless. Money is inherently power and if that level is commonplace, then prices would rise to follow suit. Billionaires understand this and that’s why they use both rent-seeking strategies and artifical scarcity, the latter of which also disproves this cliche.

Now that Trudeau is gone will Jordan Peterson finally be released from the gender gulag? Will Chrystia Freeland deliver her speech on the cult of personality and its consequences?

Just realized kamala-coconut-tree is going to have to certify that mccrucified won the election, and that is the last thing anyone is gonna see of her until they decide she's in the mix for 2028. Will also be fun to see what college gives her some makework "job", so she'll have something to do for the next 2.5 years

"Watching Adam Friedland in the Adam Friedland Show made me like Jewish people again,” Ye wrote alongside a poster for the podcast, which also starred Nick Mullen. “No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people.”

The rapper added, “No Cumtown fan can be labeled antisemite knowing Adam is Jew. Thank you Adam Friedland I love you.”

Okay, so the dialectic between the mechanical and electrical is a running thing in twin peaks and injustice now realized that Gordon Cole uses a hearing aide. And while I don't wanna be ableist, David Lynch who plays him isn't deaf so I can read into this. His auditory sense is dependent on an electronic device and everything he heard is moderated by electricity. That's gotta mean something.

South Korean capitalism is so interesting. "Accountability" is held frequently but power is given right back to the capitalist class nonetheless and it just cycles over and over.

Anyone know any good sources about it or any perspectives from the south Korean left ? Preferably in the modern era but I'll take anything

idk journalpostingHaving the realisation that I maybe actually just don't want to eat around my relatives anymore. There's probably too much lingering there from having been a "slow and picky" eater as a child. It's not actively distressing to me when I'm there, but... I do come away with zero fuckin spoons every time. I dunno.

I find I want a lot of space from my family actually. I do not hate them but even this amount of remove, living in my own place with my partner, away from them, isn't really enough I guess. If they didn't treat me exactly like when I was 15, maybe I'd be more normal about it...

Hadn't watched movies in a while. Finally got around to watching Thirst (dir. Park Chan Wook). It's great! Would recommend, fun take on vampires and uses the concept to explore a lot of interesting themes beyond just the usual good overcoming evil. Now I just have to see Stoker and I'll be done with his whole filmography. Truly the best to ever do it.
