I feel you, racist servers usually treat me like shit because they assume I won't tip.

Trickle down linguistics. That phrase was a staple of AAVE and white people stole it and made it cringe. A tale as old as time

One could argue that some of the dynastic Chasidic sects do kinda have someone telling them what to think in the form of their Rebbes.

Not all of them, and there's a lot of different subtypes of Orthodox. My comment is overly simplified but basically not even all types of Orthodox Jews can have a legal Israeli marriage, it's at the discretion of the rabbinical court.

I also actually didn't know this until now, but looks like other marriages are recognized as long as it's an approved religion, of which Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, & Renewal Jews are not.

Israel recognizes only marriages under the faiths of Jewish, Muslim, and Druze communities, and ten specified denominations of Christianity.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_in_Israel

They can all emigrate to Israel, but are not recognized as religiously Jewish. Most Jews in the US are Reform, the second largest group are various types of Orthodox. The chunk of US Jews that are unaffiliated are even larger than the US Orthodox population.

This leads to an odd situation where a huge chunk of Jews that emigrate to Israel are not actually considered religiously Jewish for the purposes of burial or marriage.

There are sects of Orthodox Jews in Israel (mostly Haredi, which is itself also a large umbrella with many subtypes) that are anti-zionist on religious grounds.

Furthermore if you're not the right kind of Jew in Israel (Orthodox) you can't get married. Tons of people fly to Cyprus and then get married

I lean towards integration although I recognize the South African integration has largely failed, and it should be approached in a different way (how, I am unsure).

I don't really believe white leftists when they promote expulsion, tbh. I highly doubt white leftists are gonna get up and leave America if indigenous people demand it, and it comes across to me as performative self flagellation.

By decolonize do you mean sending white people back to Europe en masse or do you mean reeducation of white people?

The latter is necessary, the former is a meme imo.

Agree in theory, but it would be practically impossible. Which I guess is the point I'm trying to make with most Israelis, barring the recent settler movement. This sentiment is just a meme and not something we can practically do irl.

I've thought about this idea for a while now, but with a different context. I'm American, but my ancestors were forcibly brought here as slaves.

America should belong to the indigenous people that have been here and have had this land stolen from them by Europeans. But I didn't choose to be here, and neither did my ancestors. Where will I go? Just randomly show up in Nigeria, where I'm "from" but have zero actual connection to?

Are you American?

Sometimes people I just met (in a platonic context) will ask me things like "hey, what's your Instagram, let's keep in touch!"

My standard answer is that I don't do social media, but I have found that people take it as bragging perhaps? I get answers like "oh, good for you! I wish I didn't" or whatever.

If I say oh here's my number that seems too odd these days, people not that much younger than me (I'm 31) don't seem to text anymore. They use fb messenger or Instagram or others.

Also saying something like "I'm a privacy advocate and I use the fediverse" is also an odd thing to say unless I'm around techy people and even then it's weird tbh.

How do I approach this? I don't think I am better than people that use social media, its just not for me. I would prefer to text but I am not sure that works for a lot of people.

Or should I just bite the bullet and get an Instagram so that I don't seem weird, and then perhaps ask for further contact details via that platform?

Abstaining from social media can be extremely alienating.

autistic btw if you couldn't tell lmao, I have spent a lot of time thinking about this problem

Like there was Best of 2020/21 with the worst takes ever. I'm looking for links to those plus the 2022 edition if anyone's got it.

I vaguely remember a few:

  • Bernie reminds me of when my abusive dad throws the pot roast at the wall when he talks too loudly about healthcare
  • political consultant white woman with dyed hair who looks like a hunger games villian and tweets like 90s era snoop dogg. I'm talking like "yo yo wiggity wack" levels of cringe
  • Person who says they would genocide 1 billion dogs to save a hypothetical baby, unprompted
  • Anti mask woman who posted a mask that looks like someone rubbed fucking Cheeto dust on the inside and says everyone's mask looks like that at the end of the day
  • hornyposting about sex w/ Beto or something

There's tons of others but these are the ones that live rent free in my head.

I have no idea what the fuck's going on most of the time unless I hear about it second hand.

  • I do not watch videos (I am a boomer)
  • I do not listen to podcasts (boomer)
  • I don't use social media except hexbear/lemmy
  • not gonna read the paper or w/e (not that much of a boomer)
  • I only read WSJ/HuffPo/Politico/CNN whatever for the laughs every once in a while

Any good sites you go to for reputable news? Blogs that are not necessarily news but are maybe about the news are good too. Lately I've been reading a lot of Erin in the Morning, for example.

Bonus points if it has an RSS feed
