The most humiliating part of most job applications is having to temporarily portray yourself as appropriately house-broken, aka employable. Someone who is optimistic and believes that their labor for the company will let them actualize their deepest values. Anyway imagine if all social network posts were written solely by people at the exact nadir of that humiliation ritual.

For autism no supplement will beat a rigorous routine of getting good sleep and making sure you’re eating healthy consistent meals and drinking lots of water and are at a comfortable temperature. A small amount of caffeine might help but I have to be so fuckin refined in my routine to keep my shit together that it’s annoying.

The ruling came almost a year after lawyers made their closing arguments in the September 2023 judge-alone trial, which was shown footage of Ahmo's final moments of consciousness — including a nearly 21-minute video that showed the inmate saying "I can't breathe" more than 20 times while under restraint in the prone position.

The judge said his review included considering the fact that Ahmo had been pepper-sprayed during the course of the altercation, something court heard can often make people feel like they can't breathe.

He said there "was every reason to believe" Ahmo's comments about not being able to breathe were because of that spray, "particularly given that Mr. Ahmo continued to fight, resist and struggle, and given that Mr. Ahmo can be seen breathing heavily at times on the video by virtue of his chest contracting in and out — something that would have been visible to those that were present ... including the accused."

if you're being restrained by racist cops in such a way that you can't breathe, attempting to struggle to keep from being murdered will be taken as evidence that you can in fact breathe

Recently picked up Slay the Spire on my phone so I could play it on a long car ride and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Will probably pick this one up as well.

Been thinking about this since I've been playing Rain World. I feel that Rain World is solidly within the genre. There are definitely video essays out there about it being about existing in an ecosystem or whatever. Pathologic is another obvious one. The original Dark Souls is probably paradigmatic of this category.

What traits define this category? I think:

  • Difficult, you struggle to make progress
  • Inscrutable narrative motivation
  • Hidden depth to the world that can be teased out through intensive study
  • Possible to find it fun, but much likelier to just bounce off (and watch the video essay instead!)

Is this a valid category?

Another article details how the fraudster claims he acquired the fake paintings from the artist:

The provenance info indicated Voss's father was a guard at the Kenora, Ont., jail, where Morrisseau was periodically incarcerated, said the statement. It alleged guards obtained many paintings from the artist.

Truly disgusting. The settlers love to infiltrate indigenous arts, eating it hollow and wearing its skin.

I don't know the specifics of this example project (and am honestly too lazy to replicate it on my own computer) but here is my debugging process for stuff like this:

  1. You got a 404 response, which is different from the nothing-ness response you'd get from going to like localhost:12345 or some random port. This means that a web service is actually listening on port 5000, receiving your request, and serving you a 404 page; is any logging happening on the console when you access this page?
  2. Are you supposed to access your app over a web browser (like it serves an HTML page) or is it a REST API that you would use a different tool to access (usually a browser extension or some CLI tool)?
  3. If you're supposed to access your app over a web browser, try going to localhost:5000/index.html or something
  4. None of your https endpoints will be set up by default probably, but anyway you can't listen over https (aka SSL aka TLS) without having some kind of a certificate, self-signed or otherwise; usually for local testing you set up a self-signed cert which when visited in the browser will take you to the "connection not secure" page since your browser doesn't trust random certs, only those that can be chained back to a root of trust (aka big companies like microsoft or LetsEncrypt)

I'm not vouching for them, they certainly aren't all skinner boxes though. You could find a few but the skinner box rate is way above zero for PC and console games these days too.

Looking at the front page of the iOS app store games category page I see (excluding ones that say they're "for you"):

  • Age of Empires mobile pre-order (idk what this is, maybe it's got a bunch of in-game currencies)
  • MONOPOLY GO!
  • Roblox
  • Subway Surfers
  • Pokemon GO
  • Fallout Shelter
  • Genshin Impact
  • Monster Train (deckbuilding roguelike battles)
  • NYT Games: Word Games & Sodoku
  • Call of Duty: Mobile
  • Minion Rush: Running game
  • My Talking Tom 2 (some kind of game where you talk to a cat?)
  • Smash Hit

idk it feels like this site is stuck in the mid-2010s perception that everything on the app store is a Zynga clicker Clash of Clans clone with a yelling man as the icon

Bounced off this game at least twice over the years but am finally gelling with it. It works well with the steam deck since each run between storms isn't very long so it's easy to pick up and put down. I think when the game finally clicked for me is when I realized it was less about progression to the next area and more about learning to live in and occupy each space, integrating into the ebb & flow of the local flora & fauna. Like:

There's some corn I can get if I go over here. And some bubble fruit over there, as long as I take care to evade the lizard who hangs out near it. Sometimes the scavenger tribe comes through here - what can I give them as a gift so they won't attack me? Time to venture out to this area so I can collect some bats. I bet that corn I ate a while ago has regrown by now. I get a bonus if I go six days in a row without eating meat, can I do that? Gotta take care in this section and watch for the shadows cast as vultures come down. Time to start heading back to the den for the day.

My enjoyment increased quite a bit after I stopped turning my arrival in each area into a quick springboard to get to the next area, and instead sunk into it for a while & mastered the art of existing in that ecosystem. Only after perfecting a routine would I start venturing further out to see what's next. Very unique game.

None of the antisemitism commissioners for either the German Federal Government or its Bundesländer, or states, is ethnically Jewish—which, according to Klein, is by design. “The fight against antisemitism is a problem for the whole of society. It isn’t a problem for the Jewish community to face by itself,” he told me. “I mean, it’s not as though the most pressing problem with antisemitism in Germany is among Jews.”
