Honestly, a streaming service should buy the rights to this and put out an Orgy of the Dead variety show every year.

It's a nudie cutie where women take turns dancing topless and a couple has to watch for some reason. The dialogue between the hosts and the monster characters could be perfect banter and a Greek chorus, but it just goes nowhere. It's so captivatingly bad it could easily make your annual Halloween watch list.

I could see a modern version working so well that's full of drag, burlesque, and whatever other weird freaky stuff you can come up with.

The 1965 version is camp, it needs to go all out gay.

You can probably find it on YouTube or other means, I got reminded about Orgy of the Dead from a Mubi email, it may not be available in your country on there though.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Another Year (2010), a British slice-of-life drama from Mike Leigh, who is best-known for Naked (1993) and Secrets &n Lies (1996), neither of which we have watched. It centers on a happily-married old bougie couple whose happiness is interrupted by the incursions of their shitty family and friends, all of whom are determined to bring their drama into the couple’s lives. This is just what life is like in the UK. A lot of critical acclaim for this, and we’ve never watched any of Leigh’s stuff, so let’s check it out.

After that is Kneecap (2024), the first rap musical film made entirely in the Irish language. Follow the fictionalized real-life tale of a trio of staunchly republican, working-class Belfast dudes who start a rap group to save their native tongue and decolonize their country from the Br*tish. This is the debut feature of director Rich Peppiatt, and has already been receiving some awards buzz. Currently the highest-rated Irish-language film on Letterboxd. We’ll give it a try.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Enter the Void (2009), a psychedelic melodrama-art-thriller about a drugn dealer who is shot dead by the police, after which he goes on a strange journey through the afterlife, taking him through the seedy Tokyo underworld. Its gimmick is that it is shot entirely from the POV of the protagonist, i.e., a first-person view, in video-game parlance. Director is Gaspar Noe (the same guy behind Climax [2018]), so expect a whole lot of sex, drugs, and violence along the way. Looks neat; let’s check it out.

After that is REC (2007), a Spanish found-footage horror film centering on a film crew that follows some firefighters into what looks like a routine job in an apartment building, only for the building to be sealed off with everyone still inside as a strange disease spreads among them. Things go from bad to worse from there. It is the best-known and best-regarded work of director duo Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza. This is considered one of the better films of its ilk, so we’ll give it a whirl.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is the long-awaited Joker: Folie a Deux, which is currently bombing spectacularly at the box office. What if they made a sequel to Joker (2019) that consisted almost entirely of courtroom drama and musical numbers featuring Lady Gaga? Sounds pretty neat to me, but apparently, general audiences do not agree. We’ll decide for ourselves.

After that is Pedicab Driver (1989), a Hong Kong action comedy about two pedicab drivers in Macau who must work together to save their love interests (one a baker, and the other a prostitute) from their evil bosses. A whole lot of fighting and comic antics ensue as they start to attract the attention of the criminal underworld. Considered one of the best works of Sammo Hung, who both directs and stars. Looks cool; let’s watch.

The visual cuisine for tonight is the continuation of season 2 of the Harley Quinn anime, a version of Project Ako with the storyboards displayed next to the final render, and the Rebirth of Mothra.

Harley Quinn is about Harley Quinn embarking on her own adventures after dumping Joker, which she did in season 1 - now she's working on taking over an isolated and dilapidated Gotham from other villains in Gotham.

Project Ako is a legendary anime about a super-powered girl, her longtime friend, and a rich, mechanically-inclined, jealous rival. It is a very good anime but, unfortunately at times, still an anime. We will be watching a version with the storyboards displayed.

Rebirth of Mothra is the first in a trilogy and sees the giant bug fighting a world-ending monster that sucks the life out of the environment.
