who didn't have many real friends in washington

Tbh are there any real friendships between people in elite political circles anyway?

very, very few. interestingly, of the extremely small number of examples I can think of, they're all on the republican side. like, a few of them are legitimately golf buddies, go on vacation together, their kids are friends, etc. on the Democrat side, I really can't think of anyone I've known over the years who has legitimate, non-transactional friendships.

I’d imagine trying to make friends as a powerful person, it’s very difficult to tell when someone likes you vs when someone wants something from you. I’m often grateful that people don’t have a good reason to ingratiate themselves to me. I’m too autistic for that shit.

I remember when I was young and lonely I felt like getting money and/or power would be cool because having fake friends sounded better than what I had.

I'm still lonely, but I value myself more.
