I think it was DayZ where it properly began. Prior to that I have little memory of it ever being raised.
before that i think russians were the boogeyman. gaming in china was also probably different as well iirc the major consoles were hard to get and steam wasn't over there officially until... 2021? shit that's later than i thought

PUBG was very popular worldwide and eventually acquired and marketed by a Chinese company. It also ran like dogshit and the devs didn’t really care so the complaints were more warranted
