Reddit had a deluge of people posting screeds about how “pay to win” was baked into Chinese culture as being acceptable. They’d lump it in with the anti micro transactions rage that hadn’t died yet at the time.

Puts it right before and around the time of gamergate. Really quite possible this was pushed by same groups that created that for far right purposes.
You think Bannon was involved? He made money off WoW gold farming and was involved in a white paper that used it as a case study.
In gamergate? Yes. There's several things that link him, the start of it wasn't manufactured but they jumped on the opportunity and it kick started the alt-right. In the chinese stuff? Maybe. Timing is similar enough for it to be something they might've tried.
I've been involved in enough huge major internet dramas now to realise just how few people can drive them.
