Kinda funny (sad) that insurance companies are the only ones who take climate change seriously cause it affects their bottom line

Firstly fuck this guy, fuck his house, and it totally makes sense for insurance companies to not continue to insure houses in areas no longer fit for human habitation, like Florida or Malibu

That being said, I don’t think they should be allowed to cancel existing policies. Like, ever. You can refuse to issue new policies, but if someone buys a home and you sell them insurance, you have to keep insuring them until they move or decide they don’t want your insurance anymore. Maybe you can have the option of paying out the whole amount of the policy to be done with it.

But dropping policies on houses people already owned and insured should be so incredibly fucking illegal and whoever signed the paperwork should be shot. When you buy a house, you do that with the insurance in mind. Changing that after the fact when the person already bought the house and now can’t sell it because it’s uninsurable is evil.

Literally the only companies who will

Heartbreaking: the worst industry you know has made a great point.

Also, doesn't the Pentagon have contingencies in place for when the sea level rises?

[–] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

At a certain point we shouldn't call them contingencies anymore and just acknowledge them as plans in progress.

People always accusing the left of being violent extremists but meanwhile right-wingers and "centrists" out here making hashtags called "KillThemAll"

Those Patriot Front jackasses would be a lot more hesitant to show up if there was a 5% chance somebody would huck a grenade into their uhaul while they're all packed in like nazi sardines.

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Right? It ranks at 7.5 Voldemorts on my ebil scale

JESSE WATTERS (CO-HOST): They've contained 0% of this fire, and it didn't need to be this way. This man cannot manage water or forests. Did you know they've had record rainfall and he hasn't built a single reservoir? Hasn't broken ground on a single reservoir. It rains in California and just washes into the ocean.

He is bragging about tearing dams down. He tore more dams down -- four -- than anybody in the history of this country. Because the Native Americans told him to do it, because it would save some salmon. Now look at this.

According to Reuters the water shortage was more of a logistics problem, not really about a lack of water around.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 44 points 3 days ago (1 children)

nothing says, "I understand the practical management and mitigation of risk from wild fires" like not doing anything about having your multimillion dollar fire insurance cancelled for 4 months in your home surrounded by dry brush during the dry season in a part of the country that has been increasingly hammered by wildfires.

that last panel about how he lost his home and has no insurance coverage is fucking out-goddamn-standing. I hope he is as fucked as I imagine.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I could have literally saved his house in those four months for less than his insurance if he just paid me to clear brush. That is literally one of the things I have done as a side job for decades. I was literally trained for this exact thing by my dad and stepdad from the age of like 9.

yeah for sure. I went through a wildland fire fighting course about a decade ago, which was primarily about the safety protocols and strategies/tactics of wildland fire fighting.... which is mostly about trying to save the lives of people and sometimes property who live where wildlands intersect with human habitation by rapidly cutting fire lines and pre burning areas.

in the aftermath of that and my other experiences in forest ecology and agroforestry/marginal agriculture, I really think nobody should be allowed to own land in those places without some kind of free but serious stewardship certificate program.

someone told me that in Denmark they require someone to get a 4 year ag degree (though school is more accessible there, of course) in order to be allowed to manage a farm and I was like "damn" but as I get older, I'm like "yeah I get it". taking care of land is a serious responsibility and has dramatic impacts on community, and we just grant it to any bozo with an inheritance or cash. and frequently, the only carrot we have for getting people to do basic stewardship is to offer grants. which frankly, rich people don't need so they won't go for it unless it's super easy and big bucks.

its all ass backwards, and having experience and knowledge under one's belt drives us insane to see how much is poorly managed.

house burns down, still doesn't believe in climate change

I wonder how many people will die from climate change, still not accepting it.

[–] stigsbandit34z@hexbear.net 47 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It’s Covid all over again

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago

Many people thought don't look up was about covid

[–] SupFBI@hexbear.net 47 points 3 days ago

Shoulda been named James Bricks. Maybe his house wouldn't have burned down.

[–] VernetheJules@hexbear.net 29 points 2 days ago

why don't we have more reservoirs filled?

oh so now you give a shit about proactive measures, huh?

[–] stigsbandit34z@hexbear.net 47 points 3 days ago

the fire is not from “climate change”, you ignorant asshole. It’s because liberal idiots like you elect liberal idiots like Gavin Newson and Karen Bass. One doesn’t understand the first thing about fire management and the other can’t fill the water reservoirs.

You just know he was smuglord and half wojak-nooo (as his house was burning down) while typing this lmao

Right wing dumbasses will never accept some aspects of physical reality for no other reason than the libruls

[–] MaxOS@hexbear.net 51 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The fire has the right to defend itself

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 43 points 3 days ago

I suggest there be a two state solution where 70% of Mr. Woods's house is perpetually ablaze

[–] iByteABit@hexbear.net 50 points 3 days ago

[–] NotLuigi@hexbear.net 33 points 3 days ago

Me (my house is currently burning down): hey babe this guy on Twitter’s being a real asshole check it out

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 days ago

The only downside is that he'll be able to get a new house but I'm glad that if we must suffer climate change, at least some of the evil fucking societal ghouls are going to suffer with us

[–] CommCat@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago

I hated Woods even before I knew he held rancid politics.
