Trying to find more about him, but so far nothing but a first name:

German Volunteer of the Thalmann Batallion. He was called Hermann. Photo was taken near Huesca on September 22, 1936.

Was the Spanish civil war famous for everyone just kinda randomly showing up from all over? That's the impresion I've always gotten.

Yes, since it was so soon after hitler became dictator a lot of people where determined to fight in Spain.
