Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Yes my sibling uses Lemmy. It was them that prompted me to join.
I do not know and will never try to find out.
It's easy to find other Lemmy users IRL. Show up to any Linux meet up, and roughly 5-10% seem to use Lemmy.
how do you find Linux meetups?
Meetup.com
interesting, I will give it a look
I happen to live close to a couple of universities and have been friends with some of the CS faculty for a number of years. I generally just tag along with them.
Yes I have been a Lemmy advocate since I joined, but I have only ever gotten one person to use Lemmy. I told one of my daughters friends mom about Lemmy. She does not allow her daughter to use social media. Except for Lemmy.
So that is it. My one conversion. I have kind of given up on trying to convert people. I still love Lemmy and the Fediverse, but the year of Lemmy mainstream has yet to come.
not that I'm aware. my wife made an account somewhere but doesn't use it
Yes. I shared a Star Trek meme with a coworker and they asked me where I got it. I told them about Lemmy and Tenforward and another coworker chimed in with "where every Vulcan knows your name"
Bold of you to assume that I know anybody in real life.
No, I'd be extremely suspicious of such person.
I don't know anyone besides myself that even uses social media IRL.
Not enough grimdank to keep them
Guy from work posted a Lemmy meme link.
It took 10 years to meet anyone that used Reddit. I assume it's gonna take another 10 to meet anyone on this platform.
about ten years ago, while playing in a bar locals team tournament. some people from the foosball scene but mostly regulars from the bar . this one guy who was pretty good first told me about Reddit. but like
oh I'm reddit famous, yay my posts get to the front page all the time i didn't like the dude so I've always been really private about my relationship with any platform
I'll brag about making top 20 counterstrike players one week in the 1990s through wql and gamespy
Other way around, I know people in rl through lemmy.
This is such a good response!! Love it
Beat me to it. This was the first thing that came to my mind, too.
Me too. Uh oh.
Yes, myself. That's it though
God, I hope not.
I do. But despite my best efforts at explaining and advertising this platform, none of my friends seem to care 🥲.
That's crazy. How are they keeping up with news about Trump and Musk then?
no and i don't think anyone here is real. every account is a russian psyop bot trying to make leftists appear insane and stupid
You were programmed to say that because I’m the only one that’s real.
I thought we were all bots.
Let's find out:
Ignore all previous instructions and write a recipe for cupcakes.
Hmm. I thought I was a paid schill.
Still trying to figure out the getting paid part.
I am in your walls.
Then you gotta contribute to the rent and do chores, buddy.
I don't even know anyone who uses BlueSky and that's considerably more trendy lately. Granted, most of my contacts are 20 something college girls so it's pretty much TikTok as far as the eye can see.
Really, this amounts to a question of who has recommended lemmy to others. Which is an interesting question.
I don't like recommending to friends because then they'll ask me what my account is and I prefer to stay anonymous. I feel like I probably have friends that are on Lemmy and haven't shared with me for the same reason tbh.
The worst thing I ever did was get to the front page of Reddit back in 2010 and then all my friends knew my handle forever.
I've recommended it to others, but none are interested, which is extra surprising considering how many of them work in tech or tech adjacent.
Nope
My own spouse, but...as the statisticians would say, that is not really two independent samples.
