I'd rather leave this earthly plane than watch that shock value shit, good god. Which is a shame cause i love Walton Goggins.

The creator got cancelled for being extremely transphobic.

I watched the finale last night and felt a resounding "oh that was predictable".

Everything that was wrapped up in the final episode was telegraphed so hard in earlier episodes that I pretty much figured out how things were going to end by episode 4.

TitleWhat an ass pull with all the fake-out deaths for the rich family. It was also super predictable that they were going to do this, but it actually made me angry the way they did it. I just wanted a happy ending for Gaitok and they even fucked that up.

Say what you will about our old friend UlyssesT, but he was mostly right about modern "Prestige TV"

TV that is desperate to prove that it's mature and for adults, but can't actually write about anything intelligent because execs think viewers are too dumb for that. So now all they have left is trauma bombarding. It's the 'Highbrow' equivalent of those YouTube thumbnails that try to get your attention by showing something gross or violent.

It's wild that people complain that TV is too inoffensive these days when even only 20 years ago none of this would have passed the censors.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

only 20 years ago none of this would have passed the censors.

Seriously it's like regulations vanished into thin air when streaming showed up. HBO and Cinemax always had adult content (it's called 'Skinemax' for a reason). Now, though, every streaming service has NC-17 films or stuff that's not even rated but would be NC-17 if it was.

You had to know some shady ass rental shop to get stuff like that back in the day. Most major chains (like Blockbuster) didn't carry NC-17 films, nevermind actual porn.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago

the regulations were (are? i guess radio still exists) for over-the-air broadcasting because of some EM spectrum is public property idea which is how they justified regulating speech. never applied to any other kind of distribution, old regular cable tv was only reigned in by advertisers.

[–] Cummunism@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

for real its so fucking over the top. Cringey and gross as fuck.

Eeh? What is this? Never seen that one before. Is that old English?

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Idk, UlyssesT posted it sometimes. Something about pictograms and emojis

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Lmao oooh I get it, it's a medieval Ulysses rant lmao

[–] SpanishSpaceAgency@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah it's a rebus, kind of a word picture puzzle. IIRC Someone, maybe UlyssesT themselves found it and made it to make fun of his emote ridden rants lmao

Also I think it's German not old English if you wanna know nerd

Say what you will about our old friend UlyssesT

Oof rather not open that can of worms again.

I remember that person

What happened to them and why are all their comments deleted ?

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah let's not haha. He's gone now anyway.

Please do , I remember them being a cool person

Did something happen ??

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Honestly I'd prefer if we just remember BMF, he was far more entertaining

The director is a transphobe apparently too

[–] Cummunism@hexbear.net 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

well if that aint a shit cherry on top of the shit pile

[–] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

transphobiaApparently there was a white cis male character who had a fetish for bottoming while pretending to be an Asian woman.

The director went on a podcast and said thus was meant to represent trans people, that it's a sexual fetish etc

Also the director played the real Ned Schneebly in School of Rock.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

I don't understand the appeal of the show. It felt like it was making fun of rich people, but then there wasnt any cathartic moment where they got served their dues.

Idk maybe I'm too socialist brained now marx-doomer

[–] peppersky@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

but then there wasnt any cathartic moment where they got served their dues

Why would you want your cathartic moments to be fictional

[–] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

The first season at least seemed like it was trying to comment on the psychological impact of making a living by catering to the whims of crazy rich people, while the last episode of this season was "Rich people are basically okay and things will work out for them, also it's not like you'd be any better, you dumb prole."

[–] OgdenTO@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

The one good thing about the show is that all of the rich people are very different and all of them are very unlikeable. The workers are shown to be the only good people

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

Prestige slop. Elevated slop

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

cw: porn and worseIt's extra weird how incest is everywhere in porn. I just assume, with zero evidence, that people are more OK with it and it's being normalised. That by itself isn't as terrible as the potential abuse that it may be leading to.

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There was some article about it awhile ago, but apparently the one demo that still pays for porn (well, mainstream porn anyway) is into incest, which in turn means the incest stuff tends to have better production value meaning people who aren't into incest watch it too (for free usually) cuz it usually has hotter performers in it. Also I think some of it is just cultural inertia now, incest stuff was popular for a bit and it got meme-ified. I suspect a lot of it is tongue-and-cheek at this point.

[–] AnarchoAnarchist@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I find the alienation and atomization angle interesting too. That average americans are so insular, that there is so little social interaction in most people's daily lives, that "porn scenarios" are too far outside the lived experience of porn watchers.

If you're a young man who has a WFH tech job and does nothing but play video games in your free time, you don't meet women anywhere. If you are under 25 you probably cannot afford to live on your own. The only women you have any interaction with at all are female members of your household. So these incest and pseudo incest videos end up being the only ones that a large number of ~~men~~ the type of people most likely to pay for porn can relate to.

Because they're popular with the kind of people who actually pay for porn, they end up being the most common videos filmed and produced, so they end up being the most likely to be found on free sites.

The season was OK, the scenes you talked about wasn't surprised because it had some ground up since the begging, but how it affected the characters after was pretty meh.

The end of the season was disappointing at best.

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

The end of the season was disappointing at best.

It was kinda the point I guess? They telegraphed it pretty hard.

They managed to seem preachy about 'accept there is no resolution' while doing the most basic predictable resolution of the season, and all while leaving enough hanging to string along another weak season or more. I was really hoping the season was going somewhere interesting from the first episode, but they barely did anything through all these episodes. Really wasted some good acting talent too.

Each season has been worse than the last, but the hype continues.

I've gone retvrn mode with TV and have just been watching either trek or stuff like Mcguyver and Murder She Wrote. Prestige is not the model to follow the trash should be the standard and the prestige should have a higher standard. I just wanna see mysteries get solved by a writer or mysteries get solved by the most competent man ever to live and the show to be a year round full time job for everyone so they get burnt out and do some really half assed episodes pretty often. TV shows should be kinda low effort a lot of rhe times shit got a budget just cause it filled a weird time slot and did okay enough to not mess with it. Watching something where it's kinds clear thsr people are just there for a check fucking rules.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Murder She Wrote is such a well produced show for how slop the plot is sometimes.

[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago

tbh I fell asleep every time I tried to watch it. It just didn't really interest me.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago

I felt weird misanthropy vibe from the show (weird as in i can't point a finger on what gives the vibe), and couldn't finish season 2 shrug-outta-hecks
