And here is a thread talking about the many times SA has been mention in SW

SA is usually used in fiction just for pure empty shock value, it isn't about how it affects women, 90% of the time it is just used to "inspire" the men in the story to seek revenge. So usually I'd agree with this statement of it not belonging in a work of fiction.

However, context does matter, and it does just seem like this guy is mad that his cool TV fascists are doing actual fascist things instead of just being "badass" or whatever.

I can feel the ghost of UlyssesT in this thread.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

UlyssesT is currently climbing up mount purgatory for his aggroposting and will return once he reaches the gates of paradise

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

He went back to hell so he could kill Kissinger again?

[–] BreathThroughTheTube@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

TV shows yes. Films, usually. Novels, I would say have a lot higher ratio of handling it respectfully and seriously.

You must've been reading a much higher caliber of novels than I have then. I have read a lot of trash though, so it's hardly surprising that a trashy novel has trashy themes and empty shock value.

the "Empire Did Nothing Wrong" meme and it's consequences have been a disaster for humankind.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

and also too many are sucked in with the "they have cool ships and gear"

yes I too love disposable poorly trained infantry hordes and fragile spacecraft designed for wave tactics

vs combined arms spec-ops teams and multi-species highly competent space forces

Content Warning: Expanding on topics in the post title, fictional coercion

As if the Star Wars fandom couldn't get more pathetic

A 3+ million sub youtuber who has made their whole personality being a Star Wars-guy has not experienced or has no working memory of the original radio play(1981) that accompanied the og Star Wars where the interrogation of Leia is expanded in grisly detail. Wherein the movie the scene mercifully cuts to black with a door closing behind the torture droid with the scary needle, it appears it was always the intention to portray the scene and the writers had in mind what occurred off screen.

spoilerThe full Death Star Leia interrogation scene

I'm not actually going to listen to it again. But the theme was present in the original movie and it's even a little wild what you could get away with implying in a film and still keep a PG rating in 1977. But I guess I'm just trying to cancel Darth Vader.

Frankly I hate the idea of a Disney show acting like it can do a service to traumatized victims. I'd much rather be able to enjoy media without thinking about my PTSD. Including these sorts of arcs always ends up like 'oh it was hard and then she got better instantly and got revenge' or whatever which doesn't fucking happen and instills a toxic mindset in society.

I didn't actually look at much of the post btw lmao

[–] MiraculousMM@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

At bare minimum the episode needs a CW at the beginning and I'm disappointed they didn't include one

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 20 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Also why he bring up Vader at all when Vader DOESNT EVEN APPEAR ON Andor at all. Like hes expecting Vader to literally know everything and teleport just to force choke a honestly pretty low ranking imperial officer.

Like tbh Vader would not have any appearances that show him directly condone SA because Disney probably wont want their le epic toy figure that ends up in jedi heaven to do that, which is why vader/force users dont really show up in Andor! It would cause a huge tonal dissonance unless they are handled carefully.

[–] MiraculousMM@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

SWT has had the wildest arc from pretty standard mild-mannered SW youtuber who made a pretty good Vader short film, to full-blown right-wing grifter, who's openly a Trump and Andrew Tate fan. He makes ragebait videos and tweets and starts culture war nonsense over any SW story that isn't nostalgia bait kiddie garbage. He complained about Andor S1 having bricks and screws. I'm not even joking. On top of all that, he makes AI films with the original trilogy characters and tries to pass them off as Better Than Disney(TM)

Dude is a bottom feeding putrid sack of shit and I just want him to fucking GO AWAY

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago

At least he is currently the main character of twitter, so everyone is making fun of him

SA in SW feels unnecessary

Sexual assault in sex work "feels unnecessary"...? Well, yeah, all SA is unnecessary, it's a horrible thing to do to someone...

You can portray power dynamics and make the audience hate

OK, so this is a work of fiction depicting a sex worker getting sexually assaulted, then? The power dynamic between SW and client, SW and pimp, SW and police?

the empire in other ways without taking it to such a disgusting place

The empire...? So this is an anti-imperialist story? Is it like depicting the precarity of migrant sex work, and how this industry is created by imperialism?

Vader wouldn't tolerate that shit

I AM ONCE AGAIN ASKING ANGLOPHONES TO ADOPT KANJI SPECIFICALLY FOR WRITING ACRONYMS

Edit: Obviously it's my problem for not reading the username and not connecting Andor to Star Wars

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 days ago

I can excuse destroying an entire planet and everyone on it, but I draw the line at SA.

-- Darth Vader, probably

[–] Azarova@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Never seen SA portrayed as anything but shock value or seen victims treated respectfully in any form of media whatsoever. This sucks and I hope it's not too egregious because I like the show.

[–] baaaaaaaaaaah@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

It's thankfully not too egregious, for what it's worth.

spoileran Imperial officer tries to coerce a female character into sex, she rebuffs him, he attempts to use force, she fights him off and kills him.

It's not at all graphic and I don't think it'll be addressed again.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Just about to star andor s2 and therefore have no clue what this is about but I would agree that sexual assault shouldn't be in star wars. I'm not sure what Vader would or would t tolerate but andor does a good enough job already of showing the empire bad and going sexual about it doesn't seem necessary. I'm making a large snack and then watching soon. Whether it would be condoned under the empire doesn't mean it needs to be part of the story. Star wars is a people kiss and fall in love and sometimes have children but the sex aspect is strongly implied at best and that was only in the OT

[–] BreathThroughTheTube@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The ironic parallel here is that the Jedi repression of love is what led to Anakin turning to the dark side and their collapse. I think there's a pretty strong message that acting all stoic and never letting anyone show any emotions or love is actually quite unhealthy. Jedi should be able to fuck, but we shouldn't need to see it.

George 'Marion Ravenswood' Lucas and his legacy

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Jabba leia "slave outfit" but honestly its one of the reason I hate the first half of ROJ

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Oh yeah, that. Leia didn't deserve that and neither did Carrie Fischer. Especially cause it was part if a plan that doesn't make any sense. All of return of the jedi is crap and frankly I'm not as hot on empire as most. It has serious serious pacing issues. The first 3rd is waaaaaay too fast. Luke is getting wampa'd within the first 3 minutes and then after the both battle it meandera big time where Luke does Dakota stuff and the falcon pdcks around. There is character stuff there but the plot takes a break for a while to do side quests for those moments instead of things that tie together for the Han and Leia and the Luke stuff is mostly fine but that Vader cave scene should have been cut or done different. Swap the worm cave with something a little more intense cause there is a bit too much breathing room in the middle and maybe do more chill time on cloud city. It's super fast at the start and then slows down and then hits medium speed for a minute before gradually slowing off with a decent climax, which spends good but thr slow parts are slowwwww and the faster bits are really fast

I really only fully enjoy the first movie and andor.

[–] BreathThroughTheTube@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I have to admit I like Revenge of the Sith

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago

The prequels are probably the movies I've discussed and thought about the most ever and I need to give them that credit but it's not at all cause I think they're good. They're deeeeeeply fascinating.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Okay, just saw what I think was the scene in question and it's fine. It suggests that it's a thing through the implications of a conversation but isn't explicit.

Edit: number, that convo was in the previously on in the next episode so thst wasn't a one off
