The rainbow flag or pride flag is a symbol of LGBT pride and LGBT social movements. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. Using a rainbow flag as a symbol of LGBT pride began in San Francisco, California, but eventually became common at LGBT rights events worldwide.

Originally devised by the artists Gilbert Baker, Lynn Segerblom, James McNamara and other activists, the design underwent several revisions after its debut in 1978, and continues to inspire variations. Although Baker's original rainbow flag had eight colors, from 1979 to the present day the most common variant consists of six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is typically displayed horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be in a natural rainbow.

LGBT people and allies currently use rainbow flags and many rainbow-themed items and color schemes as an outward symbol of their identity or support. There are derivations of the rainbow flag that are used to focus attention on specific causes or groups within the community (e.g. transgender people, fighting the AIDS epidemic, inclusion of LGBT people of color). In addition to the rainbow, many other flags and symbols are used to communicate specific identities within the LGBT community.

Having lived my entire life far from anything anyone could call "gang activity", is there a good resource anyone knows of for learning about how gangs work that isn't phrenology or copaganda? I think the conditions that they emerge from are pretty obvious to point out, but how I'm made to understand how they actually work doesn't seem to fit. Why do gangs seem to always punch down and lack revolutionary potential, or even basic community building? Is my framing completely wrong from the jump?

What happens that separates, say, Crips from Black Panthers?

[–] Pavlichenko_Fan_Club@hexbear.net 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I wish I had any. Unfortunately the waters have been muddied by fields like criminology, which are basically limited to a liberal analysis of the all-to-abstract individual, psychology, etc. Like of course things like crime, and justice are a reflection of class-struggle--so in analyzing things like gangs, especially in the period of history you referrence, this generally becomes subsumed into broader theoretical concerns.

To (try and) answer your questions what separates the BPP from something like the crips is, first of all, ideology (see Revolutionary Action Movement), which, through the struggle of some dedicated revolutionaries, precipitated into a line, and program, which responded to the conditions of its time.

What confounds us is how can something like the Crips--which as far as I know was started because some guy got mad at being beat up at the gym...--come to dominate a whole era after the demise of the BPP?

At this point I can only speculate: yes, from the broadest view point the gangs that came to define the 70s--90s were a counter-offensive against the Black nationalism of the 60s, and insofar as the Black national question is a (big) component of the proletarian class struggle in this country we could call it a counter-offensive of the ruling class. BUT, the question remains, was it a conscious effort by the state, or a secondary effect of the decline of the World Proletarian Revolution that was happening at the same time? Was it a strategy, or simply a tactic to nurture these violent, petty conflicts against these revolutionary organizations. Etc. the connection is there, but remains to be fully fleshed out.

Last night a father and son got into my cab, initially it was really chill the dad kept complimenting my hair which was fun (they were both a little drunk).

Then the son got to talking about Final Fantasy 14, and like I always do I prompted him to keep going. Helps that I know the game so it was easy to talk about.

Then the dad says something to me like: "When you raid, do you ignore your wife and kids?" I'm like uhhhhh "I don't really raid" cuz what the fuck am I supposed to say to that? He went from 0-100 instantly.

Then the dad gets fucking pissed and starts going in on his son for playing video games. I stayed out of it cuz idk what the context is maybe he's being unreasonable cuz the kid's got his shit together and just plays games as a hobby or maybe the son is addicted and spends all his money on gacha, i don't know but damn if it wasn't a mirror to a certain part of my life and arguments I've had with my mom a zillion times that the only way I was able to stop was by moving out.

Anyway worst vibes of any ride I've ever given. I'm inclined to side with the son on this one too cuz the dad was wealthy and bragged to me about it ("wait 'till you see my house!" bruv you live in one of a hundred identical middle class HOA communities in this city) but didn't tip so fuck that guy.

Watched a pirated version of Lilo and Stich live action and immediately want that hour and a half back. That it and the Minecraft movie are two of the highest grossing non-Chinese films this year is depressing.

I already said it, but people who put [sic] after stuff without errors should be executed.

Okay but quoting a Brit and putting [sic] after every British spelling is funny

Sister was telling me she first started drinking coffee because of her first job out of college where she had to wake up super early. She didn't drink it in the morning to wake up for work, she drank it once she got off work so she could be alert for her free time. gold-communist

Not sure what to do with myself, I just got fired from my job and have been rotting for the last couple of weeks. Don't worry about me, I had some money saved so it's not like I'm broke. If it wasn't for my dog I don't know what I would do. He's the only reason I leave the house now.

Fuckin' classic ADHD moment:

Had to register for classes this morning at 8am. So I set like 5 alarms last night to make sure I was up before....But I wasn't paying attention so they all were for 8am or later. Luckily the classes I needed are required and the only classes available so it wasn't really a race BUT I CANNOT LIVE LIKE THIS WHILE GOING TO SCHOOL JESUS CHRIST.

Aside from all of that, I signed up for my first term of Graduate level classes, I cannot believe that I'm actually doing the thing I'm so anxious it's been 11 years since I graduated with my Bachelors I don't know if I can school anymore....Nevertheless I will persist

Captured another cat before it got shot by my dad. One left to go. This one let me pet it a bit before it ran off into the woods.

Jonathan Joss, 'King of the Hill' voice actor, killed in San Antonio shooting - NBC NEWS

The 59-year-old actor, best known as the voice of John Redcorn in the hit animated series, died Sunday, police said. Jonathan Joss, the voice actor best known as John Redcorn from "King of the Hill," was killed in a San Antonio shooting on Sunday, police said.

A suspect, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, was taken into custody and booked on a murder charge, the San Antonio Police Department said.

Officers were dispatched to Dorsey Drive around 7 p.m. Sunday for a shooting and arrived to find the actor, whose legal name is Jonathan Joss Gonzales, near the roadway after he was shot, police said. Authorities attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived and pronounced Joss, 59, dead.

Joss was the voice of John Redcorn in the Fox animated series from seasons 2 through 13. John Redcorn was a β€œNew Age healer” and masseur, who was always addressed by his full name or "Mr. Redcorn."

A new season of "King of the Hill" revival is set to debut on Hulu in August. In a credit sequence shared Friday, John Redcorn is seen driving by in his classic tan Jeep.

Joss also played Ken Hotate in "Parks and Recreation" and had roles in "Tulsa King" and the 2016 remake of "The Magnificent Seven." His most recent acting credit was in 2023 for voicing a character in the "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty" video game.

Joss' family home in San Antonio was destroyed in a fire in January. An online fundraiser stated three of his dogs had been killed in the fire and raised more than $10,000. Joss told local reporters then that he did not have a job. Representatives and family of Joss could not immediately be reached for comment

Pride is weird when you don't know anyone, I feel like a fed walking around being gay by myself

spitballing on Pride/lonelinessAn alternative thought to this is that most people probably aren't like "why are they alone WHY ARE THEY ALONE WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM"

However I then discover that I get jealous almost instantly when I see two people walking around. It always blows my mind too, I'm like, "people go to things with each other, how do they do that? would someone ever go to things with me?

literally it can be two people with no obvious relationship and I'm over here like "Wow, the human condition. When's it my turn, huh?" this does not strike me as a situation I can create for myself.

This is a year-round feeling, but I feel it strongly right now. I don't really go on the trans comm here anymore, so idk how common these feelings are there. I can't keep contorting myself to fit in. I can't keep explaining myself. I can't keep crashing out in the megathread hoping that someone will want to "be my friend" (which neurotypicals do not want to hear btw)

Who am I kidding nobody remembers my old account much less what a shit I was lmao

Pacing around the venue/not knowing who to talk to/leaving after 15 minutes gang rise up

Yes we're here, yes we're real, and yes we are sorry for both of those facts

Mario Kart world apparently started development on the switch 1, which means at some point the developers made the switch to switch 2 switch.

i went into a dive on the crash bandicoot wiki to up my bandicoot knowledge and I read about how Crash had a waifu in the first game, Tawna Bandicoot, who was a sexed up Jessica Rabbit looking character, and I read that she was removed from future games because of Sony having issues with her appearance and characterization

so I was like oh huh okay cool I guess Sony took issue with her being a vapid big booba prop for Crash and-

NOPE the problem was that she "looked too old" for Japanese playtesters with one quoted as saying "who's this middle aged woman"
