Thomas Sankara, political leader of Burkina Faso in the 1980s, was born on December 21, 1949 in Yako, a northern town in the Upper Volta (today Burkina Faso) of French West Africa. He was the son of a Mossi mother and a Peul father, and personified the diversity of the Burkinabè people of the area. In his adolescence, Sankara witnessed the country’s independence from France in 1960 and the repressive and volatile nature of the regimes that ruled throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

From 1970 to 1973, Sankara attended the military academy of Antsirabe in Madagascar where he trained to be an army officer. In 1974, as a young lieutenant in the Upper Volta army, he fought in a border war with Mali and returned home a hero. Sankara then studied in France and later in Morocco, where he met Blaise Compaoré and other civilian students from Upper Volta who later organized leftist organizations in the country. While commanding the Commando Training Center in the city of Pô in 1976, Thomas Sankara grew in popularity by urging his soldiers to help civilians with their work tasks. He additionally played guitar at community gatherings with a local band, Pô Missiles.

Throughout the 1970s, Sankara increasingly adopted leftist politics. He organized the Communist Officers Group in the army and attended meetings of various leftist parties, unions, and student groups, usually in civilian clothes.

In 1981, Sankara briefly served as the Secretary of State for Information under the newly formed Military Committee for Reform and Military Progress (CMRPN). This was a group of officers who had recently seized power. In April 1982, he resigned his post and denounced the CMRPM. When another military coup placed the Council for the People’s Safety in power, Sankara was subsequently appointed prime minister in 1983 but was quickly dismissed and placed under house arrest, causing a popular uprising.

On August 4, 1983, Blaise Compaoré orchestrated the “August Revolution,” or a coup d’état against the Council for the People’s Safety. The new regime which called itself the National Council for the Revolution (CNR) made 34-year-old Thomas Sankara president. As president, Sankara sought to end corruption, promote reforestation, avert famine, support women’s rights, develop rural areas, and prioritize education and healthcare. He renamed the country ‘Burkina Faso,’ meaning, “the republic of honorable people.”

On October 15, 1987, Thomas Sankara was killed with twelve other officials in a coup d’état instigated by Blaise Compaoré, his former political ally. He was 37 at the time of his death.

As my marriage gets closer, I'm finding my emotions becoming increasingly lovestruck. It's a surreal feeling to know you aren't entirely alone and have found someone who willingly wants to share their life with you. We've been through a lot with the two of us being involved in local politics back in Guatemala. There have been many threats and intimidations made against us but we persevered.

She's already attractive through her headstrong personality and looks that make every head in the room turn, but the compassion she shows towards others is what made my feelings for her strongest.

She dedicated a lot of time helping out the local lgbt community and sheltering kids and teens who had been abused and/or abandoned by their families. One time right-wingers threatened to burn down the homeless shelter after hearing some gay teens were staying there. She took one of my rifles and spent the night with me guarding the shelter in case they came. That was the moment I knew I loved her. Very few people are willing to put their lives on the line to defend the marginalized. That's the very definition of a comrade in my book.

I consider myself lucky to have her in my life and to eventually be married to her. We're a couple of stubborn comrades taking on the capitalists one step at a time and I wouldn't want it any other way.

I'm mad. I got a PIP at work because I wasn't talking enough in slack and I didn't close enough tickets in Jira. except my team had barely started using jira in the time period they considered - a convenient cutoff because a couple of days later I started filing my own tickets to assign to other people on my team and started opening and closing smaller tickets myself. over the time period they were looking at, I closed a comparable number of tickets with everyone else on my team. at no point did anyone communicate these metrics to either me or my team - it feels like the metrics were derived posthoc.

my manager's manager's reply is that I'll have no trouble meeting these expectations because I was well clear of them in the month that followed the time period they looked at. but they're punishing me for things I had no way of knowing they wanted specific benchmarks on. what was communicated to me was that they cared about the work I was reporting on a status tracking tool and I reported everything there! my deliverables aren't even in question - everyone agrees I did extremely important work at a very high level of thoroughness and quality.

they're trying to punish me for taking too much sick leave due to migraines but they can't say that because we have unlimited sick leave. god I fucking wish we had a union. I did everything they asked and they just changed the benchmarks to make a case against me. they keep saying I'm super valued and they think I'll get promoted if I keep up what I'm doing and in the same breath they pull this shit.

Enjoy the holiday season and don’t worry about this. They’re going to fire you and there’s nothing you can do about it at this point. Look for a new job starting in January.

Don’t bother quitting - just start the new job and buy yourself something nice with the severance they offer at the end of your PIP.

"Do you condemn the antisemitism of the left?"

"Do you mean how some Jewish leftists, upon joining left-wing groups, are sometimes quizzed on if they support or condemn the crimes of Israel, and the members of the group would not be asking them that if they were not Jewish? Yeah, I agree, that is a pretty shitty and racist thing to do. Oh wait, that isn't what you're talking about?"

Ever since the Panini started i've been thinking about the Bene Gesserit Death/Alternative test. How much suffering would you, could you, endure to avert death? For many people the breaking point was spending a few weeks at home, or wearing a fiber mask.

I've talked about this with other people with severe disabilities, be they mental illness or physical handicap, and there's sort of a wide amazement about how little it took to break all the "normal" people. "If you had what i have you'd be dead" has been thrown around flippantly for a long time, but through the lense of the pandemic it seems frightfully real.

I'm wearing a whole ass p100 respirator bc i'm feeling better and alive after years of horrifying depression and i don't want to suffer anymore or die. And i'm surrounded by people, coughing people, old people, young people, sick people, disabled people, many or most of whom have had covid at least once, wondering what they think is happening right now, and why they think that. People have talked about being sick after flying my whole life. You go on a trip, you pick up a rhinvirus or something while you're sitting in the plague-recirculation-anti-gravity-tube, and you're miserable for a week when you get back. Nothing to do with the "rona. Just boring old cold or whatever. And no one ever wore masks then. They could have, but no one did. It's so strange. Just a little preparation, a short period of, for most people, mild discomfort, and you could avert a week of suffering.

What to make of this? What to think of it? I don't know. Much of what I believed about humans have burned in the crucible of pandemic but i have not yet ascertained what the purififting flame will reveal. What metal will be found among the dross of my false beliefs?

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 21 points 11 months ago (6 children)

I think a lot of Am*ricans just don't understand Germ theory of Disease. There are only a bare handful of people wearing masks on this flight and some of them are wearing surgical masks that are just barely better than nothing. And some of those aren't actually snug around the nose, or are being worn under the nose.

What is happening in their calcium brain tomb? What do they think the disease is, and what do they think they're accomplishing by wearing a mask that doesn't seal or cover their booger chute? I don't want to know. I don't want to know. I fear what i would find.

I finally finished my newest belt just in time for Yule! Took me all night but I finally got something I started like a month ago done so I feel good. Helps that it looks amazing, but tablet woven shit always looks good.

Pictures

Here's the front

And the reverse side

The full length of the front side. I only did the X pattern for about half, I got tired of doing that so I settled on just doing it halfway then doing the rest fully in the criss-cross thing.

And heres the reverse side. I knew this pattern would be fully reversible (sometimes they arent) but I had no idea it would look as amazing as it does. honestly I kinda like this side more, its more festive. A small gift from the Aesir this holiday season I suppose.

I've had this same conversation with a lib I know three times now.

It starts with them saying that they don't understand why leftists* and also Muslims are threatening to withhold their vote to Biden over the Palestinian genocide. Israel is their own country, they say, and Biden isn't president there. Biden is doing everything he can. He's giving humanitarian aid to the Palestinians!

The only thing Joe Biden has said he's done to stop the genocide is asking his good friend Bibi to please stop. And as far as the aid goes, I'm curious how much of that Israel is actually allowing to reach the Palestinians.

They reaffirm that Biden is doing everything he can.

Being ludicrously generous and ignoring for the moment that Israel is a client state of the US that if abandoned by the US would likely quickly cease to exist - but let's pretend for the moment that Israel truly is an independent state - Biden could then still wield the enormous powers vested in him as the leader of the most powerful nation in the history of the world to force Israel to stop if asking sternly isn't getting it done. He could stop selling them weapons. Stop sending them aid. Stop supporting them at the UN. He could level trade embargoes or deny visas. He could do as has been done to Russia and Iran, with a regime of sanctions. He could declare a police action, if he wanted to.

They switch tack. Biden won't do those things because Israel is our ally.

You can't have it both ways. Biden is either doing everything in his power to stop a genocide, or he is an active participant in that genocide.

They say well, so what, do these people want Trump to win? He won't do anyone any good. Plus, if Trump wins, democracy is over.

At this point the argument usually peters out, because what good is Biden doing anyone? He claims he is forced to build the border wall because of norms and procedures. Forced to take a hardline stance on immigration to appease Republicans and pass the budget or whatever. Forced to watch and sell weapons to Israel as they do a genocide. Biden can't even fire the guy who is actively trying to privatize the Post Office, one of the only good American institutions. And also, what democracy?

Sometimes they'll rejoinder with "Well the job reports have been good" or "the Dow is up" or "Biden hasn't actively called for the slaughter of striking workers" as some sort of proof that Biden's actually a great President, as if the Dow wasn't bullshit and the job numbers are also largely bullshit and Biden saying a few pro-union things has just been a way to score some points while also working against unions behind the scenes, without getting into a long digression about the removedd state of unions/the corporate-captured business unions that Biden is talking about when he says he supports unions.

*To this particular person leftist seems to mean anyone in the country to the left of Joe Manchin, so I'm never sure who exactly they're talking about when they reference leftists
