I feel like I've actually encountered some Libs IRL and in other online spaces who at least sounded more intelligent. Every one that wanders in here just insists that their right, cites Wikipedia, and tries to troll people like a 14 year old who stole their moms laptop.

You think we'd occasionally get a somewhat more articulate one there but I've yet yo see it.

I've seen an hexbear user take the maximalist "stalin and soviet union did nothing wrong" stance and get lectured by an actual soviet historian but that was on another server. Smart people don't go looking for fights online.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You don't have to be a liberal to suggest to a comrade that "Stalin did some things wrong"

inb4 "stopped at Berlin" etcc

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That wasn't the criticism. It was closer to a left-comm criticizing the Bolshevik's for betraying the revolution, ie Kronstadt etc.

I feel called out.

I know it's a meme in its own right now, but LiberalSocialist's "power dynamics" thing at least had some legs when it came to the material conditions that are most likely in place between significantly different aged people in a relationship, even if they're both adults.

[–] Diuretic_Materialism@hexbear.net 38 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They could have articulated that better than just spamming "power dynamics" at people constantly.

Also the more I looked into it the more I was convinced they were a Destiny fan doing a bit.

Also the more I looked into it the more I was convinced they were a Destiny fan doing a bit.

Why would a "Destiny" (that alias is too pretentious for me to not hang quotes on it) fan be anything but enthusiastic for abusing power dynamics? libertarian-alert

[–] Diuretic_Materialism@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Well specifically that whole power dynamics thing came up right when the Destiny sub was having a field day about Hasan having a sus age gap relationship with someone years ago. When someone pointed out the odd correlation in timing there they got really pissed about it.

Someone made a detailed post about it, but all their drama posts seemed to line up with things the Destiny sub were talking a lot about.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I didn't know those details and that explains a lot.

Sounds like it was was a slapfight between "influencers" that went the way it usually goes.

[–] Gay_Tomato@hexbear.net 12 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I think Hasan was a dating a Jackson? So the discourse went "Is the age gap problamatic?" >>>> "Is the age gap problamatic even if the younger person is more famous then you are even now, mr-twitch-politics-guy." I don't even remember if any of this was beyond rumor. bleh You can see how this became a firestorm.

same-as-it-ever-was

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

dating a Jackson

Now THIS is Titoism

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I'm still surprised power dynamics is what stuck the most when "do you disagree?" was right there

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

"Do you disagree?" should have been the dunkable repeated quote. "Power dynamics" was a legitimate argument to me.

[–] NoYouLogOff@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

I also found "Power dynamics" as a response to like every comment after a certain point to be legitimately funny. If I remember a years old thread correctly LS did respond with some arguments early on but defaulted to it as the comment count got real high.

I'm sure it's happened, I just can't remember any off hand.

[–] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 35 points 3 months ago (2 children)

The liberals that come here are specifically redditors, so they're all idiots

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 27 points 3 months ago (4 children)

Remember the tide of internet funny money peddlers that claimed that database ledger positions associated with ugly monkey cartoons would revolutionize the world and somehow stick it to the big banks and the current ruling class (that more than anyone else bought into the fucking things)? Good times. all-my-apes-gone

AN ARRESTING PORTRAIT OF CHUCK D'S PROPHETS OF RAGE COLLABORATOR, TOM MORELLO, TAKEN FROM THE SERIES "MOST OF MY HEROES DON'T APPEAR ON NO STAMPS"

Chuck D is one of the architects of Hip Hop; politicizing music to speak truth to power. His visual art is personal, it can be found in The Smithsonian and galleries worldwide. His most famous artwork is Public Enemy’s site logo. In 2016 he co-founded Prophets Of Rage alongside members of Rage Against The Machine and Cypress Hill. "Fight The Power" was voted the #2 most important song of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Chuck D was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, in 2013.

Provenance: Courtesy the artist

Exhibition History: A physical print of this lot was exhibited from February 1-March 4 2022 as part of Chuck D’s solo exhibition Near Def Experience: Most Of My Heroes Don’t Appear On No Stamps at Adelphi University

I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I own a piece of Morello merch -- some years back, he did a signature guitar wah-wah pedal with Dunlop. Funny thing is, it's just a regular Dunlop Crybaby wah, but with Zapatista graphics. I didn't already have a Crybaby, and the used market on those things dried up pretty badly during COVID lockdown, so I said fuck it, $5 above regular new price and I get EZLN livery on my wah? Count me the fuck in.

Then he went and did this NFT shit. God damn it, Tom.

Tangential, but this website was unusable for a second during the whole GME spectacle.

Oh, another vaguely ape-related bazinga cringe phenomenon, that one. yea

You said the site was unusable for a while?

One of the early Bitcoin arguments was that it would help marginalized people in the global south who were cut off from traditional banking.

Fast forward to fairly recently, when some people in Palestine are using crypto to receive aid, Binance cut off access when Israel asked. No court orders necessary. Turns out crypto is easier to freeze than money in traditional banking.

Remember when people here said AI art was proletarianizing art by taking it from the """bourgeois""" artist class and putting it in the hands of the working class?

Hey! I was a liberal and a redditor who came here and was rehabilitated. Granted I didn't come here to fight

[–] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I was a liberal when I went to the subreddit, also not to pick a fight, so don't think I was trying to call out people in your position.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 months ago

I didn't genuinely think you were calling people like me out lol :P

The only example I can remember is on another instance, around a year ago maybe. It was a surprisingly civil conversation between a liberal and some hexbears about the Korean War. The liberal actually knew dates and names of specific documents, knew the names of people on either side, knew stuff about 1950s diplomacy. So i was impressed. There was also a surprising lack of portraying North Korea as a cartoonish dictatorship where haircuts are illegal.

The liberal still used a liberal framework though and was completely wrong. Any bare level scrutiny over the claims would reveal them as imperialist and racist, but it's possibly the only time I saw a liberal around here have at least the bare minimum of a presentable argument.

Some libs can be better than a class reductionist commie. But with some of the posts on this site, you generally don't get the good faith libs. I hear plenty of bad takes here (sometimes I'm the one making them) and it only takes a random lib to wander in and be right once or twice.

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Libs IRL

i can believe that, some PMC are very good at their jobs

in other online spaces

nah

[–] Diuretic_Materialism@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago (1 children)

There's a few r/neoliberal power posters who put some effort in and have seemingly done some reading.

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 26 points 3 months ago

non-zero chance they get paid for that lol

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 24 points 3 months ago

yes, but they wouldn't be labelled a lib so this is a logical impossibility.

also, confirmation bias is at play here.

[–] abc@hexbear.net 22 points 3 months ago (1 children)

i think if we'd managed to stay federated with like 90% of the annoying instances we probably would've gotten one or two over the years. unfortunately our posting power was too strong to sail undetected

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The smartest lib I've ever encountered basically copy-pasted the technical definition of production functions and tried to use it as a bludgeon in defense of marginalism, that's it, I've literally never encountered any lib here or on the old sub who ever approached that level of misguided articulation

It's genuinely hilarious how badly miseducated libs on lemmy are, I've yet to see a single one give a convincing definition of the main terms we use, let alone back up their supposedly grounded opposition to our ideologies, they can't even define their own ideology

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago
[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 18 points 3 months ago

I feel like we always get ones that are impossibly embarrassingly smug, like to the point where if they said the sky was blue I'd avoid mentioning my opinions on the sky's colour to avoid association

[–] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

I have yet to see anything more sophisticated than "the other guy is worse, though"

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago

The girl reading this
