I haven't seen this kind of scratched liberalism since the outrage against account pronoun preferences years back.

Maybe "struggle session" is the wrong term because there's a clear and obvious side for comrades and another for scratched liberals.

Maybe Hexbear needs occasional flypaper sessions for the community's health.

Knowing from experience, we'd get the same kind of bullshit if we made posts revolving around "anti-white racism" as well.

[-] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 59 points 4 days ago

Being cautious of white people is absolutely the right attitude. I have white skin, and too many times have I been talking to some white guy who I thought was fairly reasonable until they hit me with some frothingfash shit and assume I'll agree because I'm a straight-passing white guy.

I 100% don't blame anyone who's sus of me because of my skin

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 30 points 4 days ago

You hit the core of what lmayo people often either can't or won't understand; it's about systems, not individuals.

and now that you bring it up i wonder how much liberal capitalitalist hyper individuality and meritocracy contributes to protecting whote supremacy.

[-] someone@hexbear.net 22 points 4 days ago

Western society does seem specifically designed to slap down all thoughts of analyzing social systems.

[-] Scarry@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

To quote /u/BeamBrain

White supremacy is the black hole at the center of liberal thought: not directly observable, but made apparent by how all of their other ideas orbit around it.

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

If jexbear is remembered at all it will ne for this.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago

liberal capitalitalist hyper individuality

This is a primary support system for white supremacy. From it spawns "I got mine, fuck you" and a number of other social poisons that maintains the white supremacist status quo.

When personal identity is perceived as something bought and worn like Twitter flair emojis, it makes being a disadvantaged person seem like a choice.

[-] orshelack@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

This is the way.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

I pass as white-ish (my ancestry is complicated) and Silicon Valley techbros often mistook me for someone that wanted to hear their "soft eugenics" arguments and the like. flashbang

[-] mamotromico@lemmy.ml 20 points 4 days ago

100% my same experience

[-] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

If you're born into the category of straight-looking white dude then your entire life in 'polite' society is one long game of Secret Hitler

[-] D61@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

Charlie Chaplain looking around all nervous

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago

and assume I'll agree because I'm a straight-passing white guy.

It’s crazy just how true this is. And this is especially so when you’re a very generic NPC-looking white guy to boot. Nearly all chuds just assume if you look like them you think like them. It’s like, hey, you’re a white guy so you get tons of privilege, why would you ever want that to end?

[-] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago

yea my appearance is very much "basic white guy" jeans, T-shirt, and flannel most of the time. I've been talking to guys that I've worked with for months, long enough for me to start thinking "ok, sure maybe they're your average"nonpolitical" guys who don't bother with politics because they think it doesn't really affect them, maybe I can push some union ideas, stuff like that", then they heard something on the radio and start ranting about "alphabet people" and "groomers" all while my bi ass is standing there :im-in-danger: and I start thinking about a career change

Critical support for flypaper posting about that, then. Scratched liberals catching bans improves Hexbear.

[-] someone@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago

I'm trying to remember the name of a multiplayer game that supposedly did their own flypaper test a few years back. Allegedly they had a right-wing dogwhistle as one of their preset report-abusive-user reasons. But instead of banning players that reason was used against, it was used to build up a database of players who frequently abused the report-user function and used that specific reason frequently - and they got the ban en masse. This is only half-remembered from some /r/technology post I read a few years back so it may not have happened at all. But if it really did, I'd love to know the name of the game.

[-] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

League of legends (at least I think it was them) had a "report for being unskilled at the game" option that had no effect except for making the system start to ignore reports from whoever used it

I have no idea what game you're thinking of, but if you remember I'd love to know too because it's even funnier than this

[-] frauddogg@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

100% we would. (And damn I forgot how hard we were going off in that thread, but Erika most of all.)

[-] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 22 points 4 days ago

We had one like that super early on around settlers, nearish to the pronoun struggle if memory serves

[-] Angel@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

I wasn't early enough to witness this so-called "pronoun struggle," but if any receipts exist, I'd love to see. I haven't committed enough masochism lately.

[-] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

Tbh in a lot of ways those early sessions were basically a relitigation of the chapo-stupidpol split on reddit. Very similar vibes.

I don’t have any receipts but I remember a lot of JAQing lol I made a post parodying that stuff at the time

I feel like the misogyny really tends to come out most whenever there's a discussion around cishet dating, which is interesting. Cishet dating seems like a mess, but I think it's something that goes unexamined maybe because of how personal it is to those involved.

[-] Angel@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

We can only hope that the straights and cissies will be okay one day.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the "bro code" but a lot of the so-called rules that dudebros put out from it reek of ruinously relationship-sabotaging indoctrination. One of the most glaring examples is the edict that infidelity is something that bros are never supposed to disclose to the girlfriends or spouses of other bros, even after bros brag about it with each other and even encourage such behavior.

Paradoxically, one of the most common cliches of the "bro code" is "never trust a woman." susie-baffled

[-] m532@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

Cishet dating threads are uninteresting to queer people so I think the cishet brainworms can spread mostly unchallenged in there

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago

A hot new takeaway for me from this is that while "I haven't seen a lot of misogyny on this site" may just indicate a professional touch-grass , it may also indicate a fly for the flypaper.

[-] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

In my case, I touch grass but I'm kinda dense so sometimes lib brain rot goes over my head until later. blob-no-thoughts

[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

I haven't seen enough misandry on this site

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

That's quite an insight.

[-] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

The blessedly ignorant and the willfully ignorant.

[-] frauddogg@hexbear.net 35 points 4 days ago

Okay I love the term "flypaper session". Seconding the motion to both keep that nomenclature and to deploy these sessions every so often. I feel these could be teachable moments.

[-] Shinji_Ikari@hexbear.net 32 points 4 days ago

I love when I don't log on for a couple days and I can sit out the latest struggle session

I’m not gonna lie, I’m like three seconds from leaving this site forever over this bullshit. It’s getting old. I don’t care if it was useful as a trap or whatever. It shows that we still have shitheads in the walls; All of it makes me uncomfortable. Just fucking take care of this shit without exposing me to the nonsense.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago

I am guardedly hopeful that so many scratched liberals got banned recently over this.

The site improved quite a bit when the pronoun wars did the same thing.

[-] ashinadash@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

More permabans...

[-] EelBolshevikism@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

quickly, publicly demand people not to make fun of (otherkin/furries/special interests) and ban everyone who complains. I wonder how many flys that'll catch

[-] Taster_Of_Treats@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

You get rid of misogynists by purging them and/or by making them do self crit. No space is naturally racist/sexist/misogynist free.

I think I have missed every single creepy relationship/incel struggle session because I was doing yard work. This is a great motivator to continue doing yard work so I can continue not seeing creepy incel shit on my leftist social media website. Or at least see them after the mods have already banned all the incels.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

I missed most of it too, but then I looked into modlogs. dead-dove-1

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 20 points 4 days ago

The post about the planned action for the misogyny was just an announcement post, some mods did mention making honeypot posts to catch misogynists but the banned users pretty much just decided to go mask off at any mention of misogyny after that post

you know what this current purge reminds me of? the downvote struggle session which led to the transphobe purge, it started normal we some small mod action to get the people downvoting trans posts to stop and then led to a bunch of people going mask off transphobic and admins doing a big purge

overall i think its a good idea, and like the great transphobe purge made the site culture better i think this one will have the same results

[-] LGOrcStreetSamurai@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago

I missed something, what happened? Were Hexbears not being cool commies? Being cool is like the number one rule of being a leftie internet dork. Ya gotta be cool.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

A bunch of berdly-actually popped up and a number of male liberals expressed how scratched they were about feeemales in cishet relationships they were until they were consequently modded into the gulag.

there was a post about misandry and it smelled of bullshit and i didnt read further. apparently it was a hoot.

i think that's what happened.

[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

Please read the thread, especially AcidSmileys top comment. This isn't a 'haha hexbear turns anything into a struggle sesh' struggle but a struggle session in the legitimate sense of okay, a significant portion of the user base should reflect and self crit. Afaict the mods didn't intend for it to be first and foremost a flashpoint for people to tell on themselves but that's how it's ended up

[-] huf@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

oh yeah, i dont mean that it wasnt serious. i just mean that the whole post smelled, so i didnt dive into it. i dont even remember the sequence of events. was the post about misandry the one that was like "reverse racism", or was that the reaction to a post i didnt even see?
