Mao, 1956:

Now U.S. imperialism is quite powerful, but in reality it isn't. It is very weak politically because it is divorced from the masses of the people and is disliked by everybody and by the American people too. In appearance it is very powerful but in reality it is nothing to be afraid of, it is a paper tiger. Outwardly a tiger, it is made of paper, unable to withstand the wind and the rain. I believe the United States is nothing but a paper tiger.

When we say U.S. imperialism is a paper tiger, we are speaking in terms of strategy. Regarding it as a whole, we must despise it. But regarding each part, we must take it seriously. It has claws and fangs. We have to destroy it piecemeal. For instance, if it has ten fangs, knock off one the first time, and there will be nine left, knock off another, and there will be eight left. When all the fangs are gone, it will still have claws. If we deal with it step by step and in earnest, we will certainly succeed in the end.

Strategically, we must utterly despise U.S. imperialism. Tactically, we must take it seriously. In struggling against it, we must take each battle, each encounter, seriously. At present, the United States is powerful, but when looked at in a broader perspective, as a whole and from a long-term viewpoint, it has no popular support, its policies are disliked by the people, because it oppresses and exploits them. For this reason, the tiger is doomed. Therefore, it is nothing to be afraid of and can be despised. But today the United States still has strength, turning out more than 100 million tons of steel a year and hitting out everywhere. That is why we must continue to wage struggles against it, fight it with all our might and wrest one position after another from it. And that takes time.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Zelenskyy released a "plan" to end the war that boils down to

  1. beg to join NATO as soon as possible
  2. sell off natural resources to the West to make them want to defend those resources
[-] vegeta1@hexbear.net 10 points 22 minutes ago

This indicates that the situation is really dire. I hate this war man.

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 1 points 7 minutes ago

So the same plan that started all this shit a decade ago.

Al Jazeera correspondent Dorsa Jabbari says that Residential buildings in Dahiye (southern suburbs of Beirut) are "completely empty" of residents and uncritically repeats 'israeli' claims about Hezbollah storing weapons under people's homes.

Lanat ala al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera English is very weird at times, I remember during operation True Promise 2 during Iran's retaliatory strike, they were interviewing a settler hiding in his bunker. While it was better than what CNN or BBC were showing (though CNN was unintentionally humourous when the reporters realised that the Israeli air defenses were not intercepting anything, and they had to go run and hide in their hotel), it was weird coverage.

[-] Al_Sham@hexbear.net 5 points 9 minutes ago

It all makes sense once you realize Al Jazeera is an arm of US military information warfare apparatus.

Dozens of soon-to-be-retired Australian Abrams tanks will be sent to Ukraine under a $245 million military support package.

[...]

More than a year after Kyiv first expressed interest in the aging M1A1 fleet, and months after Australia rejected a request to donate its grounded Taipan helicopters, the Albanese government has confirmed it will now gift 49 of the American-made tanks.

The Taipan helicopters that kept crashing lol

"One of the unique elements of the Australian tanks is that they're in reasonably good working order. The fact the Ukrainians already have some M1A1s in theatre from the allies suggests there's a good logistics chain there as well as some training," he told the ABC.

yeah because they don't get used. As long as the government keeps buying american tanks right? The article mentions they had to get permission to send them to ukraine too. sovereign borders and social cohesion, oh yeah.

And then there's this tidbit:

"We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine in their fight against Russia's illegal invasion," Mr Conroy.

ABC article link

fascinating stuff, let me just quickly google the honourable ministers press releases:

Further humanitarian assistance to Occupied Palestinian Territories and the region

Joint media release with:

Senator the Hon Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs

16 January 2024

Australia will provide an additional $21.5 million in humanitarian assistance to the Middle East, including in response to the urgent and ongoing humanitarian needs resulting from the Hamas-Israel conflict.

wow look at those numbers! You wont believe me if I tell you that measly amount went directly to NGOs, wow!

link

here's more recent one

Humanitarian Assistance to Lebanon

Joint media release with:

Senator the Hon Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs 28 September 2024

Australia will provide $2 million in humanitarian assistance to support civilians in Lebanon, impacted by the escalation of conflict.

protip: don't look at the news before bed 🤢

Another one about ukraine from may confirms the aus govt has provided over 1billion aud this year. Maybe I'll still be mad in the morning and I'll make a graph.

There are some issues with this approach:

Firstly, by lofting the trajectory of a longer range missile, so that the re-entry vehicle (RV) has the required amount of energy to perform the proposed mid-course flight path, it allows for early warning over the horizon radars to track and detect the missile earlier. That's not ideal, even if it dives below the detection or engagement envelope later.

Secondly, while it's mentioned in the article, the stresses placed on the RV on re entry with such a manoeuvre are massive. Diving in at high speed, then performing a pull up manoeuvre at relatively low altitude, and then leveling out before diving towards the target, puts huge stresses on the RV that it might not be designed for.

These manoeuvres also burn a lot of energy up due to the aerodynamic drag induced when performing such turns, which results in a loss of speed. The Kheibar Shekan RV, like almost all RV's, does not have its own rocket stage. It's speed in the terminal phase after the mid-course phase is complete, is determined by its altitude before the final dive towards the target, and the amount of ballistic energy it has left. These manoeuvres burn up a lot of energy, and performing the final dive from a relatively low altitude, means that speed on final impact is reduced. A slower moving RV is easier to intercept and track.

These are all issues that are addressed by the new Fattah-1 hypersonic ballistic missile. The RV on this missile has it's own rocket stage (the only ballistic missile in the world with a Maneuverable Re-entry Vehicle (MaRV) known to have such), which gives it it energy and propulsion independent of its initial ballistic launch, even after jettisoning the first rocket stage. This blurs the lines between an MaRV and hypersonic weapon. Iran used a number of these missiles in the October 1 retaliation attack, so they are operational, and probably played a big role in the success of the attack.

[-] fever@hexbear.net 2 points 16 minutes ago

I think the main goal of this is to test their defense system against Iranian missiles rather than protecting Israel.

[-] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 30 points 2 hours ago

America should just follow indonesia mask off approach and just have kamala be the vice president of trump or vice versa.

[-] mkultrawide@hexbear.net 14 points 1 hour ago

That would be returning to tradition for America.

[-] Commiejones@hexbear.net 14 points 1 hour ago

I can see a unity government if a war with the axis of resistance+BRICS kicks off in the next few weeks. No way trump would play 2nd to Kamala though.

US Politicians Are Pressuring Ukraine to Lower Draft Age to 18

A Ukrainian official said Tuesday that American politicians are pressuring Ukraine to lower the minimum age of conscription from 25 to 18 to make more young men available for combat.

“If this information has surfaced, I can confirm it: American politicians from both parties are putting pressure on President Zelensky to explain why there is no mobilization of those aged 18 to 25 in Ukraine. The argument of our partners is that when the US fought in Vietnam, people were drafted from the age of 19,” Serhiy Leshchenko, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, wrote on Telegram.

[-] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 9 points 41 minutes ago

If they do this it's total demographic decline, there aren't even a lot of 25 year olds left and really you oughta wait for people to have children before sending them off to die

[-] Tomorrow_Farewell@hexbear.net 10 points 55 minutes ago
[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 15 points 1 hour ago

when the US fought in Vietnam, people were drafted from the age of 19

And as we all know, that decision was widely respected and the US went on to win the war.

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 1 points 4 minutes ago

If you tolerate this your children will be next - manic street preachers.

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 12 points 1 hour ago

Ukraine will need an awful lot of migration after this...

[-] aaaaaaadjsf@hexbear.net 7 points 34 minutes ago* (last edited 26 minutes ago)

That's sure to go well, replacing the entirety of the male adult generation Z population in Ukraine with immigrants after they all die in the war. In Ukraine, a country known to have such an accepting culture to foreigners that they have Nazi Azov brigades, and black volunteer fighters are warned about being called racial slurs, including the n-word, before volunteering. Even when evacuating the country at the start of the war, black people were put on seperate trains.

Even if Ukraine was a fully accepting non racist country, replacing an entire gender of a generation with people from another culture would challenging. In Ukraine, it's a disastrous idea.

[-] aaaaaaadjsf@hexbear.net 16 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Are there even any Ukrainians between sthe ages of 18-25 to conscript? This is not a joke by the way, look at their demographic age makeup below:

There's a reason this age group has been exempt from military conscription.

[-] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 8 points 36 minutes ago
[-] aaaaaaadjsf@hexbear.net 7 points 30 minutes ago* (last edited 28 minutes ago)

There's a reason the war has been seen as a late millenial to gen X war in Ukraine and you see so many older men in war videos, there just aren't many younger Ukrainians in existence. They have been exempted from conscription to try save any potential future of Ukraine. The country has been in a grim situation for decades, GDP and GDP per capita of Ukraine have been below the levels of quite a few "third world" countries since before the war. It's just not seen that way in the Western world because Ukrainians are seen as white and European, for now.

[-] Frank@hexbear.net 1 points 2 minutes ago

Siri what happened 30ish years ago at the apparent start of this demographic collapse?

Ukrainians are already wanting an end to the war, increasing conscription couldnt possibly help anything

[-] RomCom1989@hexbear.net 23 points 2 hours ago

Wow!

Nice to know that behind all the "Western Civilization" brotherhood shit, westerners will always view us pathetic suck up Eastern Europeans as human cattle

I can't wait for my country to get dragged into this shit so my home can get bombed, but it's all ok, because we're taking it all like good little meat shields so that the superior whites can live in their gardens while we continue to belittle our history and believe that we could be part of that if only not for those damn Ruskies

[-] Commiejones@hexbear.net 21 points 4 hours ago

ukrainians who have fled to america and europe are going to to realize that their home was destroyed for american imperialist ego. I can only hope they do something more useful than adventurism against the great satan but shrug-outta-hecks

[-] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 30 points 5 hours ago

US Politicians are unhappy that Zelensky isn't going all the way with "to the last Ukrainian".

But the answer is obvious -- if he lowered the conscription age to 18 it would destroy the country's last hope for rebuilding after the war, and it could even lead to revolts that would threaten his position.

[-] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 26 points 5 hours ago
