New research reveals that the DNA switches controlling human finger development originated from genes that regulated fish cloacas 380 million years ago[^1].

"Rather than building a new regulatory system for the digits, nature has repurposed an existing mechanism, initially active in the cloaca," explains developmental geneticist Denis Duboule from the University of Geneva[^1].

The research team discovered this by comparing fish and mouse genomes, focusing on Hoxd genes. When they tagged DNA switches with fluorescent markers, these lit up in mouse digits but in fish cloacas. Deleting these genetic elements using CRISPR-Cas9 disrupted finger development in mice and cloaca formation in fish[^1].

"The common feature between the cloaca and the digits is that they represent terminal parts," notes geneticist Aurélie Hintermann. "Sometimes they are the end of tubes in the digestive system, sometimes the end of feet and hands"[^1].

Silent Hill f does have flaws, but the pros heavily outweigh the cons. The story sucked me in and combat was more fun than I expected. I am being more nit-picky with the issues I’m bringing up, but they ultimately never affected my enjoyment of the game, nor made me think twice about getting back into it for round 2. And a lot of the issues I had were erased as soon as New Game+ started, which was like a weight lifted off my shoulders.

On top of that, it actually runs quite well on the Steam Deck. It’s definitely not perfect and needs compromises to run effectively, but the game is playable on the Deck and can look gorgeous. It may cost a little extra performance in 3-4 scenes, but they include graphical improvements I’d consider necessary to enjoy.

In the end, Silent Hill f is a thrilling game, and if this keeps up, the future of AAA releases from Konami is going to look very bright.

Film shot at box speed, stand developed with Rodinal. This is the location of the old Crichton-Vulkan shipyard in Turku, which used to be a major shipbuilder in Finland. Some of the most significant ships to get built here were e.g. the submarines used by the Finnish navy in WWII, first of which was originally built as a prototype for the Reichsmarine. It's still possible to go see one of them, CV-707 or Vesikko, in Suomenlinna where it's on display.

The shipyard, after multiple restructurings, eventually located to Perno, Turku, and was eventually purchased by Meyer. Now it's mostly known for building the worlds largest cruise ships, such as the Royal Caribbean Icon-class. The old dry-dock and shipyard were developed into new housing, and on the right you can see some of the most expensive homes in all of Turku.
