Is there any truth to the claims that the app doesn't allow LGBTQ discussion?

[–] Parsani@hexbear.net 38 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (4 children)

There seems to be an entire LGBTQ ecosystem. Look for 🌈 for example. It isn't the same kind of posting as in the west though. More low key I guess, but still open.

Anything that can be construed as sexual content gets removed. But people clearly skirt the line on that. I assume the average 🌈poster in China has a good intuition for what is fine to post. But like, you can say your gay or trans or whatever in English or Mandarin and be fine. At least from what I've seen. People have also been helping correct the translation for non-binary because people keep using a computer science term lol

There are definitely some Chinese chuds on there, but most comment sections are very kind.

I love this

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't mind being called a computer term lmao

Well, a lot CAN be construed as sexual content, as gestures broadly at right-wing propaganda in the United States shows us. But is this referring to a good faith construing of it as sexual content?

[–] Parsani@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I realized I said that very matter of factly, but it is just an assumption based on what I've seen. Im sure it's strangely arbitrary like any moderation, particularly with a Chinese social media company.

Porn is clearly not allowed, but like two girls or two guys holding hands and almost kissing seems fine.

People seem to be posting about being gay and talking about it fine. Posts which get lots of interaction have a higher chance of a "we don't talk about this" comments (from men) but like the post is still there and others are like "ignore it, be yourself and live life fully". Posts with less engagement are usually very sweet in the comments.

Idk, my feed is now theory, nb fashion, and cooking. It's great, but I don't really see anything else but that or the Chinese or American question posts. I do know if someone says something rude you can report them and it's removed.

The only thing is that Americans flooding previously existing spaces like this may bring more unwanted attention and moderation. So no idea if that lasts or not.

'I identify as a ternary qubit'

Ah, I figured as much. The whole thing smelled like bullshit. Libs do love their woke xenophobia.

[–] Parsani@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

I think they overblow it, but I have heard of people getting somewhat innocuous stuff removed for one reason or another.

I'm not an expert though lol, I just joined a few days ago. I don't really post either so I don't know the limits.

I've seen TikTokers talking about how great lesbian xiaohongshu is, so I assume not. But LGBTQ topics may have to be discussed in coded or indirect ways that Americans don't know. I'd assume it's best to lurk.

[–] Parsani@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

That's why I said low key. It's obviously a different vibe than in the US sites. I really hope that this doesn't cause the previous communities on xhs to have problems though.

[–] trinicorn@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I've seen screenshots on hexbear already of lesbian content and discussion of trans ppl on there, but idk what the official line is

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Different culture, different norms. Chinese haven't purged all of their homophobic brainworms for sure. A common take I've seen is "I don't care but don't fuck me ha ha ha" sometimes worse like "not in front of the children". They have work to do. At the same time it's worth noting that their homophobia is not identical to the Christian theocratic flavored stuff that is not just harmful but outright deadly.

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sounds like how the US was like in the 90's to early 2000's. They'll get there I'm sure.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

Yeah I don't want to take it easy on them, especially if they are a socialist comrade of ours, but I don't want to hear from the average American either, although I could see how a young zoomer wouldn't know anything different since the US supreme court said "it's ok 2 be gay (till we decide otherwise)" in 2015

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

No lol there are a lot of lesbians and some gay men and trans ppl. It’s discussed differently and users may have shitty attitudes, but there’s absolutely lgbtq content

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

And I don’t even get their point about banning lgbt content.

They never shut up about how they want the whole lgbt community dead, so how are they any better?
