This is because of Trump's tariffs. There is no longer a de minimus exception, everything has to go checked.

I googled de minimus.

The de minimis exemption, which allows shipments of less than $800 to avoid import duties and taxes, has become a critical tool in e-commerce supply chains to limit cross-border shipping costs.

De minimus was originally intended so you don't have to pay tariffs on little $10 goodies you got while travelling. Then they raised it to $800 cause why not?
Dropshipping basically relies on this, US is about to go from probably the highest de minimus in the world to nothing.

10$ adjusted to inflation? Or 10$ originally 100 years ago?

More like 50 years ago but yeah $10 originally

America (and other places) should probably put an "adjusted for inflation" thing on any dollar amount appearing in a law

The Biden admin actually got the ball rolling on removing the de minimis exception. It just synced up with Trump's tariff threats.
