Frank Dune clearly implies that Butlerian Jihad was the root of all troubles and thing changing entire setting into tragedy. Only Brian by introducing Omnius and shit turned it into very mundane physical survival fight against Skynet nr 1876876, and even in Brian books it was said multiple times that BJ went way too far.
