ok, the phrase "self-medicating at PetCo" is an absolute banger. lmao

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 32 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is an old meme in fishkeeping circles but RFK jr might make it real:

Do NOT, without doctor supervision, put anything blue or green in your body that isn't food. Oftentimes, that color comes from copper which will replace the iron in your blood and will stop your red blood cells from releasing oxygen to the cells. Methylene blue is not one of these materials (and an IV drip of it is actually the treatment if this happens to someone) but I really want to make it clear that those colors are not safe. Do no consume dyes or anything but food grade coloring.

It’s ok, he’s spearheading a movement

[–] NewOldGuard@hexbear.net 40 points 3 days ago

This is true unless you are RFK Jr, in which case go for it

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 30 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If I wasn't supposed to be eating blue paint chips, Why'd you paint them blue? Checkmate

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago

Also, don't call them chips unless you want us to eat them

[–] underisk@hexbear.net 20 points 4 days ago (3 children)

now im wondering if that copper cookware fad is causing people to slightly poison themselves from the copper leaching into their food the way cast iron leaches iron.

[–] crime@hexbear.net 22 points 4 days ago

In copper cookware the copper is coated, the part that touches food isn't copper

[–] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 20 points 4 days ago

Generally those are lined with something to prevent a harmful amount of copper leaching. That being said, if they are not treated correctly, the lining can come off and then they would become dangerous. I use ceramic copper pans and I have felt no ill effects yet, but I am very careful with how I cook with them and clean them.

Chelators are such fun

Getting "causes oxydative stress" mixed up with "prevents oxydative stress" is so good.

And the idea of doing a higher than optimal dose because you are "spearheading a movement" is an incredible bit.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 59 points 4 days ago (2 children)

low key hoping that RFK directly leads to one or more of the current administration developing health problems from the 1860s and dying because they insisted that what they were doing was helping.

You know what else prevents colds and viruses at the airport/planes? An N95.

sigh really hope none of my dumbass family picks this shit up

[–] FactuallyUnscrupulou@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Same, generally terrified my mom is gonna kill herself with this quackery.

[–] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

Same, my mom is already in not great health :pain:

[–] lurker_supreme@hexbear.net 39 points 4 days ago (3 children)

The libs don't want you to know this, but you should be drinking elixirs daily. I'm talking mercury. I'm talking antimony. And you'd better include your daily value of arsenic while you're at it. I'm never felt better and I'm going to live forever.

So it's the anti-vampire thing from blade? Certainly explains why it does that.

Methelyene blue is Western Decadence.

Brilliant Green is proletarian science.

[–] frankfurt_schoolgirl@hexbear.net 30 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Sometimes I wonder how much damage could be done to the far right by intentionally spreading crazy health dads like this. I guess for every ghoul it kills there would be 10 teenagers or maha moms.

I just watched this documentary about the "mother god" cult

Anyway, I think RFK should get into colloidal silver

[–] HelluvaBottomCarter@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I combine blue spirulina, collodial silver, and methyl blue.

Is this the mythical fluid that turned that old guy's body blue because of how much he was taking?

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 34 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I think that was colloidal silver. I have no idea what this shit is about. I did OK in chemistry and used to know a lot of functional group prefixes by heart, but that was a decade ago. but looking at those words, without looking at an MSDS sheet, tells me humans probably shouldn't assume it's safe to ingest.

but maybe it has some immunosuppressant qualities that the worm in his brain finds beneficial.

it really throws me that these guys are always on about the ancient wisdom of their supposedly traditional medicine, but it's always promoting new formulation of panacea somehow at the same time.

it really undermines their attempts to distance themselves from the snake oil comparisons.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 32 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Colloidal silver is actually an old-timey disinfectant, as silver itself actually does have anti-bacterial properties. Drinking colloidal silver is the old-timey version of thinking that drinking bleach will be good for you.

[–] crime@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fun fact: It's also good for transing your cannabis plants, so you can get lesbian seeds that are guaranteed to also be female (i.e. that grow into flowering plants)

The original Nate Silver

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago

that guy's story. just going crazy for the colloidal silver to fix all his problems (acid reflux, arthritis) and willing to overlook it making him look like a Level 55 Smurf Warlock. and apparently not willing to stop or even slow the heavy smoking of tobacco the entire time... even after a triple bypass.

dies of heart attack/pneumonia/stroke.

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago

That was colloidal silver

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Okay I've never bothered to look into any of this, but why is it antioxidants are so important? Don't I want oxygen? Google is just giving mlm, Reddit and ai slop answers

[–] NewOldGuard@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So your body naturally creates certain oxygen containing molecules called free radicals. These are created in response to stress, immune response, and environmental stressors like UV light, radiation, and smoke. Free radicals are highly reactive as they lack a valence electron. Due to this reactivity they can damage molecules that make up your cells, including DNA, and lead to long term health issues. This is called oxidative stress. Antioxidants are molecules which have an extra electron and readily donate it to molecules that are lacking one, in this case the free radicals in your body. Their importance is in this function of reducing oxidative stress.

[–] REgon@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Neat! Thanks for the writeup. Never thought I'd be against radicals running free

[–] Drewfro66@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 days ago

I don't remember why, but certain compounds break down into "free radicals", or single oxygen atoms (as opposed to double-bonded oxygen molecules) that very easily bond to other compounds in your body and break them down.

Antioxidants cut down on the free radicals in your blood (typically by bonding with them first, I believe) to prevent them from destroying important compounds in your body.

Methylene blue may cause serious or fatal serotonergic syndrome when used in combination with serotonergic drugs.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK557593/ Methylene blue is a medication used in the management and treatment of methemoglobinemia, a condition in which hemoglobin decreases its ability to carry oxygen. This activity reviews the indications, action, adverse effects, and contraindications for methylene blue as a valuable agent in the therapy of methemoglobinemia, vasoplegic syndrome, Plasmodium falciparum, and ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy, as well as for diagnostic purposes such as sentinel lymph node mapping during breast procedures and parathyroid gland mapping during parathyroidectomies. This activity will highlight the indications, mechanism of action, adverse event profile, and other key factors pertinent for members of a healthcare team managing patients with methemoglobinemia and related conditions.

Methylene blue has FDA approval for the treatment of methemoglobinemia, a condition when Fe2+ of hemoglobin gets oxidized to Fe3+, reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin, and typically presents with cyanosis of the lips and extremities, characteristic "chocolate-colored urine," and hypoxia.[1] Methemoglobinemia results from exposure to certain drugs such as dapsone, a drug indicated for the treatment of Mycoplasma leprae and Pneumocystis jirovecii prophylaxis, benzocaine (a local anesthetic), high altitude water sources, and nitrites such as nitroglycerin or amyl nitrite used for treating coronary artery disease.[
