On this day in 1822, revolutionary Denmark Vesey planned a slave revolt to take place in South Carolina, intending for thousands of slaves to kill their masters and sail to Haiti; instead, he was betrayed by slaves and executed.

Denmark Vesey (c. 1767 - 1822) was a literate, skilled carpenter and community leader among in Charleston, South Carolina. Likely born into slavery in St. Thomas, Vesey was enslaved by Captain Joseph Vesey in Bermuda.

At the age of 32, he won a lottery and bought his freedom, but was unable to buy the freedom of his wife and children. In 1818 he co-founded an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) congregation in the city, which enjoyed the support of local white clergy. The church attracted 1,848 members, making it the second-largest AME congregation in the nation.

Vesey reportedly began planning the insurrection to take place on Bastille Day, July 14th, 1822, a date notable for its association with the French Revolution, whose victors had abolished slavery in Saint-Domingue.

News of the plan was said to be spread among thousands of black people throughout Charleston and for tens of miles through plantations along the Carolina coast. Two slaves opposed to Vesey's scheme, George Wilson and Joe LaRoche, gave the first specific testimony about a coming uprising to Charleston officials, saying an uprising was planned for July 14th.

In June, Vesey was formally accused of being the leader in "the rising". He was convicted and quickly executed on July 2nd.

In the aftermath of Vesey's and others' convictions, authorities blamed "black religion" for contributing to the uprising, noting Vesey's role in the AME church.

The reverend of the church was driven out of the state. Charleston officials ordered the large congregation to be dispersed and the church building to be razed. No black church officially met in Charleston until after the Civil War.

Went camping over the weekend with a couple people and any time I do things like this I always end up really sad; like I don't fit in, like I'm an alien. I feel like I couldn't get a word in during conversations, or some things I would say would just be ignored but I just could've been too quiet, idk.

I just really really need to accept that I am not capable of fitting in in groups and making new friends is highly unlikely.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You had enough friends to get invited to camping. Don't be too hard on yourself.

There should be a thing like "Six degrees of Kevin bacon" for online content creators but its like "Degrees of working with a nazi" and I bet no ones number would go over 3.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Mine is 2. I recently worked with a woman who was close to retirement. Whenever the topic of military service came up, she'd often mentioned how proud she was of her father's service in the navy in WW2. The German navy. As I don't subscribe to "clean wehrmacht" bullshit, I consider her dad a nazi.

Apparently when he emigrated from Germany to Canada in the late 1940s, he had problems settling in the Maritimes. He "felt unwelcome" to use her words. He was apparently extremely welcome in southern Ontario though.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

The fact that so many Germans didn't even have shame enough to lie is proof that Stalin shouldn't have stopped at Berlin

Every mainstream platform works with nazis so any non-fringe content creator is already at 2 by default.

Reposting cause I made this comment like 5 minutes before the last mega got locked:

The last 35% of Civ games are just kinda boring huh

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think I generally have more fun in the last 35% of a Civ game than a Stellaris game. Also, I only played one Civ 7 game, but it felt a lot more interesting in the endgame than Civ 6.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Does civ 7 do anything specific to make end games more fun? Someone told me they wipe some stuff of the board between eras preventing too much snowballing, is that it?

Generally, I'm for any technology that reduces labour. But holy fuck I hate leaf blowers I genuinely want labourers to only be 20% as efficient when it comes to gathering up leaves and detritus and let the cards fall where they may.

[–] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

The thing is, it's more efficient at doing a job that really shouldn't be done except in rare cases. Like, in practice, the vast major of "leaf" blowing is getting grass clippings off of sidewalks/driveways/roads, but those lawns shouldn't exist in the first place! In a better world, all those stupid-ass lawns would be replaced by native gardens/xeriscaping.

Goddamn, though, I really hate gas-powered leaf blowers especially. It's unfathomable that they're even legal, considering the noise and pollution they spew from their horribly inefficient engines. I've read about municipalities and counties banning them here and there (and they're banned for sale in California along with gas-powered trimmers), but it would be nice to just rid ourselves of them in one fell swoop.

[–] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bruce Banner just needs to scroll twitter/reddit to go full hulk mode.

not a bad parody idea tbh, you could probably totally get away with a Legally Distinct Hulk Like Guy who has to be like "hold up let me browse my feed for a sec" before going into Fight Mode. Maybe you could make it about like, the contrast between needing the strength gained and the clear expense of mental health that comes with it

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I've noticed a correlation between my social media use and my general productivity-dishes, laundry, reading, exercise. But as we all know correlation does not mean causation so no use pondering over that.

Because a bunch of reactionaries have adopted the "Free Palestine" rhetoric, every now and then my twitter TL shows me a tweet that's just antisemitism. Saw something earlier about how Jews get interest-free loans in the US and a reply was like "Don't let them tell you otherwise, the Talmud says it's okay to lie to goyim". The exact same thing they say about Muslims with Taqiyya or whatever. I'm pretty sure more chuds have read the Talmud than Jewish Israelis.

Here in America we are on our way to that goal working backwards. If you ban all public transport than you preclude that peoblem

made up a new type of guy to get mad at: guy who watches baseball and loudly complains the whole time that the sport would be better if they ran the bases clockwise instead of counterclockwise

dunno why that'd be his fixation but it'd be annoying

So it's the "dad catches you smoking and makes you finish a whole pack/carton" but it's beer instead. And he finishes the case off in front of you instead of vice versa, and your punishment is dealing with your increasingly inebriated father as he tells you embarrassing stories

Stuck in limbo between needing money for my bills, waiting for my paycheck to hit, and not being able to work until I have gas money. What the hell takes the bank so long, anyway? It's all electronic transfers, shit should be available immediately.
